Also the PA GOP is low-key insane, probably on account of PA still being a swing/purple state in state-level politics. Reminder that a bunch of PA GOPers at the state level tested positive for COVID-19, then took in-person meetings with Dem politicians without telling them about their health.

Unofficial Goon Disney travel agent since 2014!

Tens of Goons served!

Hi it's me, your resident Disney dumbass. I was out running errands all day so I didn't have time to come here and drop them Disney truth bombs for you.

It's pretty common knowledge that I am drinking that Disney Kool-Aid. I get that it's not for everyone but for some reason, people who hate it love to tell you why they hate and pretty often. Some people think that not liking Disney parks somehow makes them more enlightened than me, a dumbass pleb, and you know what, that's fine. I have often said that I don't trust people who don't like Disney. Disney Parks have been a part of my life since I was 5 years old Epcot Center was the newest thing. I cannot describe to you why I love it, but I just do. Always have and always will. It's the one place where I can truly be happy. Yes it's expensive, yes it's capitalism, yes it's crowded, but it makes me loving happy. I love the music and the ambience and the magic and goddamn it, I love Mickey Mouse. I just do. I love talking about Disney, I love planning trips for my clients. Being a travel agent has truly been my dream job.

2020 is the first year since 2012 that I have not gone to Disney at least once and that's made me pretty sad.

seiferguy posted:

You can still get medical exemptions to skip lines! My cousin has diabetes, and has used that to skip lines before, even for rides like Thunder Mountain. You do actually have to show them paperwork, though.

Samadhi posted:

Rich people were hiring people with medical conditions/who were disabled for their trips IIRC and it caused the crackdown

So in regards to the disabilities card thing that Disney does, anyone can get it and Disney cannot require you to show paperwork that you need it, at least not anymore. HIPAA and all that. But it's not any more convenient than a FastPass so there's no real reason for anyone who doesn't need it to use it. What you do with it is you get a little card, you take it to the cast member at the entrance of the queue, they give you a return time. You go do something else until that time. You can shop or eat or do a different ride or whatever, and when your return time is valid, you get to go to the front of the FP queue. It's really so that you don't have to wait in the line. You can only have one return time at a time so it's not like you could hit up 5 rides, get 5 return times all at once and then just knock a bunch of poo poo out at one time. It just doesn't work like that.

Now, if you have a guest in your party that uses a wheelchair or ECV, you can use that to get fast tracked to the front but that's only at the attractions where the chair or ECV won't fit through the queue area. If your chair or ECV fits in the queue, you wait in line just like everyone else. And some rides do require you to be able to transfer from your chair to the ride vehicle yourself so that's something to keep in mind if you're traveling with someone who has physical limitations.

But Samadhi is right in that Disney had to crackdown because people were hiring "disabled" people to get them front of the line access via the old system. loving gross.

Impossibly Perfect Sphere posted:

The problem is that there are too many goddamn people.

Hey, totally agree my dude. I hate going when Disney is crowded. Don't know how to fix that though. It seems like Disney is trying to maybe price some people out, but I don't know what their endgame in that is, if there is one at all.

seiferguy posted:

If you're going to Disney, you've already committed to spending a lot of money so what's a little bit more to buy fast pass? Its totally worth it.

FastPasses don't cost extra. Anyone can use them, that's why they don't work, in my opinion. Universal does have a paid Express Pass option which I have used and since it's a premium, not everyone will buy it, therefore it's more effective. There are lots of theories about how FastPass makes lines longer which you can look up if you want.

That said, most of the time when I hear people say that they hate Disney, I ask them what they hated about it. Generally it's something about expense, or it was too hot, or it was too crowded, or it took too long to get anywhere. Then when they tell me they stayed offsite at a Comfort Suites instead of a Disney property, or they went in the middle of summer and didn't plan any FastPasses, or they went at Christmas (absolute busiest time of the year) and didn't plan any FastPasses, it makes so much sense why they hate it. There is a way to do Disney parks right and if you don't do them in a certain way, you're not going to have a good time. There is a level of pre-planning that needs to be done and some people don't like that. And that's fair. Maybe a Disney parks vacation isn't for you if you're one of those people and if so, you know, just don't go to Disney. But don't tell people how awful it is because you didn't put in the bare amount of effort to make it a good trip.

So yeah, that's my Disney effort post. If you want more questions answered, you know where to find me.

I remember it came up in some GBS thread or something forever ago is all. Which likely falls into the 'people who hate Disney love to tell you about it' part of things.

Was just wondering how they fared compared to the rest of the industry I guess. Action park says they're doing ok at least.

This thing that I rode as a kid is now in Colombia somewhere. I'd assume this is less true for the wooden ones, but I honestly don't know.

Oh that link doesn't tell the story, it was hilariously creepy if you weren't going on it with your friends/family. You put two or three people in each car, the biggest person goes in back. Then the next person sits in their lap, if there is still room the smallest kid goes in front.

October is my favorite time to go to Disney World. No major vacation holidays or weekends so nearly as much crowding, the weather isn't as horrible, and Food and Wine festival is going on in Epcot.

January for Disneyland for the above reasons. I did Space Mountain 7 times in a row without waiting in line at all and did it a total of 12 that day.

October used to be a great slow time to go, but over the years Disney has offered free dining to drum up business and it worked a little too well. With Food & Wine and the Halloween parties, October tends to be one of the more crowded months. Now that Food & Wine and the parties extend into September, I've found that the week after Labor Day is a better time to go, crowd-wise.

September, October, and even early November are still brutally hot. We went something like Nov 12 and it was still in the 90s. I prefer mid-December or January for the best weather.

Covid has hosed everything right up, but these days there's no real slow time at Disney. You can find times when it's not as busy, but there's never a time when it's like dead. The beginning of Dec is a pretty good time to go, as is the week after Labor Day. There's a good sweet spot in January too if you can time it between the marathons and cheer tournaments. But a good rule of thumb is that if school's out, Disney is packed.
