im not sure where youre going with the kpop analogy but yes ethnic korean immigrants to the west tend to be hypernationalistic precisely because those were the only people the dictatorship allowed to leave and anyone trying to just bullshit their way through the process would be smart enough to shut up about how bad the government was when theyd escaped from it

this is how you get the bewildering contrast of ethnic korean immigrants tending to believe fringe right wing conspiracy theories like moon jaein stole the election and more respectable ones like park chung hee singlehandedly saved korea despite this being highly counterintuitive relative to the actual circumstances behind their diaspora

this political disconnect is probably the single most disorienting thing for ethnic korean children of immigrants to take in because if youre ethnic korean born in the united states people like the ones in kims convenience are reasonably accurate facsimiles of your parents but in korea proper such people would be seen as complete fruitcakes like imagine if you grew up in a mormon family of immigrants from the united states and were led to believe all americans were like that growing up it would really gently caress with your self perception when you tried to come back

This confuses me. You imply that it is Korean immigrants are kusanos but then say that Korean immigrants would seem goody two shoe fruitcakes to those in the mainland.

that was my intent yes

ironically in the context of american politics many of these same immigrants would consider themselves to be liberals and in fact generally vote for democrats although trump cut in hard on those numbers this election just as he did with everyone else who wasnt a white male suburbanite

i wouldn't know though. i made an older korean friend, in his 50s, playing amateur tennis. he could totally kick my rear end at tennis and run circles around me. moved to the U.S. because he didn't want to subject his kids to the korean school system. lived there under the park chung-hee dictatorship which he had... mixed feelings about because there was economic growth but it was also a brutal military regime. he was a student when the government cracked down on student demonstrators.

very devoutly christian and very involved in his church. but at the same time, pretty left-wing and was a fan of thomas piketty. his english was not very good but when we got to politics after a few months of tennis he was like "do you like piketty?" he worked at a factory making helicopter parts (harnesses etc.) and was way more sophisticated than a lot of people here in texas IMO. lost touch with him.

he ended up getting tickets to a texas rangers game from his church because they have a korean right fielder. so i went with him and his church buddies and ended up in the korean-american section cheering this guy on. that was fun. there's a pretty sizeable korean community in this metroplex and they have some really great restaurants, and going to their part of town is like visiting a global village. there are expats from all over the world who go to koreatown. bakeries. supermarkets. fried chicken places with big screens playing kpop music videos. extremely modern and cosmopolitan. good stuff.

It seems to be a phenomenon amongst many diasporas. I read a thing about Indians who visit diaspora Indian communities in Britain and being surprised that everyone there still wore Shalwa Chamises that looked like they were still from the 1960s or something. You leave the old country and are just frozen in time while the old country moves on.

chinatowns in the U.S. probably seem like they're still patterned on the qing dynasty to mainland chinese. or at least the older ones like in S.F.

Wut, a salwar kameez is still a pretty traditional indian outfit. If you visit India you'll see them all the time. From my general experience with the Indian community in the US, the older generations wear them all the time, where people like my mom and her Indian friends will wear them to formal events.

It's made a big resurgence with the newer generations that want to get more in touch with their roots.

I'd qualify that with people who've managed to immigrate "legally", but otherwise yes.

'Shanghai-based Clarisse Zhang is one of the youngsters who feels they have missed out on a golden period, when simply working hard could mean a ticket to a better life. The coder, who asked to use a pseudonym, has become an enthusiastic convert to the touching fish philosophy. She now arrives at work after 10am, and leaves the office at 11.30 to have lunch, which could last over three hours. “Sometimes I put fake appointments on my calendar in case anyone asks for me,” she told Quartz. She will also go have a nap or read books in her car, which is parked near the office, when she doesn’t feel like working.

'“‘The ‘touching fish’ trend is tied up closely with intensifying involution in China,” says Zhang, who works at a listed Chinese internet company. “People who have the capacity to compete are using all their strength to squeeze out rivals, while people like me, who don’t have that kind of energy, chose to lie down and be happy losers,” she says.'
