Hello, interior design thread! I need lighting/shopping advice. We are painting our cabinets (excuse the mess), doing a backsplash (subway tile) and replacing these three fixtures.

We know we want them to be dark metal (everything else in the house is oil-rubbed), we want something roughly the same "fancy level" over the dining area (or keep this piece), something smallish/flush over the island, and something in between over the sink. We think something from the same general collection would be nice to unify the two "rooms" in our big, stupid 2000-era open floorplan. But everything we have been able to search up has either been off-the-shelf Lowe's type stuff or $500-a-fixture RH. Our budget is ... between those two extremes.

Basically, is there someplace I could be looking other than one million options on Wayfair? Anyone have a better suggestion for our setup? Thank you!

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1091-W-Ridge-St-Harpers-Ferry-WV-25425/22570446_zpid/ this 1927 Craftsman is one of the newer houses in its neighborhood. Harpers Ferry (one of a handful of towns in WV I'd actually want to live in) has antebellum buildings everywhere you look and if you are a fan of Colonial/Georgian/Federal architecture and/or a fan of John Brown I highly recommend taking a trip there after you've been vaccinated.

"Warm wood trim and mouldings throughout have never seen a paint brush in nearly 100 years" hell yeah

the interior ventilation windows probably helped tremendously to get air moving in the attic, thankfully there is central A/C now

I actually can't tell if this bathroom was original to the house and has been renovated or if it was added later, either way it's got a nice vintage-yet-modern look

it looks like they replaced the original carpet with carpet of the same color, I approve. The hanging lamp is original

is that light fixture on the left actually above the island? if you do a flush fixture for the left one, you may find it projects enough light that you don't even need one over the sink.

pendants are good for kitchen tables if you are open to that, and there are plenty of good options under 500.

here's some modern pendants that are either black or gray, and have at least one option <500.

https://www.dwr.com/lighting-ceiling/constant/black-gray?lang=en_US&pmax=500.00&pmin=0.00

I consider 500 to be a reasonable price for a really high quality floor lamp, but for ceiling lamps prices tend to be a bit lower so you definitely shouldn't need to spend that much.

I've heard "mid century modest" used to describe the vernacular version found in ordinary ranchers as opposed to the high style of Eichler, Neutra, Johnson et al. The Third Bay Tradition (aka "Sea Ranch style") was more casual and rustic than what was popular in SoCal and it sort of filtered down into the funky Brown (there's probably a real name for them but I just call them that because they are very brown) Houses of the late 60s-70s.

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/497-Windemere-Ave-Mount-Arlington-NJ-07856/39462829_zpid/ Oh this one is good. It's a Craftsman house built in 1904 from plans provided by Gustav Stickley himself. Stickley published most of his plans in his magazine The Craftsman (which I once again recommend reading if at all interested in early 20th century art, architecture and/or socialism ) and in 1904 he started the Craftsman Home Builder's Club to provide plans by mail. These plans were incredibly detailed, down to the colors of rugs and furniture, but because many were built by laborers and in parts of the east coast that are now full of tract suburbia, few of them have survived without being significantly hosed with. All this is to say that while I am happy with how well this one was preserved, I am not happy that they put up vinyl siding where there would typically be either shingles or plaster-cement. And I am especially not happy that the listing says "Plans & approvals for elevator, indoor pool, raise & expand top floor, handicap modified." (the handicap modified is fine, even the elevator, but of all the Craftsman houses you could pop-top please don't do it to this one).'
These front doors bother me.

This is actually about as much furniture as you would find in a Craftsman living room, there would be rugs and probably a large writing table in the middle but the aim with the built-ins and closets was to minimize the amount of furniture the owner had to buy. That quote about how you should "have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful" that is the basis of konmari comes from William Morris, a major influence on Craftsman ideology

Stickley's kitchens (and his rooms in general) were much larger than the standard at the time. This is fairly authentic though it would have been furnished with a table for regular meals and various kitchen cooking paraphrenalia strewn about

This is at least the third authentic Stickley house to come up for sale this year, after these two (which still have photos up, which are awesome):
this house is staged wonderfully but has had a few mods over the years https://www.sothebysrealty.com/eng/sales/detail/180-l-1779-2535nv/27-sagamore-road-maplewood-nj-07040
this house is practically original - not even an extra bathroom! - and in decent condition but probably needs updated electric/HVAC/etc and a new roof, but even so I am shocked at its price considering it's in Long Island https://www.corcoran.com/nyc-real-estate/sold/no-neighborhood/1-edgehill-road/6090503

I just think of keywords/phrases that might give interesting/cool/weird good results but aren't too common where there's a bajillion houses with little relation to each other to comb through. I'm an architecture history nerd so that helps, doesn't help when people label every 19th century house as "Victorian" and every postwar ranch as "mid-century modern" though. After a while you get to where you can translate realtorbabble and recognize the turns of phrase they like to use. I have a little post-it note of potential future terms lol.

I can dig it. It's meant to evoke the age and grandeur of a plastered villa that's crumbled a little showing the brickwork underneath. It's not really my aesthetic, I wouldn't mix brick and stone, and I wouldn't do it in the bathroom (Maybe it would be, like, patio accents, pool house, you know, something exterior) but it's well-executed. Not like the tumorous stick-on brickwork you can find for mcmansions.

Pip-Pip old chap! Last one in is a rotten egg what what.

Opinions and advice requested:

We have this little built in ledge at the end of the bath, it gets 2 baskets (adults and kids) for toiletries and one for various dental stuff. I'd like to replace the baskets with a nicer way of storing things. Also the tiled bit is fractionally lower than the end of the bath so any water that gets on to it ends up dribbling down the corner onto the bathroom floor. I'm going to put a little bead of silicone in the nearest corner to stop that but long term I guess the real solution is to rebuild that bit higher than the bath.

Quick solution is a tension pole shower caddy. Long-term solution is a mirror cabinet over the sink and/or replacing the whole sink with a vanity and drawers.

A real Portlander now
So I have shelf color questions. Most of the wood in my apartment area is a warm oak and my couch is bright loving red. Not sure what color I should lean towards on the shelf along with the support metal color?

Our lamp is a dark black with a natural linen color shade and the accent pillows are a dark navy. I was leaning black for the supports and oak for the shelves. I'm thinking white on white would be too modern and clash with my oak sideboard it's going above? Cool thing about these brackets is I can use whatever wood/MDF I find, which I'm leaning towards cheaper cause we want to move across country next year. We have low ceilings too. Would that be too much oak/too matchy? Not against painting some cheap planks if I can get my hands on some in the middle of NYC

Here are the supports. Only getting these and finding the shelves over here cause lol at the shipping MDF planks to the US
