Excuse you, my favorite NPC is Sellsword Luet and his twin greatshields.

Also I died several times in the gutter from falling, several times from an enemy following me from like halfway across the map, and at least once because i was getting ready for a jump, got hit by a poison statue, and staggered right off the edge of the platform.

Here lies Fistina, eaten by mutated dogs in the gutter after falling through the floor.

Lighting all the torches in the gutter is quite satisfying and I enjoy my time there when I'm not poisoned.

The Gutter is a cool area and the lighting fires mechanic is fun.

I blundered into the Gutter by testing out the cat ring by yoloing down the big hole in Majula. Suddenly it was very dark and claustrophobic and...is that a brazier?

Yup. I tried keeping to the right when first presented with the toppled building, and it turns out that's the wrong way to go about it. Oops.

Finished up my latest playthrough, powerstanced spears. It was pretty fun, though I think I enjoyed my powerstanced axes and crossbow only runs a bit more. Finished it off with my usual tradition of respeccing to a bone fist build to go gently caress around in co-op spamming jump kicks.

I checked my saves and realized I have over 1000 hours in sotfs alone, not even counting the playthroughs on the ps3 version. Hell of a game.

I made a weird hexer build that never actually used hexes, but I had powerstanced dark infused silverblack spears which was quite fun and very strong with a RoB/Flynn's/old leo/dark clutch ring setup. I couldn't really get into the spears that didn't have the partizan swipe attack.

Greatlances are more fun I think but I already did half a run with them so I wanted to switch it up.

Given the powerstanced spear moveset is pretty much all thrusts, it's worthwhile to have the spear swipe somewhere anyway.

Apparently, someone's worst nightmare was the world's biggest Avelyn mercilessly hunting you down. Forever.

is there a recommended time to attempt the DLC? I'm at soul level 120ish with a Sorcery Rapier build, have killed Rotten and Lost Sinner, and am very very bad at this game.

Once you get that rapier to +10 you'll probably be fine. Attack spells don't do poo poo in the dlc but magic damage on weapons works fine.

You can start around when you unlock the last DLC, so after you have killed the four great souls. It’s all endgame difficulty

You can start dipping in and out of them after you light the primal bonfires, but you might not feel comfortable with some of the harder bosses until either right before you challenge the final boss of the base game, or after because DS2 doesn't auto-push you into NG+, so you can still putter around and wrap stuff up before you jump into a new playthrough. SL120 should be enough to finish the game though, are there areas you're stuck at?

As far as difficulty overall, I'd say Sunken King and Ivory King both have easier areas to traverse, Sunken maybe slightly more than Ivory. The bosses in the two are about a split on difficulty. The ones you find easier or harder will probably depend most on your build and play style. Iron King has some extra annoying gimmick stage hazards and two of the most famously difficult bosses in DS2.

I think Sinh's a little easier than Elana, but he still requires you to be pretty good at dodging swoops and positioning around the toxin clouds he drops, something which is actually fairly unique amongst Souls bosses.

The rapier's also one of the highest DPS weapons in the game, so it'll be solid even against enemies with high elemental immunities.

If you go all in on dark magic, it's actually strong enough to deal good damage in the DLCs. It might take 3 dark orbs to kill a sanctum guy, but by the time you make it to the DLC, you probably have 60+ of them and all the herb you need.

I’m a bit surprised you’re disappointed by the Greatsword since it’s my usual go-to recommendation! But other good options include the Large/Great Club since you can pancake enemies with them.

i really liked lost sinner's sword because it hits hard and has low weight for its class for the very marginal trade-off of minor health loss on strike, but it might be too much like the greatsword for your liking

instead of ultragreatswords you might like regular greatswords since they're much faster and can still pack a punch, the mastodon greatsword has very solid strength scaling iirc for eg

I like the Pursuers GS for my ugs when I feel like one. On a dark build though I super dig the Crypt Blacksword if I wanna smash dudes into paste. I wouldn't call either of these fast.

If you like dex, have you ever used Lucatiel's Mirrah greatsword? Its an amazing weapon in ds2 and 3. Otherwise on a str build you might like a gs as others mentioned, or perhaps a twinblade?
