gradenko_2000 posted:did Umbrella Academy lean into Russiagate red-baiting bullshit as much as its trailer made it look like it would Not at all, they go out of their way to show how lovely american society was back then including how certain government agencies used the red scare to torture people. They gang alter the course of history so kennedy never gets assassinated, instead there is a building that explodes which scares the kennedy motorcade in dallas. Kennedy blames the soviet union for it, and declares war on them which ends with them invading and nuking America.

The ussr did not reach nuclear parity in strategic forces with the usa until like 1968 tho. At the time of the cuban missile crisis they had 20 or so icbms with a failure rate of 60%. The us at the time had around 200 and this didn't account for SLBM's which they had the advantage qualitatively throughout the entire cold war.

brief recommendation for beforeigners itself pretty brief at this point its a norwegian drama that isnt quite cspammy but it has all the right pieces including but not limited to vikings who care about weird viking poo poo and not just the bastardized usual viking pop culture stuff technically speaking its a long form police procedural with two connected cases neither of which are really solved as of the end of the first season but its all framed around a broader scifi mystery and my favorite bit to date is the useless racist cop whose only contribution to any conversation is to come up with contrived excuses for why she shouldnt have to do any work

Dr. Killjoy posted:social monarchist really reminds me of this weirdo a bit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haakon_VII_of_Norway quote:In 1927, the Labour Party became the largest party in parliament and early the following year Norway's first Labour Party government rose to power. The Labour Party was considered to be "revolutionary" by many and the deputy prime minister at the time advised against appointing Christopher Hornsrud as Prime Minister. Haakon, however, refused to abandon parliamentary convention and asked Hornsrud to form a new government. In response to some of his detractors he stated, "I am also the King of the Communists"

can someone explain to me why salmon rushdie is famous i finally tried to read one of his books the most recent one and it was wild but not in a way id really quantify as good the book includes a convoluted metanarrative one dimensional red state racists unsubtle criticism of daytime television inventing cultural degradation smart noble celebrities fighting for social justice angry twitter mobs unfairly attacking said celebrities in the name of social justice and more all done with just enough wink wink you cant quite call him out of touch since you could always just claim this is only what the characters believe and not necessarily objectively true most of it really is just things liberals actually believe to the point it makes me feel skeptical even about the more plausible parts of the story regarding indian sexism

The Satanic Verses fatwa is the start and stop of why Salman Rushdie is famous. Getting marked for death by the "Great Enemy" of Iran is to a lot of people the equivalent to personally spitting in Hitler's face. Doesn't matter if the book was any good or that Iran isn't actually an existential threat or even particularly notorious by the standards of authoritarian states. It's the narrative of those uppity Muslims being mad at one of our brave patriotic academics speaking truth to power about their heathen idols.
