Just grab the backpack and hit the road. I too fall prey to the lure of tininess. I've never hosed with a telescopic rod I loved, but the daiwa minispin (below) and a 5'0 light ugly stik 3 piece GX2 are my favorite backpacking or toss on a bike rods. https://www.daiwa.com/us/contents/travel/mini_systems/index.html Really fun for grabbing trout out of high altitude lakes while on hikes.

If you move to tampa proper, cypress point park is an excellent starting point for reds, snook and to a lesser degree, trout. If you have yak hit weedon island across the Gandy or picnic island south of Gandy on tampa side. On the beaches it’s a whole different ball game, lots of snook in the passes and trout on flats 4-7’ deep. The bridges always hold mangrove snapper and sheepshead. The docks in St. Pete even have grouper and bigger snapper. Summertime 100+ lb tarpon are all over the place, especially at the mouth of the bay and skyway bridge. Hit me up when you get down here and I’ll take you out.

There is the before mentioned saltwater fishing, but you have some awesome freshwater too within an hour or so drive. What exactly you have near you just depends on where you are in the tampa bar area. To the north and east of the bay had some world class bass fishing.

I only fished in the area once and got skunked, down at the Fort DeSoto gulf pier, which rules. One thing that has happened every time I've visited there though are people hooking dolphins left and right.

Went fishing on the Red River. Got skunked mostly because I brought my emotional support bicycle and spent most of my time on it while my wife and friends (all in seperate tents) fished. Lots of marks and little guys but no keepers. Hard water is good. Morons driving on to the east side and having to be rescued by helicopter because the lake isn't locked up and the ice out on the west side keeps opening up... not so good. Stay safe deposit not get caught needing a ride in the whirly bird and having to leave your truck on the ice for a week. EvilJoven fucked around with this message at 14:01 on Dec 21, 2020 |

Well thread, I well and truly let things get out of control in a hurry but its fine. Ended up going with the Pflueger President XT Limited Edition 3500 and then a buddy sold me a Daiwa Regal 1000 for a song so it looks like I have an ultralight setup now as well haha. Once all the bits and bobs show up I'll have to get out and about Austin and start figuring things out. Scouting google earth for good bank fishing spots and ponds until then.

I was just in Tampa for my last interview, and everything looked pretty awesome as far as coastal fishing goes. St. Pete looked awesome as well. Given my disdain for driving, if I got the job, I’d likely live near my job southeast of the airport, but St. Pete also looked like a reasonable place to live. The commute across the bridge hopefully isn’t a lovely one if I decide to live in St. Pete.

I paid $5 and now my trout stamp and fishing license are the same document vs being separate pieces of paper. Would have been $2.50 if I didn’t want another crack at the trout. I also bought a busted ice auger in a Home Depot parking lot for $50 and fixed it with a $30 part, so I am now gas auger man.

Got all my poo poo combined when I got my waterfowl poo poo. CO fishing, CO small game, CO waterfowl, federal duck stamp, CO extra rod. Nice to have the paper in my wallet a little slimmer (and slimmer still due to all the costs. between those and Wyoming/Utah/Texas poo poo this year I've contributed a fair bit towards our public wildlife conservation).

I held onto it with the idea of bream or smallies but i just end up using a fly rod anyways. It's several years old but has never been used, literally still has the stickers on and is always stored in the case. Speaking of, Ill throw in this orvis case that fits everything nicely and fits under a car seat or in a pack. This arrived safely, thanks King of Bees!

May I ask for line recommendations? It's been 15 years since I was last out fishing and I'd like to Pass On The Knowledge to my nespring once this end of the world poo poo is over. I've only ever shore fished with 3 bait casters; 2 with 25lbs line for catfish and carp on Carolina and Santee rigs, and one with <8lbs for bait (and now dicklures ) Essentially, I'm hoping for some recommendations for coming back and not having to trial and error all the fishing lines and brands for mainline and leaders.

One good thing about all this lockdown business and working from home is I have had a hell of a lot of time on my hands to flesh out my Solo Skiff. Last year it was still pretty bare as I was working out where I wanted to go with it. I upgraded the power to a max for the hull 5HP 4-stroke, cleaned up the layout a bit and added Marine Mats for comfort and sound dampening, also added a cheap gps/sonar This past summer, it was so damned hot, I started to fish more at night, so I added a power system, nav lights, and fishing lights. Christmas week, Westmarine had a killer sale on marine electronics, so I upgraded the cheap Garmin to a Simrad Cruise 7" I've also started experimenting with using a DJI Mini 2 with polarized lenses to spot redfish. Here's some footage I dicked around with in DaVinci. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXfgSuvRBm8 edit: Forgot the fish! Farking Bastage fucked around with this message at 15:56 on Jan 2, 2021 |

All my reels are spooled for freshwater with 15 pound power pro or spiderwire, with some good ol trilene mono for leaders of an appropriate weight. I use a double uni knot if anything needs spliced, but my braids usually terminates in a snap or snap swivel, and i tie a single uni non slip loop in leaders so i can just clip them on. Most of my lures are pre tied so i can swap quickly.

I always thought those were neat and if I lived next to salt water and didn't enough storage for a boat, that would have been my option. For freshwater though, it gets you to the spot quickly but once you are there, it seems hard to keep under control compared to other options.

Speaking of boats what's a good recommendation for thermal protection I can put down on the floor of my aluminum boat? drat thing gets hot during the summer so having a thermal barrier would be nice and something soft of the feet too.

Carpet. Its no more complicated than that. There is also a big john boat community somewhere that you can look up the details for this in.

I'll have to hunt around for that community. I did initial research on carpeting but the glueing turned me off initially due to replacement being a pain in the rear end.

I like the Marine Mat type material myself(EVA Foam). It keeps everything cool and quiet and it's adhesive backed, easy to install and stays put. It also doesn't mold and it cleans up nicely.

Thanks for the recommendations, friends. I found one of those gold "Mega Cast" reels from Bass Pro in the side pocket of my tackle bag. I remember some drunk yuppie wandering over and dropping it on my stuff way back when and saying "you can have the fuckin' piece of poo poo." He had bought it that day and couldn't get it to work within ten minutes, so I got it cuz I was the only one on the shore with bait casters. I finally tried it yesterday. The clicker was always on, no matter where the switch is, so I opened it up and bent the clicker so it never engages and ain't life grand; the sumbitch casts stupidly well for having 15 year old terrible line. I'm going to make this thing work out of sheer spite, and use it til it dies.

How good is a Lew’s T200 Tournament Series spinning reel if I want something between slow and moderate action? Or does that matter? I ask because it’s on a deeeeeeeeeep discount right now and I’m wondering if I should jump on it.
