It's much faster for similar price.

All other things being equal which CPU would you choose at these price points: Ryzen 7 2700X - $290CAD Ryzen 5 3600 - $320CAD Ryzen 5 3600X - $330CAD Ryzen 5 3700X - $399CAD Based on research I've done, in particular watching Gamers Nexus videos, seems like a tossup between the 3600 and 3600X but maybe I'm missing something. That is a very expensive SSD. I guess if you don't mind paying a premium, but as a Samsung drive my guess is that you're paying a premium there. I couldn't tell you what the difference truly is between a 970 Plus vs a Sabrent Rocket or an Intel 660p but those are fine drives that are 20-30% cheaper.

You can mix and match, but my personal reasoning against that is wanting to keep the second M.2 slot open for PCIe 4 storage when it comes down in price a bit and the speed is actually utilised.

2TB is nice especially if you were going to spring for a $430 drive and can instead get a $300 drive or even less https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0829DZH2W?tag=pcp0f-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1 Since we're kind of on a limited slots/form factor thing again (not that you couldn't just add SATA drives...) I'd get the biggest drive you can. Also installing M.2 drives isn't as no thought as SATA since they screw into the board. 2TB wasnt seen as anything insane or crazy on a new spinning drive system, we just all changed our habits. I like having space again on my desktop, I can work on some dumb 200GB project and just delete it when I realize I was high & it's not a fun idea

Ok both times I've gone to turn my PC on in the morning the last two days, it's powered on but not displayed anything, and the GPU light didn't come on even though the fans were spinning. It refuses to turn off with holding down the power button, I have to pull the plug, then when I turn it back on it works fine, and has turned on and off normally through the day. Given my other weird motherboard issues (BIOS flash not working, CMOS jumper not working) is it likely my board is just slightly hosed? If so I'm thinking I'll just order a new one and return this when it arrives. I can't be doing with the stress of wondering if it'll turn on properly every morning.

I'd strip the board down a bit (and definitely test with literally any other GPU if that option is available) but in my LIMITED experience FANS ON + DIAG LIGHT + NO POST + DOESNT RESPOND TO HOLDING POWER DOWN = dead board. Like "doesnt respond to holding power down" is a really bad sign as far as I know, it's an incredibly low level function. I suspect a hairline fracture or physical defect in the CPU socket on mine and replaced it to never ever have another problem again. Coincidentally, I had been having "it shuts down instead of reboots, oh well" issues.

Hey all, I had a couple quick GPU questions. I'm currently running a GTX 1060 6GB GPU with a Ryzen 5 3600 CPU on a 1080p 60fps monitor. It runs Cyberpunk pretty good, most settings on high with a stable 40ish fps. 1) Could I get better performance in Cyberpunk by only changing my GPU? If so, what's the best GPU for me, considering that I'm not willing to change my CPU. A GTX 1660 super? AMD RX 5600 XT? They both seem to be well recommended 1080p GPUs but I don't know if my CPU means I won't be buying "too much" video card with either of those choices. 2) Same question but assuming I bought a better monitor. What GPU might I need then? Is it even feasible with my CPU? I assume I can't just go straight to a new RTX 3080 super and not have the CPU become a bottle neck. But is there a card I could pair with my current CPU and get up to, say, 1440p 120 fps? Thanks in advance for the advice, I built my current PC specifically to play Cyberpunk on my current monitor, and it's doing the job well enough, but I'd like to get a bit better graphics and performance if that's a reasonable expectation with my current CPU.

What's a decent CPU aftermarket cooler to pair with a Ryzen 5x00? I've been looking at a the Noctua NH-D15, and it seems to be a perfect fit (quiet, efficient) but it's pretty pricey in my country. Are there any decent cheaper alternatives or should I just bite the bullet and get the Noctua?

So I snagged a 3090 on a drop and was planning to return it if I got a 3080, but so far no luck. If I decide to just keep the 3090 and build around that, what Ryzen chip would be a good choice? I've seen some sources recommend the Ryzen 7 3700x but wanted to check here for more objective advice.

As the other poster said as you increase resolution GPU becomes the bottleneck rather than CPU and the 3600 is a great processor and will continue to be for years, so pair it with whatever you can afford. If you're happy at 1080p then I'd go with a 3060ti but if you're moving up to 1440p 144hz then stretching to a 3080 would make sense. Incidentally I'm not sure any card gets 120fps on cyberpunk 1440p at the highest settings, it's an extremely hungry game. I don’t imagine cyberpunk runs smoothly on the highest settings on any reasonable machine, like not worth more than a new car. My brand new build looks like it’d run smoothly at 1440 around medium settings at best.

Jack B Nimble posted:Hey all, I had a couple quick GPU questions. The problem with GPU recommendations at this point is that the RTX 30xx series simply destroys everything else on a value basis. A 1660 super would be some sort of increase over your 1060, but apparently its at about $300 because of supply crunch, and for $400, you can (hypothetically) buy the 3060 Ti, which will absolutely obliterate it, while giving you more headroom and unf for tomorrow's games and features. I think the basic breakdown is - the 3060 Ti will be plenty for 1080 gaming with maxed out everything, and it'll get the job done at 1440 too. The 3070 is a more solid 1440 card, and the 3080 will get you there for 4K gaming. Anyway, this is all a problem because the 30xx cards are hard to get ahold of; scroll through this thread or the GPU thread for plenty of discussion about that. The bottom line is that if you move your bottleneck onto the CPU, you'll still see improvements in FPS, and an up to date GPU will give you a more feasible upgrade path later. That is, you should buy today's GPU today, then buy tomorrow's CPU tomorrow. If you buy yesterday's GPU now, you'll be in a worse position next time you want to upgrade. EDIT: I don't think this is more helpful than what everyone else posted, but I'll leave it, haha.

No no, that sort of meta commentary is very helpful because I basically ignore hardware until I need to build or upgrade my PC, so I'm always clueless. I build PCs the way my dad worked on cars; I do it because it saves me money, don't think about it otherwise, and grumble the whole way. Anyway, sounds like the name of the game for me is to wait for a 30xx series card, which I can afford to because my current set up is ok for playing the game. Thanks all!
