Milo and POTUS posted:Would that be a bigger power drain? If the TV has dynamic backlighting and the owner watches a lot of dark shows, it’s plausible. The difference wouldn’t be large, but it may trend in that direction.

Milo and POTUS posted:Would that be a bigger power drain? It just looks to me like the TV would be doing a lot of extra work... it's probably not, it might even be a static image, but I just imagine it to be a big lightshow and having that happen in "sleep" mode seems like a less efficient use of power. It was mostly a joke, but it's still certainly using more power than shutting off the panel, which doesn't make a lot of sense to me if it's supposed to be sleeping.

I thought it was the old "turn on your monitor" joke. The viewer would think it's off because they are accustomed to seeing a big butthole reflected in the screen when it is off.

Memento posted:"check out the lovely art images my Samsung TV shows when it's in sleep mode" I have one of these TVs and I've never used the frame functionality because you have to sign in to some stupid Samsung account, and if you want to use more than the 12 free images they give you, you need to pay a subscription (or upload your own images, but I can't be bothered). Regarding the power draw, it's supposedly about 30% of watching normal TV, so it still wouldn't be trivial to have on all the time.

There was an episode in the latest season of The Mandalorian where Bill Burr has a dramatic scene where he shoots a thing and Auralnauts did a whole video about "You should have said Maclunkey first, it would have been cooler" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-E0h6Pu6t5s And then in the "Disney Gallery" series which shows the making of that episode it turned out that Favreau and Filoni actually discussed whether he should have said Maclunkey at that moment when they were filming it.
