"The current system is worse than death" is an interesting argument against the death penalty

I mean if the reason you want the death penalty is to inflict suffering then yes, it's a very good argument against it.

If they do put it up to referendum, they're going to no doubt be hanging by the end of the week of the vote.

The Death Penalty always seemed like a political Pandora's box in the UK, because it'd be immediately hugely popular with the public, but you can't really undo it again.

Can't get no luck.

Had a good chat with my Dad today, and it's the first time we've really gotten into much specific politics.

He's broadly a lefty, thought that Corbyn was genuine and principled but thinks that he possibly didn't have the steel for the top job... which in hindsight I also think. He agreed with me that the right wing of the Labour party are awful people, and that Corbyn mainly lost because of the press pushing the false antisemitism narrative and that "there's a big difference between being anti-Israel and being antisemitic" which it something he came out with himself without any prompting or leading from me, so he's pretty switched on compared to most boomers.

BUT he did say that he thinks that maybe Starmer is being shrewd by laying low and not being labelled a "loony left socialist" (he put air-quotes around it, so he wasn't saying that he thinks being socialist is a bad thing), I said "well no, he isn't one" and we had a bit of a chat more generally - I mentioned that I think the press aren't attacking him because it's more convenient to keep him around, since they know he's not a threat. He didn't disagree but he didn't exactly agree either.

I definitely wouldn't say he's a Starmer "fan" exactly but I think he's giving Starmer much more credit than I am.

Still, it was a good chat. He echoed many sentiments I've had, like thinking "Am I loving crazy? Is nobody else seeing this poo poo?" but then finding more of a left-wing presence and people calling out the Tories etc. and feeling sane again, as well as just generally wanting a fairer world. He'd also picked up on the stuff that's happening with the Tories and the press attacking anybody with actual principles and I told him to look out for people getting called "Woke" and about "Virtue Signalling" as a dogwhistle.

He also said that he thinks the entire media is corrupt and working for the establishment "with the possible exception of the Guardian" and I laughed a bit and said "I wouldn't be so sure about that" and told him about some of the stuff in this article:

https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-09-11-how-the-uk-security-services-neutralised-the-countrys-leading-liberal-newspaper/

Which I have now sent to him - it's a good read btw if any of you haven't seen it, about how the Graun is in bed with the security services etc.

I sure hope the 'anti-death penalty' side make a much better argument than they did for the EU.

When I think of, for example, the Guildford 4 and the Macguire 7 who would have been executed but were many years later their sentences were quashed.

Dunno why, but this convo reminded me of this:

I have never heard anything good about Priti Patel and Kelvin McKenzie is a oval office for the suns Hillsborough coverage.

I really hope this gets no traction as reinstating the death penalty is a huge step backwards for a country.

As a bonus the death penalty involves pulling out of the ECHR/HRA which incidentally breaks some of the rules of the brexit deal already.

Fair play to talk about breaking it before the other side even approved it LMBO.

I 100% believe Priti Patel wants the death penalty back.

I 100% believe Boris Johnson will never touch it. Doesn't fit him from a cynical perspective (he's dying to be seen as the "liberal Tory" Mayor again), doesn't fit him from a media perspective (he wants wet posh dickheads like James Forsyth onboard more than The Sun, even appointed his wife as his head of comms), and doesn't feel like something he personally wants (never mentioned it before).

After Brexit, they're going to do everything they can to avoid ever doing another referendum again. They came out on top in this one, but it's been 4 years of the party almost falling apart.

The real risk, imo, is if/when Johnson goes and someone like Patel wants to be leader. No referendum needed, nice red meat to signal you're not anywhere near Cameron/May/Johnson.

Meanwhile, we're getting micro power cuts round my town just now. Got my torches lined up ready in case it goes off properly.

The JKR thing is interesting because I would say I have a broadly progressive/leftist group of family/friends on my facebook, outside of the odd crank and 'gypsies coming to steal your dog' posts that get passed around now and then. Having a trans brother and a good friend who is also trans has also given a big opportunity for people to have a proper think of things too. However JKR has just blindsided them as they can't quite believe the hatred shes getting. However when said trans brother/friend point out that the comments shes making and the effect it has on them and the things they feel they often come on side. The issue is that they see something coming from a 'sensible' person, not a raving lunatic in the mould of Tommy Robinson etc and so it starts to take root. If enough sensible people are saying it, maybe theres some truth to it.

Much smarter people than I have said it before, but I feel this is the gay panic of the 80's again. The arguments have been morphed to fit the new narrative, 'Gay Teachers are all peados' is now 'Men in dresses will attack you in toilets' but its still broadly the same, supported by broadly the same people and institutions. I've found explaining it in that way hits harder than trying to argue against the direct points. I get a lot of traction with 'Do you think all gay men are pedophiles?' When the answer is obviously no, I can then explain that a lot of 'sensible' people back then were saying the opposite.

I dunno, maybe I'm wrong in the way I go about it but it seems to have a positive effect and if thats all I can achieve right now I'm happy with that.

Socrates is at a party drinking everyone under the table (as he does) when some famous or important person arrives and says to Socrates "I'm worried about my wastrel son, can you tell me if he's a good person or not". And Socrates says "I'd love to help you, but I don't know what 'good person' means." "Oh, that's easy" says the guest, and the rest of the story is Socrates showing that no, he doesn't. At the end both of them agree that they don't know what a good person is.

Cheers! I don't have much truck with people insisting on purely biological (or indeed purely sociological, or indeed any fixed) explanations of gender but it is good to have more info when talking to people who want to understand but can't get past junior school biology. I get some of the way there with a Y chromosome function of signalling for androgen (& the idea that this comes in different amounts because the mother's body has to provide it and we don't all have identical hormone levels to begin with) but I don't know if that's still valid, or what new insights we have.

If nobody else claims this I would like it thanks. I used to play the original some 30 years ago...

The South African Constitutional Court’s first case was on the death penalty, which they banned (unsurprisingly). Patel is an awful woman. However, I am sure that if we got the death penalty here it would be applied in a totally fair and non-racial/classist way, just like it is in other death penalty countries.
