I woke up to discover you've been having this unproductive little self-indulgent whirlwind of an argument in at least two PYF threads, which is two too many.

Knock off the political semantics poo poo in here.

Doctor Spaceman posted:

It's a pretty natural thing to want to discuss.

That's absolutely true, but a thread that slips into political discussion can very quickly become consumed only by political discussion, which is not what this thread is for. Can you have unpopular political opinions? Oh, lord, yes. Should you post about them in this thread? That doesn't tend to go so well, for anyone.

My unpopular opinion, which I guess isn't all that unpopular going by the past few posts, is that I don't like or really care about Discord. I follow a lot of threads here, lurk in a couple of other places, and have a barely-used Twitter account that are mostly for following funny/interesting things. That's more than enough to keep up with without plugging one or more neverending cocktail parties into my already fraught headspace.

I grew up adoring the Straight Dope paperbacks and column (when I could find it) but those forums have always, even way back, seemed sort of, well, stuffy to me. Couldn't tell you why.

ime discord is more used a replacement for IRC and the old messaging services like AIM and MSN. i don't think there's anything else that really maps to the structure/relative permanence of forums; even Reddit is pretty transient in that you generally don't see comments on a post more than two days or so after the post is made with some exceptions.

Forums will make a comeback in the future but it will be strange and weird and marketed at folks.

Discord got popular among gamers as a replacement for Ventrilo bc you didn't need your own server for it I thought.

I don't understand how people sit to think things through. You have to get the blood pumping to get the thoughts out of your rear end.

My experience is that Discord is like IRC only much much worse so that young people who are experienced with and want bad ways of communicating (like Twitter and any World Wide Web forum) will use it. Jefferery move the forums to BBBS TIA so we can finally have actual threads the way they're supposed to work.

I support mechanical wombs as long as they still require a human host. A sort of mechanical spider that hunts someone down and latches on and draws energy from the host to grow a child in it's bulbous gestation tank

I’ve wanted to do the treadmill gaming setup for ages, I think it’s going to be my next weird project when I have time again. I tried to do it with an exercise bike but that didn’t really work.

My Neighbor Totoro is a crap movie. The two little girls are largely obnoxious (the little one is incessantly insufferable and the movie could have redeemed itself if she stayed drowned). It’s a fine kids movie but I have to wonder about the adults who tag it as their favorite Miyazaki movie. Bland, dull, meandering, saccharine.

Chairs are essential for hung-over working. Also a standing desk makes the person opposite you in the cubicle row look at your rear end all day in the monitor reflection.

If your job is mind numbing you should sit, but stand up at regular intervals to keep your brain active. And get a toned rear end to please your co workers.

I agree that Totoro is an annoying movie. All of the scenes that the big man himself is not in are grating.

I believe that Platystemon and 3D Megadoodoo are alluding to the fact that IRC is a protocol, not a specific app like Discord. You could connect to an IRC server with any program that supported it, of which mIRC was one example - but even the basic Telnet program that came with your operating system would do the job.

The IRC server is running the IRC program. The various IRC clients are different programs.

An IRCd, short for Internet Relay Chat daemon, is server software that implements the IRC protocol, enabling people to talk to each other via the Internet (exchanging textual messages in real time).
