Fully automated luxury communism is the book but it isn't a concept he came up with. It's a very old utopian idea. Gay space communism is the delicious memeification of it and I wondered if anyone here can take some credit

With the world beating track and trace system: What's happening with it? I don't venture out much, but I've not seen any signs for it anywhere, places that had it have now taken them down, nobody I know talks about the app besides one or two people ITT saying they ignored it as they have been playing disco elysium all month. Seems especially ridiculous now that we're getting 50k new cases a day and schools are being forced open tomorrow and children don't have to wear masks. Even during the famous Blitzkrieg they had fun masks I know the answer to all of this is that the government are malicious, greedy poo poo heads that think this won't affect them personally so why bother, but the difference in reality and public relations is getting so extreme I'm struggling to comprehend how bad things are. I'm seeing it dribble down a bit in my managers at work stopping furlough from tomorrow and bringing everyone back to the office, people refusing to believe coronavirus is real etc etc. Its as if aliens had visited Earth and started to hoover up people and in response people just shrug and start talking about Strictly Come Dancing

The Govt is hugely incompetent, and is very aware that they've hosed this up massively, so they're telling journalists that they can't visit hospitals and telling hospitals not to let journalists in. Journalists being the pathetic little pissbabies that they are, none of them are willing to risk being kicked out of the "Offishal Guvverment The BBC decided during the middle of 2020 that they were going to focus on trying to be positive in their coverage. And, of course, the Govt isn't going to do anything that might make businesses angry, so they'll keep limping on with their worthless infinitely incrementing tier system. And Test and Trace was always dogshit, from the moment the Govt decided to make it effectively an honour-based system. But it's just the runny diarrhoea icing on the steaming shitcake that is every other part of this mass-murdering cadre's response to a global health emergency.

Recoome posted:isn't Drax a bad guy out of a James Bond book/movie? Moonraker? Fleming used the names of his posh mates for a lot of his villains. Goldfinger was named for the architect Erno Goldfinger whose cousin was a golf pal of Fleming, Blofeld for a school friend (whose son is the cricket commentator Henry Blofeld). Drax is named for Fleming's former commanding officer Reginald Drax, whose full name is the too-British-to-be-real Admiral Sir Reginald Aylmer Ranfurly Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax, KCB, DSO, JP, DL, who's the grandfather of that MP. It's a pretty spectacular example both of the ridiculousness of the British ruling class and just how bloody small and incestuous it is.

Mourning Due posted:Just had a dickhead on LinkedIn share this as "proof" that the pandemic is in fact a massive hoax and we're living in a dictatorship. There's not really a stats based rebuttal to what they're argung here because most of the time they're focusing on those limited numbers and ignoring context - so December occupancy rates might be the same but with a vastly higher % of them being more severe cases of COVID 19 requiring very limited access to incubators etc so there might hypothetically be the same number of beds around as usual but that's completely worthless if the patient you put in the bed then just drowns in their own fluids. April-June 2020 occupancy is way down from previous years because a shitload of elective operations were cancelled so people were at home rather than in hospital recovering and similarly with A&E the message the public had was 'Don't go to hospital for fucksake' so people didn't go to A&E for lots of reasons as well as all the pubs and workplaces being shut so there were less accidents happening. They disregard the excess deaths in April by flat out lying though - that respiratory death total isn't from the dataset they linked to and the ONS 'deaths in March and April from COVID 19' https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/deathsinvolvingcovid19intheuk specifically says there are 38,000 deaths involving the virus. So that last point is the major stats-based rebuttal I guess but everything about it is ignoring the context and then finding some combination of numbers that they think means something else was going on. Edit: To make it perfectly clear that they're lying my link states '5. COVID-19 defined as ICD10 codes U07.1 and U07.2' so they've lied by using the wrong ICD10 code range and claiming it contains something that it doesn't. namesake fucked around with this message at 12:25 on Jan 3, 2021 |

Pterry had to rely more on his PA Rob Wilkins as his capacities failed, particularly in the last year when he partially lost his sight, but the writing was always all him - Rob wouldn't dream of changing a word. What changed was that Pterry became less able to revise and polish the work. He also wanted to tell as many stories as he could in what he knew was limited time left to him. So what you're seeing in the later books isn't him becoming worse as a writer due to the PCA; you're just reading the first drafts.

The description of things getting more outlined and told rather than shown fits that so well. Pratchett's process was always EXTREMELY iterative and involved a LOT of self editing, and that's what he lost the ability to do when he lost the ability to both read and type himself. Id nevertheless recommend the Tiffany Aching series even in light of that, if you want a sense of closure. It gave a good one, for me.

It makes a persuasive argument that social media has massively increased political polarisation and led to the collapse of the centre. So the people clinging to centrist electoral politics are probably still thinking of that now-obsolete paradigm where there was a strong centre and elections could be won by appealing to it. I think it's more that the people that write that stuff are a small, incurious group who all know each other and just assume that the opinions held by them and their mates are generally accepted, rather than belonging to a small minority only.
