This entire thread focuses on crimes that amount to intentionally hidden unknowns. Unknowns that are guaranteed to be bigger in scope and weirder than poo poo even we can think of. Speculation is all we can do to try to make satisfying guesses and models of what's happening in the unknowns. If the speculation too basic then it absolutely can't be right, because the organizations we are studying are 100% dedicated to hiding more than meets the eye, as they've done for their entire histories with misdirection campaigns for covering up crimes. Fact check all you want but there is no point in attacking a hypothesis with occam's razor in such an environment. Just let people make their guesses.

Forever ago I posted about a book I came across and ended up later reading called Think Tank Aesthetics by Pamela Lee. In it, she traces how she believes the founding and success of RAND and other prominent think tanks arising during the cold war shaped academic disciplines with their now heavy focus on mathematically modelling, operations research, and use of cybernetics for manipulative/military gain first, and anything else second. Pamela Lee is an art historian so the book overwhelmingly looks at the interface between operations research and art/art history. It was a real tough read for me because I have no background in humanities but the longer it sits with me the more powerful I think it is. She ultimately argues that the thought processes and motives of think tanks have transformed into a blanketing aesthetic over much of western society that feeds off of constant confusion/misinformation, open secrets (letter agencies operate publicly, harbouring off limits secrets), and the eradication of history (she argues that think tank aesthetics support the idea that a pollack painting is like an inkblot because, under their approach, both can be reduced to visual art that needs to be decoded, akin to the heavy focus on decoding other cultures and intercepted messaging during the cold war. to them, the history/context of each work is secondary, at best). Whereas I understand why Lee starts post ww2 because she traces the line from think tanks to how we treat humanities in the modern day, I think anyone in this thread would agree that there's a larger process that started earlier, and that this academic perversion is just one facet of it. Anyways, super weird but cool book that ends up characterizing modern day media exemplified by how we read bout events like this.

I remember hearing that Ghislaine fled the country during the exact window when the Customs and Border Patrol system went down nation wide. Has anyone found an article of something that links to that? Because "random pot-head guy manages to take down the communications for a large section of the country for several hours despite it not being publicly known that said building was a major node for communications infrastructure" reminds me of that for, uh, reasons.

I think you can definitely argue that lowering the age of consent would benefit many porn site owners who already host material that skirts the line problematically (of age and of porn vs not porn) and also hosts of revenge porn, which from what I can tell gets punished primarily for the revenge aspect while ignoring that minors are also often involved I tried to look up sisea articles but got too grossed out when tiktok ads came up for all of them
