Lots of places have done it. It's not super complicated to set up, and probably should have been done 8 months ago.

I'd be fine if we just said "let's just have a GG with no monarch and keep everything else the same", anything else would be a clusterfuck that's 100% not worth it.

Rutibex posted:i think we should elect the monarch democratically for a lifetime appointment. they can have all the powers of the monarch in our constitution, no need for additional changes nah because once there's an election, candidates will give reasons that they should be elected, and will work to accomplish those, and bit by bit we get the U.S. system where the head of state has way too much power. On paper the monarch has a shitload of power in Canada, the last thing we want to do is give them a justification that they can use it. The head of state having absolutely no legitimate claim to represent the will of the people is a feature, not a bug. We should just get rid of the "you get to be in charge if you're from this german family who historically have done a lot of horrible poo poo" part.

It's so infuriating how nakedly fptp exists just to prop up entrenched power systems. What's that? The liberals won 70% of the seats with 34% of the popular vote and the NDP won 6% of the seats with 30% of the popular vote? Sounds like effective representation to me! So sensible how all of our democratic voting rules are legislated from a period when cars didn't exist and people still used leeches and quicksilver for their bad humours.

I'm still really loving mad at how badly BC messed up the proportional representation referendum. "You know the current system is poo poo, please select a new one." - "Oh gee, not enough people voted for one of the 5 or 6 options to beat FPTP." Heaven forbid we elect politicians to actually legislate, no the voter has to decide. It's just so libbrain.
