Me too. Not that I doubt the V.A.s will try their best, but... The new area is promising more that full voice acting wouldn't.

Vocabulum.
In my mind's ear Drama and Visual Calculus were female voices.. I wonder if the skills will all be male voices.

In any case, can't wait to replay this with full voice. Also loved that when I early committed to Apocalypse Cop my outbursts became more and more unhinged and yet more and more specific re: THE GLOAMING the more I doubled down on it.

Finished my first playthrough!

The cryptid was a surprise. Managed to recruit Kim to my department because we're bro's 4 lyfe and didn't have to turn in my badge since I solved the case and also got a photo of a cool cryptid. Definitely left some sidequests on the table for when the final cut comes out - I didn't pursue a date with Leliana for one, and I didn't sort out what was going on with Cuno and Cunoese, or explore my clear homoerotic thoughts re: the smoking man. Got called out for having completely incompatible liberal-communist-moralist beliefs cause of random poo poo I'd said.

However, I did unlock the pale mysteries, solve the mystery of the church and the 2mm hole, open a drug-free night-club, convince Plaisance of the curse of the former taxidermy store after getting her daughter inside and getting a sweet hat, meet the dice maker and get a cursed die and learn about the ex-wife via sleeping in the bunker. Plus I can reinforce Lena's marriage which is nice because she gave me that cool pen.

So uh, I adored this game, especially how it was all great writing and talking and socialising with no combat (like a visual novel almost, except with slightly more running around) and how fun the characters all are, are there other similar games that come to mind?

Kentucky Route Zero is mentioned often as similar, though I didn't find it as gripping. Planescape: Torment has the best writing for a CRPG, though the themes are very different to the realism of Disco. It's a pretty unique game, probably why it's award-winning and got all the rave reviews it did.

Yeah planescape has plenty of running around, long twisting conversations, and some amazing major and minor characters. It has combat but it's largely just obligatory clicking around, and the main source of experience is doing weird things in conversation and completing quests, very much like Disco, so it's easy to keep levelled up.

Also there is a kind of important caveat as to what stats you should max to really dig into the story/dialogue the most, unfortunately. Disco was actually the first rpg brilliant enough to give equally interesting paths for every type of character.

PS:T and Disco are like distant cousins, but they occupy an otherwise barren portion of the CRPG family tree imo

Exploration is ill-advised.
There's definitely a lot of similar vibes with the DE protagonist being pretty close to a more grounded, noir take on The Nameless One.

White Line Fever

If folks like both Disco and Planescape, I also highly recommend Tides of Numenera. It’s not quite as good a Planescape, but it’s still a great game with deliberate combat puzzles, good writing, and a cool world to explore with great artwork. Some folks are down on that game and I’ll never understand that.

Everyone will (rightly) suggest PST and KRZ so here’s a more obscure suggestion if you want a game about walking around, talking and investigating a mystery: Hotel Dusk. It’s not really similar in tone, but I remember enjoying it and the presentation is quite stylish. Also classic adventure games like Grim Fandango, The Longest Journey.

I enjoyed Tides though while the writing was excellent, I didn't enjoy the combat (not that I enjoyed it in PS:T neither) as it seemed like the characters were underpowered and the skills infeffective. Maybe I'm being too harsh as I found other RPG's like Baldur's Gate and Tyranny acceptable.

About two days in game time in, I legitimately broke down crying IRL a bit after back to back talking to the old anti-communist vet and his friend after inquiring about the meaning of the flowers from the hotel roof, followed by talking to the Dice maker about the curse and unlocking the lines about the nature of roleplaying games and why people play them

Everyone hypes up the disaster cop dark comedy stuff and its hilarious but the moments of this game's writing also shine through in these really poignant, poetic ways and its loving beautiful. Gaming narrative is down hill from here.

Well said, couldn't agree more.

Mainly because it involves Harry running around half naked, taking a ton of drugs, and ignoring everything everyone says.

This is the first time I have actually seen the "bad" ending.

One reason I think dark souls is a good game is because the speedrun still retains a lot of the essence of the game. You run instead of doing clipping bunny hops, you fight bosses and you dodge their attacks.

In the disco elysium speedrun you still punch out the fascist and you stop being a cop in the end. Best game.

First time playing. Hell yeah I shot that body down. Feels good to receive praise from Kim, especially after embarrassing him so much...

I’m still coming back for those power armor boots when Kim’s not around to judge me for power gaming using a dead mans shoes.

Edit: Amended for *high* velocity. Cuno’s a real snot nosed kid, but there is no reason to embarrass him.

Edit 2: Either I have so, so many questions about the cosmology of Disco Elysium or Joyce is really loving with me. I should have waited to bring Kim with me to help me verify all this!

Edit 3: Secret task complete! Have your mind blown by Joyce while Kim isn’t around. Uhh I guess there is some Death Stranding type poo poo going on where delivery workers have to experience literal nightmare working conditions as the fabric of reality is breaking down. Guess I better get those power boots.

Edit 4: Guess I can’t get the boots after I’ve shot the body down.
