I was just doing a dumb pun, BUT I did look it up, and found this out. According to the listing it's a 1770 home in Charleston, and

quote:

After suffering extensive damage during the earthquake of August 31, 1886, many Charleston buildings were rebuilt and reinforced with long iron stabilizing tie rods. The rods were inserted into and through the walls and anchored on the outside of the structure with iron bolts and plates.

So maybe they did that and redid the trim at the same time? I don't know, but history is cool and thanks for making me curious.

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/3470-Old-Lynchburg-Rd-North-Garden-VA-22959/79031453_zpid/ former Civil War era general store with an extremely weird 1996 renovation

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1325-Old-Route-30-Cashtown-PA-17310/2076926507_zpid/ "Cashtown Inn" (1797), whose tavernkeeper reported over $2,000 in damages from looting Confederate troops as they marched towards Gettysburg.

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/7865-Nesbit-Ferry-Rd-Sandy-Springs-GA-30350/35947519_zpid/ " This estate spreads over 3 vast acres amongst Atlanta's most upscale subdivision. The estate includes a primary house, a 12-room farmhouse originally constructed in 1854 for a Civil War Colonel with a log cabin addition dated 1840 from Monroe, Georgia. Additional structures include an antique garage dated 1830 from Mount Airy, Georgia, a gorgeous 2-story guest house dated 1840 from Gordon, Georgia, and a unique outhouse dated 1840 from Jonesboro, Georgia." This feels...wrong, somehow, like a rich fucker just bought up a bunch of historic houses in the countryside and moved them to his suburban compound It's also described as a "goldmine for an investor".

Dr Jenkins, of Lands End Plantation on St. Helena Island, was one of the richest men in Beaufort. Jenkins lost the mansion when he evacuated from Union soldiers in 1861. The Elliott House was used as a Union hospital during the war. Union soldiers posted upstairs where they had a clear vantage point of the harbor. The upstairs walls still contain scribbles and drawings from the stationed soldiers. George Holmes, a Union speculator, purchased the home during a tax sale following the war."

The interior design is way less interesting than the soldier graffiti though.

nope

honestly for a really high quality floor lamp (not table lamp), that's a bit on the lower end. I tend to use room and board prices as my measuring stick and it's in line with that

https://www.roomandboard.com/catalog/lighting/floor-lamps

"bonkers" would be something like this (check the three arm version) https://www.dwr.com/lighting-floor/serge-mouille-floor-lamp/2302.html?lang=en_US

with that you are paying that much so you can stunt on people when you invite them over for dinner parties or something

Looking at buying a house where the interior chimney bricks are a combination of brick and rough-edge stone... and have been painted white :negative:

How feasible is it to strip the paint and restore a natural look (which, it must be said, we don't know what color it would be)? I feel very skeptical that stripping would result in nice natural porous looking stone, I have to imagine it would look weirdly smooth due to sanding (especially the rough/natural edge parts), but I'd be glad to be wrong.

Otherwise, if we dig light natural colors, and if both sides of the chimney are big windows showing a wooded hill, what are some good options for painting over the white?

You could get it sand blasted before you move in. It'll take longer to prep and clean up than to strip it back.

You can also get it CO2 blasted, where they use dry ice instead of an abrasive media. If your abrasive media is harder than the stone beneath it then it'll also eat away the stone. Ideally it's just hard enough to chow down the paint and leave the stone in a natural state.

Depending on how porous/open grained the stone and brick are, I would think even with sandblasting or w/e you will probably still have little white bits down in the nooks and crannies. I don't know that doing a good job removing the paint is going to be DIY-able.

What color will the walls be? I wouldn't paint the chimney the same color. Any idea what rugs/furniture might be in there? I'd use those to find a coordinating color for the chimney since you want to change it anyway rather than trying to pick a color for it in isolation.
