It's absolutely, completely insufficient on the dollar front and the checks-in-people's hands front. But there's also a lot of good poo poo that has been needed even pre-pandemic, like this:

https://twitter.com/rachel_roubein/status/1340811481298989056

Lots of vaccine money, education money, rental money, extended unemployment (though halved), an eviction moratorium extension, and backdoor money-to-states funding as well. Considering Republicans were absolutely, completely happy with $0, I call that pretty good.

The breakdown, pre-text release, is here:

What exactly is surprise billing?

Is it that bullshit where you pay your copay, the insurance pays whatever, and it's been like two months because of insurance paperwork and you end up getting billed a couple hundred bucks because insurance didn't cover everything?

Here's the explanation: https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2019/12/9/21003480/stop-surprise-medical-bills-legislation / https://www.healthsystemtracker.org/brief/an-examination-of-surprise-medical-bills-and-proposals-to-protect-consumers-from-them-3/

It's more about you go to an in-network hospital, for in-network care or an in-network procedure. Then oops, your anesthesiologist was out-of-network, enjoy your $18,000 bill from your insurance for out-of-network care! Congrats, you're hosed.

It was on-track to get done a while back, but Richard Neal (D - Massachusetts Insurance Companies) has been loving with things.

THE 12 BOYS KILLED in the madrassa at Omar Khail that winter night were among scores of civilians massacred during at least 10 previously undocumented night raids in the central Afghan province of Wardak. Beginning in December 2018 and continuing for at least a year, Afghan operatives believed to belong to an elite CIA-trained paramilitary unit known as 01, in partnership with U.S. special operations forces and air power, unleashed a campaign of terror against civilians. This story is based on interviews with more than 50 Wardak residents, including 20 survivors and firsthand witnesses and 29 victims’ relatives and local residents who witnessed the aftermath of the killings within hours of when they occurred. Some of those accounts were corroborated by local officials, analysts, and community representatives.

The 10 raids resulted in the deaths of at least 51 civilians, according to The Intercept’s reporting. In most cases, men and boys as young as 8, few of whom appear to have had any formal relationship with the Taliban, were summarily executed. Some died alone, others alongside friends and family. Several raids were accompanied by airstrikes or, in at least one instance, the detonation of hand-laid explosives targeting structures known to be occupied by civilians.

An attending Pediatrician when my son was born was out of network at the hospital...we later get a bill for $800. I tell them I have no intention of paying and I didn't consent for my son to receive out of network treatment, they say too bad you have to pay, I say no I don't. They keep sending me stuff, I call the insurance company, who looks into it and tells me to just ignore it, they weren't in network, it's there problem, which I promptly do...and that was it.

Yup my wife had to fight quite a while to get the insurance to cover an out-of-network attending surgeon. Like - it was an emergency c-section by the in-network pediatrician at an in-network hospital. We didn't have time to verify all 15 people in the room were in-network before delivering my baby who was stressed.

About the only "news" outlet I could find covering it was basically the Japanese equivalent to Breitbart, so it's not exactly gaining widespread traction over here, but I guess it goes to show there are people with trump brain worms all over the world. It looks like it's mostly just people that are vehemently opposed to anything and everything China, and trump is louder than Biden, so they automatically assume Biden is a Chinese plant in order to hand them Asia on a silver platter or something.

A bit more on this point from people analyzing the numbers:

https://twitter.com/HarrySteinDC/status/1340876092085821445

We might be paying too much attention to the checks (which hit everyone below $75k) versus the $1200/month (on top of state unemployment benefits) that get to the really hosed. That money did a shitload of good and there's more coming (though it's cut versus the early pandemic).

These are also being boosted by far right mutual aid. There's a reason alt right figures showed up in HK during the media's focus on the riots. It's to give the appearance of international support for their agenda; find a whackjob in another country that believes the same horseshit as you and spin them look as legit as possible to your less skeptical target audience.

Hey, does your planet have wiper fluid yet or you gonna freak out and start worshiping us?
Recently a buddy of mine needed an outpatient procedure that required anesthesia. The specialist and medical office were all in-network. The anesthesiologist doctor listed in the mark-up was actually an "in house", listed on the main website as accepting the insurance, and even showing on the insurance database as in-network. All good to go. Should all be covered, after co-pays, etc.

Three weeks after the procedure he gets like a $4500 direct out-of-network bill in the mail from the anesthesiologist. Oh, you see he's a doctor of our practice, and an in-network provider, but when he does anesthesia in the operating room, he actually works for Make You Go-Nite Nite Docs MD LLC and it's not covered by your insurance.

Maybe a bit of  but Dominion and the other voting machine companies are considering suing right-wing trash TV into the ground for their repeated false claims, and some First Amendment lawyers seem to think they would have a pretty good case:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/20/business/media/smartmatic-lawsuit-fox-news-newsmax-oan.html

It's long, but the gist is that Fox News could probably survive it, but since Newsmax and OAN are already setting piles of money on fire trying to build viewership it could be the end of the line for them...and it would probably also threaten the likelihood of a Trump TV being created post-inaguration.
