When I was in middle school I took part in an overnight science program. We were tasked with conducting a census of various species in the area surrounding our school. We were told it was important but given the data was gathered by unsupervised kids I doubt it was actually used for anything. I'm pretty sure the whole program was just a way to get some kids more interested in science careers.

Anyways, that's what I always imagine the Pokemon games to be now.
