i bought myself a synology nas thingy but when i went to the goon thread about nas'es it's just 9000 pages of linux and how you need to have an entire datacentre in your house

It was just some ASUS thing (AX-3000 I think). I had TP-Link before and it was alright but changing settings sucked. It’s $120 so it’s worth a gamble I guess 🤷🏼♂️

Honestly the synology NAS is worth the cash, what model did you get? I just set mine up and ran it and it was pretty easy out of the box. And I’m developmentally challenged with computers

DS220+ although part of me thinks that I should've bought the next 2 bay model up which was slightly beefier and you could use SSD's to cache stuff for moar fast I'm pretty happy with it, although it took like a day to do some sort of drive check thingy

The drive check is slow as molasses. I finally threw a fourth drive in mine and it took a day to get everything up and running. FWIW I don’t think SSD cache stuff really is worth it unless you intend to do VM stuff. I can have the torrent stuff going in the background and multiple places pulling the same 4K video and my 4 bay one keeps up fine.

I’m researching how to get a windows 10 VM working and once I do that poo poo I think it’s gold. I can’t get the openVPN poo poo working rn but I’m pretty sure that’s down to me using link aggregation and the router not supporting it. Might upgrade the wifi 6 router. But ya time machine works pretty seemlessly with Synology which was a bit of a suprise to me.

Any smb compatible network share should work with time machine tbh, iirc you can plug a USB disk into your router and it should be compatible

I like how I bought a synology NAS and got it running perfectly, hell even got a VM running on it so I no longer need a windows PC anymore whatsoever and I’m the technically inept one because Microsoft refuses to shift away from NTFS lmao.

Def gonna trade my current MBP for the 2nd generation AS MBP tho

I’ve got the AS MBP and I’m stupidly happy with it. I thought the Intel compatibility would suck until everything transitioned over but even running Rosetta 2 it’s pretty seamless.
