If you find out that it's also not real, you get shunted into another level, also a simulation, which also purports to be the "real world", and so on and so on. Each level entrances more and more people until after x number of simulated realities inside of simulated realities you finally get down to just a few deeply paranoid contrarian assholes who will simply not accept anything they see or feel. Like an easily manageable number, less than 10, and you can just put those people in a box. Like an actual physical box made out of concrete This is basically exactly what I always felt about it Some people can't deal with being "in the matrix" so they get told they aren't, but you figured it out! and they are mostly satisfied with the matrix and then some of them start to fly and poo poo and the 'bots need to move them up a level so they'll be satisfied

They see themselves as the few brave shining knights holding back the mongrel hordes, and a little bit of visual set-dressing and Hollywood code making the Empire into samey dehumanized automatons in slick uniforms works just as well for a fascist viewer to see it as a winking stand-in for brainwashed liberals and protesting students as it does for us to see it as directly depicting the empowered fascists themselves. They have no problem seeing the Empire as the bad guys even if they're explicitly dressed like Nazis. They think they're smart for seeing as subtext what we know to be the text Plus Americans are a special case of that where our founding myth makes us into the rebels to begin with. America subsequently becoming the dominant global superpower isn't a repudiation of the righteous revolutionary narrative, it just means we did everything right and we're a Good Empire actually

My Matrix sequel plot idea was that we'd find out that the original human-machine war ended with a negotiated peace instead of the machines winning. The environment would have been trashed by that point and the settlement would have had all the surviving humans voluntarily going into the original paradise Matrix instead of crapsack reality. The machines get the physical world, but also the responsibility to run the Matrix infrastructure and keep the humans alive in their pods.

The Matrix is nested in another Matrix, and isn't actually pointed at the humans, but at the machines. It's an outlet for machine aggression after Sentient AI is created in the future. AIs go to "sleep" wherein they experience an entire morality play where they are taught that a war with humans only eventually results in the downfall of both sides, the true path forward is peace and cooperation, and that in essence humans can't ever be properly suppressed or controlled. When the matrix reboots that's simply the hard system reset. The ending of the movies of a soft system reset. The oracle says the peace will last "as long as it can". Eventually I'm sure the # of humans still in the matrix increases to it's original # and some sort of falling out happens between the two sides and a strangely similar war happens all over again. The machines end up in the same position making the same peace deal learning the same lesson. This way your sentient AI car doesn't try to murder you every day.

I am hoping Keanu is "The One" number 7 though, as it would show the Matrix is back at spitting out anomalies.

The next Matrix sequel could be Wall-E, but instead of a ship in space, it’s just some pods hooked up to a server, all while the robots clean up Earth.

This is ridiculous to anyone with a high school education because it's a flagrant violation of the Second Law of Thermodynamics but is hand waved away with ther word "fusion". In the original script the machines were using people's brains for processing power but (I think it was Joel Silver) thought this explanation was too complicated so it was changed to humans=batteries. Yeah it was completely fucktarded but I guess the Wachowski sisters borrowed a lot of material from some manga/anime. Which explains a lot.

It does make sense though - when someone tells you what a battery is, you can immediately think of exactly what it looks like & does. Car battery, AA/AAA battery, watch battery, it's easy to picture & sort of conceptualize. Now, go ask any random person what a CPU, processor, neural network, multi-threading, etc. mean & you'll likely still get a reaction, even though the tech has been around & common for a couple decades. I mean, lets be honest here - we've had touch screens & self-checkout machines at stores for over 20 years, yet people still have trouble figuring that poo poo out. No way you can tell me any of them has a clue about tech jargon when they're asking their 8 year old to fix their iPad for the 11th time this week. Yeah, what they were saying is they would have liked a reveal that instead of the robots winning outright and enslaving humans, there was an armistice and the negotiated peace was "we'll go voluntarily into the tanks if you give us a simulated utopia" which they then rejected. I don't think it would have worked as a conclusion but I like how it mirrors what Joe Pantoliano did.

DontMockMySmock posted:Isn't these parts of your post already basically established Matrix canon? You know the "real world" is another simulation because Neo can do magic in it, and you know Neo is an AI construct because the Architect and the Oracle tell him, basically, "The One" is an essential part of the Matrix ecosystem, much like themselves who are also AI. IDK it's been a long time since I saw the Matrix sequels so I may be extrapolating/misremembering on the "Neo is an AI" part, but I definitely remember coming out of the theater like "okay so the 'real world' is also a simulation, but, like, why? is there a real world at all? wtf they explained nothing." In the Matrix MMO (which as far as I know is all canon) you find out that Neo and Trinity were manufactured by the Oracle to be biological interface programs; basically machines made with human DNA that don't require interfaces to connect to the Matrix or communicate with other machines. A WiFi person, basically. When Neo's in the real world he cant fly and doesn't have super strength or anything, but what he can do is overload sentinels by wirelessly communicating with them and sees anything that emits the signals the machines use. Apparently the Merovingian also does a bunch of sleuthing and finds that there are only about 300 million people in pods in the real world, which is not enough to power all the machines, so they must actually be being used for something else, but the game was shut down before that story line could be explored more.

Star Trek figured this out sixty years ago "The Matrix runs on the processing power of our own brains. The human brain is the most efficient computer that has ever existed, and with millions of them running in sync, there's enough to power a thousand more simulations on top of this one. They steal our dreams to build our prison."

I always assumed that the “real world” was real in the sense that it wasn’t a simulation in the machine’s direct control. However it was a system of indirect control because the humans who existed in the real world were still interacting with the machines by fighting against it. If any of the people in Zion actually gave a poo poo about being free from the machines they’d pack up a hovercraft and sail off into the horizon, never to be seen again. In the end Neo did exactly what he was supposed to do and allowed the machines to maintain complete control on the promise of the machines playing along with Neo’s request. Zion is all but destroyed and the machines retained technological superiority, so once the humans get rowdy again it’s right back to square one. Neo's peace agreement was that the machines leave Zion alone in exchange for allowing himself to be plugged into the source code, which allows the machines to destroy Agent Smith when he infects Neo. The agreement wasn't as much that they live in harmony as the machines will let the outsiders live alone if they reject The Matrix. Have an completely unrelated funny picture because I'm hungry:
