My mom hoards food, and cannot resist a sale, both to the point where they actually become detrimental, I inherited it from her. I had been pretty good for a while, but the loving pandemic exacerbated that big time, because I felt the need to stock up just in case. I feel like I'm sorta back to normal, except I can't seem to control myself when it comes to cute cat themed dish towels.

facetoucher cat posted:I never considered myself to be addicted to shopping. Always figured bc I'm not buying things for myself instead for the household it was okay I used to go thrift shopping at least once a week, which is where I get almost all my clothing and most of my furniture and most of my books and a lot of my hobby stuff (containers for terrariums, random items for costumes, etc etc). During the height of the pandemic here in Melbourne I was super strict about only shopping for essentials and never set foot in a thrift store and even after we got the local infection rate down to zero and most of the restrictions were lifted I still only shopped for essentials for another month. I really really missed thrifting. Finally I decided we'd gone long enough without community spread for me to start going to non-essential stores again and I went to my favourite thrift store and pretty much immediately went "Oh yeah everything here is junk and most of the time I never end up buying anything and most of the people here are rude assholes, this isn't actually that much fun after all." Honestly I think it was the 'normalcy' I missed

My US employer is planning to co-ordinate the acquisition and distribution of vaccines to its employees, and has been fairly transparent about plans and process. Health insurance provisioning in the US is largely handled by employers, so why not vaccination distribution as well. Also much like health insurance access, people who are unemployed or have crappy employers are just out of luck. It's almost like letting employers control access to healthcare is just a bad idea generally. Weird, wonder why people stand for it.

Like, what the gently caress do I do if I get vaccinated and then my boss wants me back in work? I don't want to be a risk factor for her. I'm trying to lean on my doctors to get her vaccinated at the same time as me if possible. Not that it matters since they currently don't have a plan for when the heart patients are getting vaccinated anyways. All that matters here in Florida is that the villages get their shots

mastershakeman posted:I know a lot of people who have spent the pandemic doing anxiety shopping. I don't know if it's uniquely american because we haven't had real shortages in forever, but they got super freaked out by the shortages in the spring and "need to see" what's in stock. They're also the type of people who lose their mind at the idea of doing grocery delivery or curbside pickup. I don't know why or how the shopping dopamine interacts with anxiety but it's one reason stores should have never been reopened and stuck with curbside only. I've never been one to go into stores even before the pandemic. Until a few years ago I'd go months without stepping outside, it was really bad and directly related to my massive benzo addiction. Once I kicked that I could do things like step off a 5 inch curb without help and progressed to climbing mountains but still rarely shopped in person I'm thinking the anxiety perspective is pretty valid bc I feel like a squirrel putting things away for safe keeping. We could easily be cut off from the world including water and electricity and survive for 6 months or more with just what food and supplies we have (minus cigarettes, weed, and a couple of my non "essential" prescriptions) but I still feel like it's not enough and I need to try and prepare for every eventuality My trail name is Base Camp bc I have literally everything needed and then some whenever I go camping. I even carry a huge messenger bag as a purse that has something for every perceived threat down to carrying fishing hooks and lenghth of line. I even carry a first aid kit everywhere with burn cream, a selection of bandages, and eyewash. I carry a fixed blade full tang knife and pepper spray too. poo poo I even have a mylar emergency blanket and small bundle of paracord plus a lot of other random items that would be used day to day or in an emergency and that's just in my normal purse I have an irrational fear that "SOMETHING" might happen and I will not be prepared to help either myself or someone else So yeah it's definitely anxiety but that anxiety has ensured my immediate family might fair better during this pandemic and random emergencies but I this overwhelming urge to keep preparing

Apparently you can just drive a couple counties over and get the vaccine in your car. Just have to say that you work at a healthcare facility and they let you on through. Bizarre. Fwiw my coworker and her boyfriend both had severe lethargy and fever for ~36hrs after getting the Moderna shot.
