Declan MacManus posted:yeah urasawa is criminally underappreciated in the us, probably because the only work of his that got adapted into anime was monster and that got fuckin buried Yeah it's super loving weird, Monster is something that at first glance could have mainstream appeal ala Bebop but I guess an animated drama without mechs or super powers is a hard sell I also have no desire to watch One Piece because I can't stand the art style and lmao I'm not watching 10,000 loving episodes or whatever, holy poo poo Larry Parrish posted:theres like 4 animes i actually like because the first ones i saw was cowboy bebop, kiki's delivery service, my neighbor totoro, and stand alone complex lol. the standard for me is set so insanely high that 99% of the genre is basically unwatchable. well, and dbz, but i knew it was stupid as a kid; i basically thought of it as animated power rangers, which also sucked really bad but was cool regardless. Honestly, I'm the same way most of the time, although as I say that I'm glancing at my shelf and I see Blu-rays/DVDs for: -Cowboy Bebop (move and TV series) -Fist of the North Star (movie and TV series, thank god for SDBD discs, entire series on three fuckin discs) -DBZ Kai -Akira -Patlabor 2 -Vampire Hunter D (w/ Bloodlust) -Berserk DBZ is still good and entertaining as gently caress, especially with Kai cutting out the filler and the great dub job, I will stand by that easily gay_crimes posted:Naoki Urasawa's Monster owns and it sucks that it isn't available anywhere aside from randomly being available on youtube the last time I checked Yeah, and it's even more loving stupid that you can get the entire series with the dub and all but only in Australia, Viz put out a single DVD release and decided welp not worth it, and had it on Prime/Netflix for a short amount of time before just taking it down from everywhere, why the gently caress wouldn't you at least keep it up for digital purchase Sucks even more that HBO passed on Guillermo del Toro's proposed adaptaion of it too, which is another thing for me, I'm not sure how you look at that series treatment, see a guy like del Toro behind it and go "nah son" given the costs couldn't have been too high to produce it either (no CGI, no extravagant setpieces, etc) Another weird thing is the differences in the soundtrack and I'm wondering if someone here can answer - the music for the dub had to be rearranged and moved around due to some licensing issues IIRC, so the original Japanese track and the English track have two different soundtracks Thing is, the version that I got a while back has both and while they are indeed different, the soundtrack of the english dub mirrors the japanese soundtrack that was up on Netflix roughly a decade ago (if that makes sense). The Japanese language track on these rips, however, is completely different, and honestly nowhere near as good and tracks sound out of place which I'm aware is dumb because that's the original but eh For instance, the song that plays in ep 19 when Dr. Gillen goes into the basement and has the realization about the boy in the photo (some spoilers here) during the dub is something I'm 90% sure I I heard when I watched it on Netflix with subs wayyyy back when https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAP0uMU1qxI&t=741s But in the subbed version that's online and everywhere else it's silence until a different song plays later in the scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqHvT4kAGTQ&t=740s What in the gently caress is this discrepancy lol, did the official Viz release change the soundtrack for both language tracks when it was officially available and all the other Japanese tracks taken from the original release? Apparently it's sacrilegious among the fans, but honestly, I prefer what I first heard in the dub and that first video much of the time Good soup! has issued a correction as of 15:32 on Jan 12, 2021 |

i think the big thing working against monster now that i think about it is that it’s over 70 episodes long and isn’t a shonen battle anime where you can get hooked just catching ten minutes or whatever at 4 am, and it doesn’t have satoshi kon’s aesthetic (it’s totally worth watching if you haven’t; the pacing tends to drag for the first ten episodes but it’s really good i swear)

# ? Jan 12, 2021 15:43 |

yeahhhhh that's a good point, it takes at least 4-5 episodes for the actual hook of the series to even begin to kick in, I forgot about that that's probably my only complaint with the series as a whole, but at least it's not FOTNS where you can effectively skip about 75% of that first arc because those filler episodes are loving dire. still salty about the dub ending right when the series begins to hit its stride with the three brothers e: also yeah, highly recommended if anyone hasn't seen it yet, Monster is one of those "Anime for People Who Wouldn't Like Anime" things where a few close friends who can't stand the thought of this poo poo have binged the entire thing and that soundtrack is loving stellar, to the point that I'd be disappointed if a few of the tracks/motifs weren't used for the proposed live-action version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2WEZngxDFQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrBSNa4ezzU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq_nK6KwK_A Good soup! has issued a correction as of 15:57 on Jan 12, 2021 |

Judge Dredd Scott posted:the original ghost in the shell movie (pls dont watch 2.0 it adds horribly ugly cgi), The CGI I can live with, the real crime is redoing all of the SFX. Like, I get why they did it, they wanted to replace the dated 80's anime sounding shooting and explosions with a more modern/western aesthetic so they got a skilled dude from Lucasfilm to do it, but it ends up ruining some of truly amazing interactions between industrial noises and Kenji Kawai's soundtrack. I would argue that the whine of the tanks legs moving in harmony with the strings during the tank scene is integral to the scene and they just ripped that out. a lot of the hype for klk was about studio trigger themselves. the best animation talent from Gainax had jumped ship and formed their own studio and were now making their first full-length anime. the show itself had a lot of ups and downs. it did have some genuinely awesome and impressive fights and a few episodes in particular were absolutely hilarious. the opening scene made a great first impression of the kind of absurd high-concept slap-schtick. in a lot of ways it was an amazing technical and creative showcase for a new studio. but there's the obvious elephant in the room that the skeevy aesthetic can be very off-putting and is basically impossible to ignore. you couldn't tell whether it wanted to mock fanservice anime or was just genuinely presenting itself as a fanservice anime. and I remember it kinda losing me a lot in the second half as it leaned into being more self-serious and edgy. Which is why I recommend just watching Promare instead because it's basically a perfection of KLK's formula, with the spectacle elevated to greater heights and none of the awkwardness.

Monster has been under my radar forever, I guess. I’ll put it on the list. if you have some free time and subbed to HIDIVE for the Legend of Galactic Heroes it’s worthwhile to watch their seemingly almost complete catalogue of VOTOMS stuff before you cancel— not all of it is amazing, but it’s interesting mecha content what are the good series currently airing? from last season I intend to watch Noblesse and uh ... Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle, having only really finished Akudama Drive really recently I’m watching Attack on Titan and the new Higurashi right now as they come out re: Zero is starting back up I know, Beastars will probably be good, but what else is there?

Dr. Killjoy posted:harem anime was absolute mathematic innovation To Love Ru is the high point because the girl the main character actually wants to be with is based off the creators ex wife who dragged him through an extremely messy divorce where she claimed ownership of the character. This turns the dynamic of the show into two end games: 1 the unremarkable main character picks the girl he wants and is doomed to the unfulfilled life of a salary man working a dead end job while never seeing his wife who will divorce him the instant he retires. And 2: he picks the girl who wants him and while it's not what he had in mind doing so grants him and the rest of the harem a life of complete freedom because he's the new king of space and now they are free of the crushing conformity of that Japanese life would have doomed them to
