Wow a larper brought some zip ties, if that's all it takes to make an attempted coup than half a dozen larpers with red banners and rifles over the summer at CHAZ or whatever is practically the second coming of the Bolsheviks

Nah it was hilarious, and a stunning demonstration of the weakness of the state/just how hosed this country is. But it's not a coup, that implies some directed effort to seize power and exercise it, not just sorta wandering aimlessly though the hallways that the cops allow you to and then going home at 8PM to catch the bus back to Michigan.

Yesterday was a crossing the Rubicon moment, but it wasn't the death of the Republic. That comes later, after some more flailing.

Mantis42

It was a protest that evolved into a halfassed coup attempt (they would call it a revolution) but it's not a more serious sign of America's decline than Trump being elected in the first place. It's also funny.

I think we just have a different definition of what's needed for a coup to be a coup. Call it whatever it was it was hilarious and another notch in the Hegelian spiral of the american empire down the toilet

If this happened in another country the US media might describe it as a coup because they love calling everything coups but lol I sure as hell wouldn't, my definition of coup is rooted in big brain materialism not "Webster's Dictionary defines the word 'coup' as..."

Their plan was
1. Stop Congress from certifying the EV's
2. Just kinda wander around
3. ???
4. America is saved, everyone can go home before 8 PM
5. Congress comes back and finished certifying the EV's

That's not a coup that's a Facebook meetup

If I'm trying to kill someone by feeding them packing peanuts because I heard they have a peanut allergy, but I'm too loving stupid to understand that that won't work, that's still attempted murder

The rally was specifically about their belief that the election was stolen and that Trump deserved to be president. Them breaking into the capitol building and sort of attempting to occupy it was done with the misguided belief that this would somehow make Trump be president for another 4 years. Whether that counts as an attempted coup or not is arguable, but them being stupid as poo poo doesn't make it less of an attempt

I think it's bad, in the general sense, when the state does any sort of violence to its citizens, and I also think it's a shame that a lady was shot to death but the actual incident of her getting shot was in a lot of ways the touch of the fence or the lemming's cliff or what have you.
The tragedy is that what would otherwise might have been a happy woman with friends and loved ones was twisted into one of these unhinged weirdoes wandering through the capital building because our institutions are concerned with shuffling the maximum amount of wealth from the bottom to the top, and if that's helped (or at least not harmed) by letting people think that history's dumbest president wants us to storm the national mall so we can find nancy pelosi's baby thresher, so be it. That's what killed her, really.

At some point, even if that point is different for BLM protestors and for maga chuds, you're going to bump up against the state and they're going to hurt or kill you for it. In any case it's a cruelty of the state, but if the cops murder someone marching for BLM etc. that's a different kind of injustice, the state killing someone for doing something that is morally, ethically, spiritually etc. etc. in the right and working to suppress the people's demand for something that is good and true (such as not wanting to be murdered by cops). There's no similar component there with the maga lady, who was just pushed far enough by her wacko beliefs that she got killed in a way that she probably never expected. The cancer of her racist, reactionary, conspiratorial belief system finally killed the host.

just for comparison, nato types are freaking out over it because they think donald trump literally orchestrated this to stay in power lol

quote:

"The defeated president gives a speech to a group of supporters where he tells them he was robbed of the election, denounces his own administration's members and party as traitors, and tells his supporters to storm the building where the voting is being held," said the NATO intelligence official. "The supporters, many dressed in military attire and waving revolutionary style flags, then storm the building where the federal law enforcement agencies controlled by the current president do not establish a security cordon and the protesters quickly overwhelm the last line of police."

"The president then makes a public statement to the supporters attacking the Capitol that he loves them but doesn't really tell them to stop," the official said. "Today I am briefing my government that we believe with a reasonable level of certainty that Donald Trump attempted a coup that failed when the system did not buckle."

"I can't believe this happened."

just because it's as incompetent as everything else associated with this presidency and its supporters doesn't mean it wasn't an attempt to overturn the results of a democratic election

it is obvious that hyperbole about yesterday will be used to strengthen the police and surveillance state and also justify brutal crackdowns on any further Abolish ICE or BlackLivesMatters protests.

so next time someone tries to stop an ICE van it will be called sedition and insurrection or next time workers try to conduct a sit-in in a capitol building it will be called an attempted coup.
