Orbital layers do add tactical depth I find as ships in low orbit have to fear orbital decay and it makes planetary rings meaningful. Try some scenarios with those in and see what you think.

The ability to move between high/low for the lock penalty can be significant when you are trying to protect a damaged ship from incoming fire.

Generally ships do gravitate towards low orbit to contest sectors etc but it is still relevant. For one thing it means strike carriers don't reach sectors on turn one as they have to descend two layers.

Very true - we'll keep those in as we play more - once we've tried the changed ground combat rules I'll post them up. It's not a major tweak it's just removing the buckets of dice

Saw this game demoed recently (Dropfleet), after further reading it looks really interesting. I normally hate playing human stuff in Sci-Fi, but I can't get into the sculpts for the alien stuff. Think I'm going to pick up some PHR soon. If anyone is looking to unload PHR/UNM fleets, PM me.

So I tried out the new minigame: https://community.ttcombat.com/2020/12/16/advent-calendar-16-2/

We had fun with it, I lost both times we played thanks the same unlucky crash while doing a loop. The main criticism I have is it felt like there was too much fishing for 6s while shooting thanks to every ship having evasion and only two ships having rules to negate it.

Huh, interesting. I've been totally checked out due to the whole situation making hobby play impossible for me (I guess I could try tabletop simulator sometime).

Only reason I can play anything is my wife is in the mood to do a game every once in a while, otherwise I haven't been out of the house for non-essentials once.

In any case, here's an incomplete run through of how a game of Flightwing went, with plenty of proxies since who's gonna have that many fast movers:

1 Brigand
1 Brigand
3 Corsairs

1 Ace Pilot
1 Close Call

vs

1 Athena
1 Artemis
1 Athena

1 Ace Pilot
2 Close Call

Round 1:

Artemis dive bombs a Screamer, taking damage from the maneuver but erasing it with ace pilot, and avoids the AA shot. +1 PHR

Brigand wiffs a shot at the Artemis.

Athena dive bombs, passes the maneuvers but takes a hit from AA. Lucky rolls wipe out the Marauder, and a stealth missile takes one off the Despot. +1 PHR

Corsairs come in at low level without issue and all hit the Persephone.

The other Athena comes in at low level and takes out the Despot, +1 PHR

Second Brigand takes out the damaged Athena, and the chain shot misses the other.

End of round 1: PHR 3 Scourge 0

Round 2:

Corsairs knock a Hera down to half.

Pictures get a little jumbled from here as I forgot to take some and I can't recall exactly how things went, but an Athena moves up and fails to damage a Brigand. Brigand then shoots down an Athena. +1 Scourge

Artemis does a 180 and uses a close call to reroll a failed maneuvers test, then gets a lucky shot off that takes out one Corsair. +1 PHR

Other Brigand moves in to shoot the Artemis and gets a miss.

End of round 2: PHR 4 Scourge 1

Round 3:

Corsairs do some maneuvers so they can get shots and pass all their tests, taking out a Hera. +1 Scourge

Don't remember what happened exactly the rest of the game, but here's the other pictures I've got:

Corsairs do more fancy maneuvers and take out the Persephone, +1 Scourge.

Artemis attempts to shoot down a Brigand and fails, taking a point of damage from the maneuvers.

Final score: PHR 4 Scourge 3

Didn't really plan out the picture/note taking or I'd have the last bits documented better, maybe next time. We had fun playing it and it was a pretty quick game, especially the later rounds as squads had been shot down. Didn't really explore much in terms of leaving the board and coming in from different board edges, or trying to demolish structures, and there's probably more to do with movement. Would want to try it on a 6x4 board since everything has such a large movement range but I don't have one of those kicking around!

For criticisms from one proper game of it, feels like Scourge stuff is just too evasive, especially ground assets practically demanding dive bombs to have a decent shot at getting damage through. PHR ships do have two damage points but are way more likely to take damage from a dangerous maneuvers test, while Scourge can do fancy maneuvers much more easily. Feels like I only won this with PHR thanks to some particularly lucky rolls, but would need to play some more to pass judgement. The first two games were a loss for me but didn't take any pictures and we played the movement/shooting all wrong anyway.

I like the Resistance and UCM ships, a little undecided on the others.

They aren't necessarily bad, buy I kind of feel like the design brief was to reuse existing moulds as much as possible? I guess they feel a bit too familiar to be exciting. Like whenever GW release a new space marine kit.

Scourge is the same body, with a new nose + crest.

I like it, but it's also one of my favourite models in the game

It depends on the rules/lore I guess? And also how many times they do this :P

Well if they fixed it I guess we should hope they are going back and fixing the original version as well. I gather that kit has always been problematic.

I love it. Honestly I suspect all of the behemoths will be cumbersome and hard to transport, but they will look great.

Also bear in mind they are begging to be magnetised because sod buying and painting two of them!

Mostly though I'm hoping these get enough press that people recognise that Dropzone is a live game getting new releases.

I've been moving house the last week and only today realized I had no idea where my PHR fleet was. Sometime last week, my wife and I did an inventory of boxes under the bed and decided that none of them was big enough to be of any real use, so they got dropped into the dumpster. I only just now remembered that my PHR fleet had been stored in one of those boxes months ago. RIP some of the best models I ever painted.

Ten new Battlecruisers coming for Dropfleet.

The PHR design has definitely grown on me, I wasn't too sure from the render tease. In fact I like most of them! The Scourge design looks like an angry shark.

I'm guessing the second PHR tease might be some sort of close action weapon? Or point defence? So many little guns on the fins!

Loxbourne
Apr 6, 2011

Tomorrow, doom!
But now, tea.
The PHR art style so far hasn't given them visible point-defence weapons. So my money is on close-action batteries of some kind.

What's the current state of torpedoes? Were they given a buff in the update?

From memory and looking at the pdf rules, I think they rolled back the experimental rules changes and they are currently working as originally written.

I'm honestly not sure if they did that on purpose or just forgot to update the main rules when they put the pdf together.

checking the rulebook i see the torpedoes with their updated stats (as in not the 1 attack 6 damage all or nothing stuff) so unless there's a different experimental thing they're largely in a better place

Ahh right, so they changed the stats to make them multiple attacks with lower damage. I honestly couldn't remember as it has been so long since I got a game in and have seen very few torps in action!

I was looking at the launch, thrust, shake-off parts and didn't see any change from what I remembered.

PHR/Shaltari rules teaser!

I think I want the PHR kit and to break out the magnets. A ship that drops dense debris fields which only affect your opponent? Interesting!

And the other sounds like a very killy bullet magnet that is crying out to be given an escort of Calypso's and sent to wreck some heavy cruisers.

I'm less inspired by the Shaltari versions but they might be good?

That is the worst feeling in the world. I've walked through Southeast Asian traffic with a box full of minis more than once and I'm terrified every time that I'm going to misstep and get swiped by a scooter.

In a more positive update, I've effectively replaced the fleet at this point. I grabbed some mostly piecemeal because the idea of ending up with a second deck of PHR cards bothered me. So that means I have 2 battleships instead of the one battlecruiser since I found a guy selling them as a pair dirt loving cheap on Facebook. I also ended up with an extra cruiser and 3 extra corvettes, but that just gives me more flexibility. The corvettes and Resistance Grand Cruisers showed up literally yesterday since TT Combat took their sweet time making them available again, but hey I can't complain too much. Everything is coming together.

Well, it nearly killed me, but today I finally finished the Phoenix Fleet. There was very little joy in my painting these a second time and there are probably more flaws than I would normally have allowed. But the point was to as quickly and cheaply as possible get a playable PHR fleet ready for battle again.

2 Battleships: 1 of each
7 Cruisers: 1 Hector, 1 Bellerophon, 1 Orpheus, 2 Orion, 1 Ajax, 1 Perseus
8 Frigates: 2 each of Europa, Calypso, Andromeda, and Medea
6 Corvettes

The new Battlecruisers will definitely fill in a couple of holes I have...
