The following are two beautiful townhomes built in 1929 which include "Virtual Furnishings and Reimagined Design Themes" in their listings. God I hope nobody follows through with their suggestions.

Get that Craftsman furniture outta here!

Sure just remove the cushions from the window seats, it's not like anyone is going to sit there. And of course having actual dressers in your bedroom is so outdated.

Certainly nobody is going to miss those built-in cabinets and that linen wallcovering. Shave the drawer pulls too while you're at it, nobody needs those.

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/444-E-52nd-St-APT-1A-New-York-NY-10022/2081773481_zpid/

COLOR BAD. Also apparently border inlays on hardwood floors. Also windowsills.

they don't have an after photo of this fabulous room but I imagine the theme of "paint it white and put bland furniture in" would continue

Just thinking about someone going through with these made me so loving angry, literally shaking rn

I've been looking at some houses nearby and almost all of the prospective candidates which originally had fun 1950s decor and details have been given the greige treatment by the PO to "increase the resale value", it's just so... sad :(

I'm gonna eventually post some pictures of my tiny beige box and ask for some interior design advice because currently my only conscious design choices have been a painting of a cat and a modern repro of an Edison Electric Light sign (Posted directly underneath a 12v LED lamp).

But before that, I'd like some input on terminology. I happen to really like mid-century modern furniture, although what I like is actually the really weird stuff that looks like it rolled off the set of the Jetsons, with the thin columns and semi-organic shapes and disc-shaped accents. Is there a specific term for that style? And does anyone still make it?

...I could afford the $175 magazine holder! :v:

Probably should have expected that actual artistic furniture would have an actual artistic price tag attached.

For USA home design (not quite interior design, but significant overlap) check out:

"American Vernacular Buildings and Interiors 1870-1960" by Herbert Gottfried and Jan Jennings
"A Field Guide to American Houses" by Virginia Savage McAlester

Both cover a lot of ground and will give you a good starting place for more in-depth study.

It's not a book, but Kate Wagner of McMansion Hell has written some good articles about architectural history. Unfortunately, it's a tumblr so they're not really organized very well.

The furniture is atomic or Populuxe if you're fancy, the architecture is sometimes called "Googie" which is the best name of any architectural style ever imo

Retro Renovation is the catch-all website for anything related to this style - they've found sources for every bit of furniture and decor you could imagine, including a lot that is still made to today.

Local antique shops can have better deals than the larger websites. Here's a super rad :orb: grill for sale right now in my city for example https://epochfurnishings.com/product/vintage-60s-atomic-spherical-clamshell-grill/

I assume whoever restores the place (there's peeling paint, floors need refinished, etc) will pick appropriate Eastlake-style switchplate covers to match the rest of the hardware.

Like others said this is best represented by Populuxe and Googie style. There are some small boutique makers of replicas or new pieces out west or in California [edit: a word of caution, replica makers like this are basically the PT cruisers of the design world]. There don’t seem to be as many companies making repros as I remember but it’s somewhat possible cherrypick pieces elsewhere. Like I think think the eames “hang it all” coat rack is baller and fits in seamlessly and those are readily available on design within reach.

It also has a lot of crossover with the label “space age” too. For whatever reason that leans more toward expensive designer pieces without decorations like those disc shaped accents or whatnot. Think 2001 A Space Odyssey vs The Jetsons. Some of it is still in production. You can still get an authentic or knockoff Knoll saarinen table with some tulip chairs.

If you wanna buy used, depending on your location you can find entire vintage shops or showrooms that specialize in any one of the above styles.

I know way back in the way back, this thread used have a title with some variation of "Live, Laugh, Love" in it. When my wife's new graphics designer made her these throw pillows, this is the thread I thought of instantly.

They also made completely awesome blankets. She's been having a rough year, so her holiday designs were especially snarky, and my wife just went with it.

The Zillow search term of the day is "conch". "Conch houses" are a vernacular style of architecture in Key West, Florida.

quote:

The conch house, like other Florida vernacular architecture styles, is built of wood, and set on posts or piers, which allows air to circulate under the floor. Conch houses are rectangular, of one or two floors, and usually have a porch across the full width of the front of the house (both floors if the house has two floors). Other characteristics are horizontal weatherboarding or clapboarding, low gabled or hip roofs, and double-hung sash windows. Roofs may be metal or shingled. Conch house designs were often influenced by Classical Revival or Neoclassical architecture. Other than carved brackets and/or rafter ends on porches, conch houses generally lack ornamentation.

Greetings from the north, I haven't seen the sun for two weeks and yeah, all those bright colours really make me wish I was in warmer climes right now. At least I live in a town with lots of old houses that are painted in colours other than grey or beige! I will never understand why Finns are so adamant on amplifying the dreariness of winter by making everything else also as bleak as possible.

All these horrible toilets are due to apartment subdivision of some other house, aren't they? Like someone turns a house into three apartments and obviously you would need to offer an excellent deal on rent for someone who cannot poo poo in their home.
