I love the idea that correctly apportioning blame doesn't come with implicit lessons, like "stop voting for people who went to posh schools"

namesake posted:There is a distinct strain getting passed around and it seems to be getting dominant quickly so the idea that it is more infectious than other types is legit. However it is getting passed around and might only exist at all because our tiers have always been inadequate to contain the spread of the virus which is why we're rushing to a third lockdown already. Any more infor on Zero Covid? Who's behind it, etc? I think it's important for all of us here lefty types to hammer home that if four easily achievable things had been done early, we would be able to have a pretty much normal Christmas: - Lock down hard and fast, including shutting down manufacturing and all but the absolute, absolute essentials - Universal Basic Income, paid for by some combination of a one off wealth tax on the super rich and corporations, and borrowing (with negative interest bonds) - An effective and enforced test and trace - Mandatory quarantine, at specialised centres, of 14 days for anyone entering the country, with dramatically restricted entry for the duration. Pushing that line will stop them getting away with it. Especially when plenty of other countries did that.

We need a proper, full, 6 week lockdown. Curfews, checkpoints, military delivering food supplies. Only medical and other emergencies to be dealt with. I'm rather relieved Wales in in Tier 4 and England (I haven't worked out if all in Tier 4 yet!) - stops a lot of the family wrangling that's been going in since they all 'agreed' last Tuesday and have gradually been mutating what was agreed causing even more stress. Now, none of them can go anywhere, hurrah.

Now, after all of the undermining, wishy washy bullshit that's gone on (mostly Cummings) it feels like nothing will be effective. The last "lockdown" was largely ignored, the main difference being that pubs were closed. People have been trained by this government and its friends to believe that they can rationalise any rule away because their own circumstances are the exception. It would take police or military presence on every road in the country for a lockdown to be truly effective at this point.

FWIW I've seen nothing compelling that this new strain is more virulent. You can logically expect that when there is a larger pool of infection like London, you will have a greater probability of random mutation, whereas most reporting is implying the arrow of causation is pointing in the opposite direction. Furthermore, the emergence of this new mutation as the dominant strain in the south-east may simply be just chance - coronavirus transmission seems to be "chunky" and follow some sort of Pareto distribution, with large amounts of spreading starting from very few superspreader events. Remember, the initial virus was supplanted by the now-ubiquituous D614G strain, but there's nothing mechanistic to indicate this mutation was more virulent than the original. As it stands, bog-standard SARS-CoV2 is almost perfectly transmissible and there's probably no strong selection pressure to increase virulence. All that being said, it might be, so any competent government pretty much has no choice but to enact harsh lockdowns. The fact that the Tories are not a competent government and have hosed everything up to this point doesn't really change that afaict.

Feel very very bad for my parents, I'm an only and spent last Christmas in Australia since my sister-in-law and her husband were out there and spent the whole time saying to my parents that we'll make Christmas 2020 extra special (we go over every boxing day and stay a few nights). It's our last one as a 2 since we've got a kid on the way too. gently caress.

Sorry to all in the UK for this poo poo. Genuinely feel bad for everyone. With my Mum dying recently it would've been nice for me to be able to come back to the UK and see my family but it's been obvious for a few months that that would be a bad idea. Although it doesn't change anything for me I worry about my Dad and the rest of my family. I don't even know what the status is in Canada - no point in looking 'cause we were just gonna be staying home anyway, as we have been this whole time. In other news, my brother is in loving Tenerife right now. Stupid oval office. Don't know what he's playing at. I expect they'll probably be going to see my Dad (in his 60s, and probably doesn't have great lungs due to smoking for ~40 years before switching to vaping) for Christmas, though I haven't asked him. He won't be loving told anyway.
