IM STILL SPENDING MONEY FROM 1888

Vermain posted:

yep. it's 100% about protecting turf and entitlement. your average NP could do the lion's share of what a doctor does but, aside from a few experimental clinics over the years, they can't run their own practices

never forget that the biggest impediment to publicly-funded healthcare in this country wasn't even political parties: it was doctors stamping their feet about not being able to squeeze sick people for every penny they had

Yeah the nurse practitioner thing is probably the most disgusting part of the current system. They are doctors in everything but name. Yet they are paid far closer to what a nurse recieves than what a doctor gets.

I just can't stand doctor hero worship. They are some real hero doctors out there, my daughter has one, but they are really and truly exceptional people. The vast majority are greedy pricks who reinforce a heirarchical structure at the expense of patient care, and are borderline replaceable by a nurse and a computer algorithim.

Maybe we should stop hero worship entirely and realize that putting the burden of a functioning society on a subset of workers means those workers should be fairly and adequately compensated and if society can't function without them maybe the profit motive for the companies that employ those positions should be removed. If they are already public they should have the training and education paid for to ensure that the skill set and base of workers is there to absorb any future shocks to the system.

Or we can establish a cartel to artificially limit the number of students we train to enter this profession so we can make as much money as possible!! Then we can campaign through the media every time our pay is under review and just threaten to leave everyone high and dry and gently caress off to america!

Nurse Practitioners are a symptom of the problem wherein they are seen as a cheap way of expanding healthcare access. They can offer a great way of offering specialized follow up for certain stable conditions but the US should be a grave warning of what could happen to us if you treat them as 1:1 replacements for doctors and shove a family med nurse in an urgent care alone for 24 hours.

Doctors are people too. some are poo poo, some are great and their unions are really good at getting them disproportionate pay, but they’re an essential part of the healthcare system and you’re a loving idiot if you think they “don’t work as hard” as their nurses.

Nah, and there is no such thing as a doctor's union. It's a cartel.

I would agree that this artificial limit on the amount of med school students is very worrisome. I've heard arguments they only want "the best of the best" since the time I had to sent university applications almost 20 years ago but my family doctor at the time laughed when I said that and told me he and his buddies barely had passing grades and they still got into med school. Then years later things got insane and suddenly you needed like 95% average just to have your application considered.

It absolutely is a cartel, although this doesn't mean every doctor is an rear end in a top hat.

Yeah being gatekeepers to the profession and also gatekeepers to life itself makes them a tad more powerful than other unions. Librarians need almost as much training as doctors (in terms of higher education hours), have a great union, and yet get paid less than nurses :v:

You can't just expand med school spots because you need to expand residency spots or else you have a gently caress load of unmatched useless med students at the end of med school. I find that provincial governments love to boast that they're going to expand med school spots but it's completely stupid and useless if they're not going to actually do something with those med students. However I'm not sure whose fault it is that there aren't more residency spots...

With that said, med school admissions are ridiculous and arbitrary now and it's no surprise how many selfish trust fund kids I had to deal with in med school with the way the system is built.

It will be funny when we all find out he went to florida or something.

In other news this ontario "lockdown" is a joke. Pretty much all businesses are still open, they're just doing pickup or take out instead. Which means they're still full of employees on the inside (mostly not wearing masks because there aren't customers inside anymore), and people lining up like goons on the outside. I can't really see any difference. It's a lockdown in name only.
