Yossarian-22 posted:no he's saying to build the revolution and treat electoral politics as the secondary drama that it is, or are you telling people VOTE now the problem is that it's so generic and frankly, toothless and intangible that sure, it's easy enough to actually say without actually committing to it. and that he, as well, has a substack, so it's like the pot calling the kettle black here. he also fails to understand that what jimmy is doing is delegitimizing the government through spotlighting the squad's inaction and pushing people towards revolution, and over the past week has made explicit calls for it on his show. it's actually kinda hard to critique jimmy when you don't actually watch his loving show.

Yossarian-22 posted:This made me depressed https://yasha.substack.com/p/a-perfect-end-to-2020-for-the-left like a lot of his writing lately, this makes me alternatively nod in agreement and stare amazed at how he just blows it out his rear end any attention paid to the patreon poo poo is a distraction a best, willfully misleading at worse. oh my goodness, an astounding EIGHT THOUSAND people chip in a few bucks a month to some podcast hosts, this surely spells the doom of the left! and while noting that local and state elections and politics are important is good, suggesting a full scale retreat from federal politics sounds like loving suicide. ever heard of federal loving supremacy? enjoy watching all the meager gains you scrape together be bulldozed by some ghouls in dc.

I think the argument to build power locally vs. media that focuses on DC politics is a false dichotomy. Do your local building, etc., but also relentlessly message that the current political establishment is incapable of governing. Having an alternative media ecosystem to the corporate bullshit seems important. I also think it's good for people to know there are other people in the world who feel the way they do, especially in the face of the atomization that Yasha is talking about.

quote:So the Bernie “revolution” was a dud and disappeared right in front of our very eyes, while spawning a new prog-left media ecosystem that is very profitable for a few key influencers. Listening to their streams and podcasts — with their entrepreneurial hosts and pundits and panels filled with the same left celebs and climbers and NGO-funded left-liberal experts — it’s like they’ve recreated their own national-level media bubble, a low-rent MSNBC with the same sort of imperatives driving their output: revenue, celebrity, marketing, and the constant need for fear and conflict and hero and evildoer narratives to drive eyeballs and subs. you can split hairs about how much of a boon or hindrance to building social

Let them eat podcasts! What does that even mean? You guys like this stuff? You guys read that and thing, "yeah this is good political commentary"? You let that stuff make you sad? This is the big thing I take issue with:quote:and the constant need for fear and conflict and hero and evildoer narratives to drive eyeballs and subs. People are rightfully afraid and in conflict against a ruling class that is actively murdering them. There is no sham in pointing out that reality and providing actual context to it, instead of surrendering it to the neoliberal status quo of republican austerity bad, liberal austerity good.

Taintrunner posted:This is the big thing I take issue with: the hero/evildoer narrative he's condemning is quite literally the one you're describing but on the left. good squad/bernie vs. evil liberals if you're the typical podcaster, good anti-establishment/third party efforts against everyone else (including bernie/squad) if you are jimmy or brie. now it's good podcasts against bad ones depending on who you stan. felix pointed out cth the other day that this is mostly a media conflict even though he's open to the idea of voting out pelosi but yeah yasha has tons of beef with glenn greenwald so that more or less explains his bitterness with virgil. his substack has lots of axe grinding. he does good work though it's hard for me to look at this moment objectively and conclude anything other than that bernie, the squad, and now the online movement to pressure them are all big wet farts that will ultimately amount to nothing and that'swhy i found the piece resonant in spite of his obvious beefs. hopefully that will change if occupy 2.0 happens
