I've made a huge mistake.
I do think WPY should be seen as a sort of industry award rather than merely a pretty picture award. The context of a picture can tip the balance in additional to the aesthetics of the end result. So I think here the value of a hard-to-photograph and highly threatened species doing something interesting has outweighed the slightly heavy handed processing (which I think is a combination of shadow lifting and oversharpening). Decent photos of wild Siberian tigers are almost non-existent – even if you go to a specialist picture library like naturepl.com, they've got a total of 38 photos of wild ones, nearly all of which are distant or unflattering night flash. I do think the composition is off too and I don't understand why it wasn't cropped down on one side.

The same guy took [url=https://www.nhm.ac.uk/wpy/gallery/2017-arctic-treasure?tags=user.24483]this[url] so he clearly knows his poo poo. Interestingly that didn't even win it's category that year but I recall it was plastered over all of the merchandise.

If anyone needs inspiration, there's a Dutch nature photography conference that has switched online this year, running this weekend.

https://www.naturetalks.com/

There's a few big names in there I recognise and a bunch of Dutch ones I don't. I've wasted €50 on worse...

No idea why there in particular. I did a little googling and mangy ones may be a more mellow and diurnal, so more likely to be seen near people. Also a chance they are close enough to the city to be getting rat poison which weakens their immune system and makes the mange worse.

When I see coyote in more urban areas, more likely to be mangy. So, the ones I see on the golf course in highly urban areas look bad. At Cherry Creek State park, still surrounded by Denver, but it's a very large area of completely rural/wild nature, they're far more healthy. The one I posted in this thread earlier was the largest/healthiest I've seen. At my house, on top of a mountain, houses on one acre lots, it literally splits the difference. Smaller, not obviously unhealthy coyote. It's almost as if people gently caress them up.

Interesting. There is a group of three that hang around the Mezue Trail. Two of them have nice fluffy tails, and the other one really mangy.

I posted this eons ago, but we have some coyotes that look passable.

It's in the middle of Chicago's suburban hell but there's 9000-ish acres of prairie preserve which I guess is enough habitat to provide a decent life.

Unless it's wet out. Nothing fuzzy looks happy in the wet.

There's a small herd of bull elk that I've seen four or five times the last couple of weeks. No cows at all, 8 mature bulls, 4 or 5 young ones. Practice fighting, hanging around. Really not aggressive toward me at all, which is not the case when it's a mixed herd.

I really should have gone out this yesterday because the conditions ended up being glorious, but it was not to be so I braved standing next to my car in -15F windchill today.

Best winter we've had in Illinois in 10 years.

Also, bison are loving ugly if you stare at them too long. Gotta be careful when both eyes are in frame, they get super derpy when straight on.

Did you go to Fermi or Midewin? Keep thinking I might take the kid to see some Bison in the snow.

Edit: Clicked through after I posted and saw the location, didn't know about Nachusa Grasslands.

Fermilab is closed to all visitors for now, so don't go there. :v:

I like Nachusa over Midewin because it's more remote. In terms of bison spotting I think they're about equivalent.

charliebravo77

I went to Nachusa once before I had real glass and couldn't really get any good shots. Once it stops snowing I should take the shell off my truck and go back out and use the bed to get a little more elevation. Midewin had short-eared owls last time I went but I didn't see the Bison.

Camp the tunnel on stone barn road, it still needs luck and patience but they pass through there a couple times a day. Every time I've gone through there there's been at least one inside 400mm range along that road.

Cool, I'll check that out, thanks! I've got 600mm on a crop sensor so that should be good.

I think this one could really use a push to the right. Crank up those whites to the brink of overexposure, then back down a bit.

I think that's accurate processing for depicting snow during heavy overcast, but yeah, snow in photography is loving hard. Perfect accuracy doesn't seem to translate well.

Yup. White is fine as an exposure thing, but the color tint shouldn't be hosed with too far from what was happening.

Yeah, I pushed the exposure quite a bit already. It was a dark day with a fine haze and the original raw was pretty dark to begin with. I might gently caress around with color curves a bit more and see if I can brighten it up without doing too much damage. Snow is challenging, for sure.
