Those things are jellybean parts that retail to regular consumers at under $4. We actually built a version of this (as part of an overall "smart city" demand-gen project) that did smart truck routing based on realtime feeds of dumpster levels. It was a beautiful demo (especially since we were using regular trash cans to stand in for the dumpsters and could put a bunch of crumpled up paper into them and watch the truck's route change in real time), but things never progressed any further than that.
