Okay I gave 10 dollars to the great and evil satan (hobby lobby) and got some bamboo needles and a thing of yarn which is actually acrylic apparently. So far this is the lowest cost of entry to any hobby I've ever tried. I've splopped some brandy in my tea and am watching youtube to learn to do this and am about to make MY FIRST KNITS which I will livepost, don't you worry. |

turns out the first step is finding the end of the yarn which was....harder than I thought.

I got about 4 stitches in and did something wrong and had to undo back to my cast on stiches. Turns out 'undo' is very easy. maybe I shouldn't have gotten black yarn and maybe I need better light.

I'm so proud of all of you. Hot knitting tip: light colored yarn, a fat weight (aran/heavy worsted or bigger), large needles. Always do this when starting out! It will make you feel accomplished so much faster, AND you can really see your stitch definition. |

Yes I learned this the hard way because I was obsessed with a dark blue lace weight yarn when I was six and my mom's philosophy was "you start it, you finish it." |

ok i finished my first (second?) row and the yarn between the needles got longer and longer and now my last knot has this huge loop in it I have made a disaster I am sure

I am considering picking up two knitting needles and pretending they are ninja swords.

Frog/ribbit (slang for "rip it back") back one stitch--if you drop the cast on stitch, you can make a loop and twist it one time to cast that stitch back on. Then, determine the source of the knot. Where is it in the working yarn? |

Kief Richards posted:Frog/ribbit (slang for "rip it back") back one stitch--if you drop the cast on stitch, you can make a loop and twist it one time to cast that stitch back on. i took it off and put the slipknot back on the other needle and cast on a few more things to take up the slack which seems like cheating, but maybe it will work? idk. I'm gonna run with it and see if it continues to happen i guess. The only knot is the slip knot i tied at the very start

Do you have a JoAnn, Michael's or other big box craft store near you? Get you a coupon or five and go look for Wool Ease Though and Quick and some size 13 needles. You need two skeins. Let's knit a scarf. |

This is exactly how my knitting went. I thought all the old ladies can do it while chatting or watching tv. How hard could it be?

There's definitely some nonsense in there but it almost looks like knitting: This yarn is v. cheap and fuzzy and the threads separate easy and I think I accidentally just grabbed half a yarn a few times and that messed me up.

my stitch is way too tight but it was the same learning crochet at first. this is way better than my last attempt! |
