I mean, I’m not opposed on principle to people spending money on me in exchange for something (I’d definitely take the time to show it off), but I think it’s like a subscription service. What are you going to do, buy me a free trial :v:?

Update 58: An Odd Ducklett

Nine months later…

Hm?

Man:… There’s a strange person standing outside the station, and I’m a bit scared to head out… Was that a person from the dojo? …Maybe I’ll pass on joining. Hey, why don’t you join instead?

:raise:

Avery's Theme - Pokémon Sword and Shield OST

You’re here to join the Master Dojo, are you not? I also train there.

… Absolutely. That is exactly what I’m here to do.

Ah, one of THOSE…

Perhaps a show of strength is the best way to get to know each other. I’ll await you outside. Once you’re ready, come out to face me. Time to show her who the better Trainer is…

… I just came here to see the pagodas. Well, I guess I’ll have something to entertain me for the rest of Easter Break.

It is, yeah.

You would no doubt like to run around and explore freely, but first, let’s make sure you can handle yourself. Naturally, as a member of the Master Dojo…

:jerkbag:

Welcome to the Isle of Armor, PokéBritain’s favorite island that uses Unovann! But before we do anything, we have to face… This guy.

Battle! (Avery) - Pokémon Sword and Shield

Yeah, he just sort of shoots a Pokéball out of his little halo thing.

I’m not bothering to include a Pokémon list because he only has two, including Abra.

This loving thing brings back bad memories. Psychic Pokémon were very rare in Gen 1 and Abra here was one of the few you could find in the wild. Problem was, pretty much the only move they knew when you caught them was Teleport, which lets the user instantly exit a fight – which meant catching them was hell on wheels because you had to get incredibly lucky just to pin them down. That or use status effects, which I didn't use much. I never actually caught an Abra, even though I wasted a hell of a lot of time trying :argh:.

Also worth noting: that level 58 there? Before you beat the Championship, all the Trainers around here have Pokémon in the 10s to 30s level-wise; afterwards; they bump their levels up to 60+. Just a little something to keep things playable. Not that any of this keeps his Abra alive longer.

Next up is his Slowpoke, or rather the Galarian pure-Psychic variation; the original version lacked the gold and also had a Water typing. There was a plot point in… I think Gen 2 where Team Rocket was harvesting Slowpoke tales to sell to gourmets, which the game portrayed as a horrible crime. Naturally, in this game Slowpoke Tails are one of the ingredients you can using curries :cripes:.

But yeah. There’s no real reason to drag this fight out. He had only has two Pokémon, for God’s sake.

Amnesia about my very existence! If only I could get rid of her… But I’ve been tasked with escorting her to the dojo… Ahem!

… My strength! Still... How shall I put this... Our dojo is a respected place, where even the famous Champion Leon trained. What I’m trying to say is, I don’t think you’re quite up to snuff…

I beg your pardon? Is there something you want to tell me?

Oh, not at all. Please, do go on :allears:.

… You’re done taking in the sights! Farewell! I doubt I’ll see you again. Avery, Teleport!

He runs off.

(You’re just letting him walk away without setting him straight? For shame, Gloria.)

(No, no, you don’t understand. It has been AGES since someone disrespected me like that! I mean, it’s nice not to have people harassing me for battles at Spikemuth, but since I’m Marnie’s girlfriend they treat me with respect and poo poo. It’s been FAR too long since I’ve had the chance to really put someone in their place. I hadn’t realized I was missing it! Oh, this is going to be FUN :allears:.)

(Now THAT is something I can respect.)

And with that, we finally gain access to –

– New inventory at the boutiques, marked with little stars! Granted, it’s not MUCH new inventory, but I suppose it’s the thought that counts. The most notable additions are recolored versions of Marnie’s outfit and…

…These hideously expensive rucksacks, good Lord. I know roughly $5000 isn’t completely wild for stuff that’s this cutting-edge fashionable, but :stonklol:.

I don’t buy it.

The Isle of Armor - Pokémon Sword and Shield OST

Anyway, the Isle of Armor. This place is a level of open I haven’t seen in a while in a Pokémon game. I mean, the Wild Area theoretically let you run around as much as you wanted, but huge chunks of it were effectively gated off by stronger wild Pokémon. Here, though, just about everything is level 60 and you can explore to your heart’s content.

For instance, I originally intended to head straight to the dojo to get the plot started, but the moment I caught sight of that Wailord island out there I went “gently caress that” and rode my waterbike over to investigate, dodging the Sharpedos that come after you like homing missiles in the waters around this part of the island. I was like, “wow, that’s a really neat geographical feature, I wonder if it’s actually like a submarine or something”, until I touched it…

… And found out it wasn’t a part of the landscape at all. But you know the most shocking part? I caught it! Even though it was half a dozen levels past my strongest Pokémon. Maybe the way Sword and Shield prevent you from capturing any Pokémon even slightly stronger than the best in your party got changed for the DLC. Granted, given what I’ve seen from Avery so far, putting this monstrosity in my team would let me cheese everything around here even more rigorously than I’ll probably end up doing, so it went straight in the box.

The island itself is crawling with Pokémon both in and out of the tall grass, all of which seem to be returnees from previous generations. The reasons behind the controversy that sparked Dexit reveal their true, loathsome face. You also have the same sort of Dens you find in the Wild Area and a host of Berry trees, all of which contain new berries unique to the Isle. And speaking of returning Pokémon…

That’s a Ditto! Ditto is the gimmickist of gimmick Pokémon; the one move it knows turns it into a copy of whatever Pokémon is facing off against, right down to the movelist and stats (though it doesn’t copy their HP and gives those moves only a little PP ()). However, that’s all it can do, and it only really shines in niche situations in competitive; nobody even considered using it in their team when I was young. Its only serious use was in breeding, since you could pair it with almost any other Pokémon, even Pokémon that theoretically couldn’t reproduce like Magnemite, and have it spit out the appropriate egg. I caught this one because I felt like it, but I doubt I’ll ever use it for anything.

As we head further in and approach a bridge near the dojo…

This guy caught a ton of these Alolan Digletts on his last trip there, but they escaped. So we agree to help him find them.

All 150 of them.

Jesus Christ, my dude, what motivated you to catch 150 of the same unremarkable Pokémon? Is this a fetish thing? It has to be, it’s not like he seems to be using them for breeding or fighting and there’s no way he could be keeping all of them as pets. From now on, we can help this guy by looking for those three little hairs sticking up out of the dirt and bring them back to him in exchange for various Alolan Pokémon. The pervert.

But enough delays. Back to the plot.

It would appear so. I’ll have you know, my offer to escort her was perfect. She rather abruptly absconded after our battle…

Well, hello? And who are you, love?

Hmm?

That I am!

… Something, you disappeared so quickly! Regardless! It gives me great joy to know that you decided to come after all!

Me too! I look forward to training with all of you.

Oh, everything is just coming up roses! Now, I’m quite sure they already told me your name, but…

It’s Gloria.

That’s right! You’re Gloria! Of course you are, love.

My name’s Honey. I help keep this place running.

Bagh! Why? For what purpose is she here?! My Future Sight must be off!

He’s training hard here at the dojo so he can become a Gym Leader someday. I can trust the two of you to get along, right?

Oh, absolutely :haw:!

Heh, it’s an honor to make your acquaintance.

Oh dear, but look at me! Here I am making you stand around outside after you’ve come all this way! Come in, come in! Don’t mind the faint stench of sweat!

If you dare breathe a word of what happened at the station to Ms. Honey…

Oh, I’m sure they are! But, well, I do believe that’s flagrantly illegal.

Only if the authorities find out. Are you willing to risk that?

I am, in fact, because I know just how far actual psychic powers go with affecting the human mind. Why, you may even be able to suppress a second-long memory or alter what color I think your stupid hat is until I notice the change!

My hat isn’t –

That is, unless you’re some kind of record-breaking psychic savant. But if you are, then what are you doing bowing and scraping here on this out-of-the-way resort island?

How about I do YOU a favor and not mention to Ms. Honey that you tried to drive away one of her students by threatening to commit a felony against her :)?

…Hmph!

One thing I am definitely jealous of Shield players for is that you get Avery here, instead of Klara (yes, you get a completely different rival here depending on which version you're playing), and I just think he's a more interesting character to spend time with (despite hitting all the same major plot beats, they're written quite differently, which is pretty neat). On the other hand, I can't say I care much for his battle music (there's something about that weird techno-drone thing that just annoys me), while Klara's is fantastic.

In general, I think the Isle of Armour characters are a lot of fun.

I also really enjoyed how open this area is, the first time I played the DLC I decided to ignore all the plot flags and just explored for ages catching things (which unfortunately made the actual content feel a bit hollow once I realised how short the actual plot is). I think this comes the closest to being actual "open world Pokemon" of all the things SwSh tried.

You're not running into issues catching higher-levelled things because that's tied to badges, not the levels of your team members, and once you get Raihan's badge you're allowed to catch anything. I love that giant Wailord though, I think this is the first time they've actually shown one at something approaching the "proper" size (though it's then disappointing it of course doesn't look like that in battle or if you set it to follow you around). It's kind of weird, too - I think once you battle it, it won't respawn, except I've started noticing it around again after the second DLC came out; I'm not sure if it just reappears periodically, the second DLC reset the flags, or something in between.

The Diglett hunt is something I found absolutely infuriating, because I have issues with completionism and therefore couldn't not get them all. The rewards are actually decent (you get various Alolan pokemon that have their hidden abilities, including eventually one of the Alola starters which are available nowhere else), and thankfully you don't need to get every diglett to get the things you probably want (the reward for finding them all is... a diglett, though admittedly it's guaranteed to have perfect stats). The game is fairly kind here, in that it actually keeps track of how many remain in each region separately and will inform you of that each time you find a diglett (and also on a sign next to the diglett man in case you forget), but it's still really annoying, especially when you've gotten most but not all in a given area. (Serebii fairly quickly got screenshots of all the locations, which helps a lot, but if you're not sure which one you missed it's still a huge pain.) And some of them are hidden very well, with the hairs blending in with grass or flowers, etc.

Since my copy of Sword came with the DLC already there, I stumbled into the areas as soon as the train station let me, looked around, and left.

I had no idea that each game had a seperate rival for Armor, but so far, I like Klara more. Her design doesn't look nearly as bad.

So, regarding that Wailord? No one can figure out what the hell its deal is. Some people who beat or caught that thing day 1 of the DLC have never seen it come back, others have. And no one can figure out what the trigger is or may be.

For all we know, it could be pure RNG.

Avery is everything Bede wished he could be and never stops being hilarious :allears: I also really like Honey. And most of the other main NPCs we haven't met from both here and the Crown Tundra (with one exception we won't be seeing for a long time yet).

Klara sounds incredibly irritating from what I've heard, she's apparently just a tsundere stereotype and that's a character I've always hated.

I like that you're framing this as Gloria on vacation too, there isn't a huge amount of content here but it sure is a fun place to come and roam around and goof off.

Lightning round time! I didn't realize you got a chance at a couple Kanto starters partway through the DLC, but here we are. In the next couple hours, tell me whether I should choose Bulbasaur or Squirtle! I'll happily show off either one though the Bulbasaur will probably see more use in the long run. If you have a preference, then choose that one. Do keep in mind, though, that whichever one you don't pick will be part of Honey's team if/when you choose to fight her, if that affects your choices at all.

Also, speaking of Kanto starters, you can also get a Charmander, if you go back to Postwick and check out Leon's bedroom.

Please welcome Gloria! I’m sure you’ll all have lots to teach her.

All our students are so good and hardworking. Everyone really gives it their all around here.

He’s so good with his hands, always making something new. Such a clever boy. And that handsome gent in the back is my darling hubby and the very master of the Master Dojo!

Heh heh, I see you’ve got a sense of humor, too! Good, good!

Don’t let him fool you into thinking he’s just a silly old man. He’s a real beast when he gets serious.

:hai:

Well, darling, I’ll leave the rest up to you!

We get the opportunity to talk to the students milling around here before the fight; as a whole, they seem nice and accepting enough, but they don’t have anything wildly interesting to say.

Battle! (Mustard) - Pokémon Sword and Shield OST

This is another dirt-simple introductory battle; he has two Pokémon, a Mienfoo and a Shinx, neither of which have anything notable about them.

They both have exactly one level on Avery’s Pokémon. I don’t even have any decades-old complaints to break out here .

The only reason to drag out the description of this fight is to cram in pictures of all his expressions.

Mustard's Theme - Pokémon Sword and Shield OST

The crowd murmurs in obligatory amazement.

.. Then you’re welcome to train here, Champion!

Wait, what?

And it will be an honor to receive your training, Master Mustard. I must admit, if I’d known you were accepting students, I would have dropped by a couple summers ago.

Not that you needed my training to win the Champion Cup!

WHAT?!

Still. Leon used to talk all about the only Champion to hold the title longer than him… I hope with your help I can exceed you both one day.

That’s the spirit!
I think we can all help each other become stronger! I’m happy you’ve come to join us! So on that note, here’s your Dojo Uniform!

...

Trying not to fixate on not being able to wear a tam o’ shanter…

Now then! With Gloria here now, the dojo’s at max capacity!

… Of this dojo!

The crowd murmurs in obligatory greed.

Heh heh, that’s the spirit! Now, lemme explain the first trial…

I daresay it’s unfair for only that child to get a uniform. Unequal, even! I demand an item swap!

I’m 20. And did you really just ask for my clothes?

Uh –

Oh dear. Do you really not have a uniform? My bad, my bad! That’s easy to fix, though! I have another uniform right here for you, Avery!

Wait, why DON’T you have a uniform yet? Haven’t been here for a while?

It was… Torn up recently. Perils of living in a dojo, I’m afraid. But I have a new one for you right –

Something flashes by the screen, snatching it out of Avery’s hands.

Student: That speed... Was it really these Slowpoke?

Other Student: I’ve never seen any Slowpoke move so fast!

How dare you? Are you using Trick?! Return my Dojo Uniform immediately!

This is the first trial, my students…

The crowd murmurs in obligatory reluctance.

Everyone dashes out of the room. With that, the game lets us out on our own again. But instead of, you know, actually following the plot, we go right.

Cripes, it powered down…

He goes over and sits at his computer.

Oh, you’re interested?

Though it doesn’t do a thing right now, since it’s out of power.

Can you just… Plug it in?

No, you can’t just plug it in! It’s a power hog, if I plugged it in I’d run the risk of shorting out what little electrical grid this island has! No, I need Watts to get it running properly – battery-powered, essentially, though standard battery power won’t cut it, I need the sort of steady Galar radiation you get when you use Watts, but…

How much do you need?

All it would take is a measly 500 W to get the Cram-o-matic up and running, y’know? But Mummy won’t give me any more of hers. It’d take me ages outdoors to collect 500 W… And the outdoors and me… Well… let’s just say, our systems aren’t compatible.

Too much going on all at once?

Yeah, exactly! Nobody gets that.

500, right? Here.

Whoa! Seriously?! You’ll give me the 500 W I need?

Can you show me what it does?

Obviously! Okay, there should be a screwdriver on the upper middle part of my desk, pass it to me…

The Cram-o-matic here is half crafting system, half Star Trek replicator. If you missed an item, used yours poorly, or just want another one, if you know the right combination of random junk, you can cram it all into this machine and it’ll spit out what you want. If you know what you’re doing or have access to the Bulbapedia page, you can get everything from TMs to evolution items to holdable items out of it. You can also combine Apricorns (new Berries that come in colors and only show up on this island) to get various Pokéballs. I’m not going to be exploring it on screen because it just isn’t interesting to look at.

But rest assured I used it to pop out a few items. For… Reasons.

Anyway, we have a trial to complete.

Each Slowpoke follows a fixed circuit in one part of this area. They run too fast for you to catch up with them without using the boost on your bike, and that just puts you at risk of slamming into a wild Pokémon and resetting the circuit; you’re better off paying attention to their pattern and intercepting them.

They aren’t anything special in combat, just generic level 60 Pokémon – outside the fact that they have skyhigh Speed, of course. Once you find them, all you have to do is beat them up.

After you do, you get a piece or two of Avery’s uniform. Beat all three and you get the full complement. While I’m here, I take the opportunity to do a little cruising around and exploring…

… Including running into an odd outlying building.

Would you let me in if I was a tourist?

Guard: Yes.

… gently caress!

Everybody else shuffles in.

What, do you think I was gonna hold it for ransom?

…Hmph! You have my thanks.

Well mustered, Gloria! You cleared the first trial like it was nothing! Why, I think this is the first time since Leon that someone was able to handle all three fast Slowpoke on their own!

:smugdog:

The rest of you tried very hard, too! You were able to catch up to the Slowpoke, but I guess you couldn’t defeat them.

He turns to face the rest of the students.

Tell you what. Anyone who was able to catch up to a Slowpoke at least once gets a pass! Gloria really outdid herself, so it’s only fair everyone else gets another chance. Try to make a comeback, everybody!

:raise:

These are our sweet little Pokémon, Bulbasaur and Squirtle. We’ve all been taking care of them together. And I’d say they’re more than a little curious about your strength as a Trainer.

Hey, it’s a couple of Kanto starters! The other one, Charmander (another Pokémon the dictation software recognizes), was probably the most popular, largely because Gen 1 didn’t have any fire types easily available until like the seventh gym. Squirtle was… Pretty solid, and as the Pokémon Glitch Exhibition LP puts it, no self-respecting Trainer ever chooses a grass starter.

Did you miss a screenshot to show what Hyde actually gives you? (Hooray, it's the item I hate most in the game! See, the thing is, I really enjoy the difficulty level the Isle of Armour has if you come here as soon as possible on a fresh playthrough, it's honestly very well tuned... but if you do that, you have to get this thing and then be absurdly overlevelled for the rest of the entire game. Couldn't they at least have put an off switch on the drat thing?)

The Cram-o-matic is an interesting idea, but it's incredibly annoying to actually use (and I'd love to know how bulbapedia and serebii figured out how the formulae work, the system is really bizarre). It's worth it though, you can make some really nice stuff that's otherwise a pain to get (e.g. Ability Capsules) on the cheap.

Also, getting anything actually worthwhile from the apricorns is incredibly rare. This is how you get duplicates of the special balls Ball Guy was handing out, but they're each a 1% chance from a specific colour of apricorns. And then there's Safari Balls and Sport Balls, which are nearly useless (aside from the novelty factor, this is the first time those have been available for general use) but have a 0.1% chance to come out. Hooray?

I don't know why, but I love absolutely everything about the fast Slowpokes. It's ridiculous, but it's great (and it's a nice touch that they're fast in battle too; I don't know what their speed actually is, but it's much higher than a slowpoke can legitimately have).

I named my Bulbasaur Leatas. (I use a lot of Google Translate Welsh and Scots Gaelic for my pokemon)

Mustard has the best expressions.

I believe the Fastpokes just have their speed at +6 in battle, because even perfect IVs and full speed EVs wouldn't give a Slowpoke much of a boost.

e: Also, you have an instance of "squirrel" instead of Squirtle.

Update 60: H-how Cheeky

And so we have our second starter. But these Pokémon have a secret: once they hit their final evolution they can Gigantamax, the first Pokémon I’ve owned that can do so.

And then there’s Gigantamaxing, a very special way of Dynamaxing for very special Pokémon… Speaking of Gigantamax, there’s that secret recipe of the Master Dojo! Drinking it makes you gigantic and strong! I call it Max Soup! I’d love to have a bowl of Max Soup full of Max Mushrooms right about now. It sure has been a while…

Max Mushrooms are the key to Gigantamaxing, and I’m tasking you with finding three!

And there we have it. As we head out, Mustard runs after us to give us a quick briefing on how and where to find Mushrooms, telling us they mostly grow in one nearby forest area – but for this trial we’ll only be able to find them in a distant cave. A VERY distant cave, like on the other side of the island. As we work our way through the island…

… We encounter some very strange Pokémon as we go. We win this fight.

Bulbasaur goes up 20 levels and evolves in the aftermath. The exp charm is POTENT.

Also, we find my single favorite Pokémon from when I was a kid once we approached the cave entrance. I don’t know WHY I liked it so much; I think it was the design, especially the scythe blades. I’ve always had a weakness for long bladed weapons. It didn’t matter that it was difficult to find and not that great; I just thought it looked cool.

It was one of the first Pokémon to get a new evolved form in Gen 2: give it a certain item, level it up after a certain level, and you get a brand-new Pokémon with added Steel-type. Which is all well and good, but Scizor was loving awful: garish red color scheme, a Type I didn’t sign up for, and the blades were replaced with pincers. Pincers! We already HAD Pokémon with pincers, they didn’t have to take one of the coolest Pokémon in the game and incentivize you to get rid of its coolest feature. Gen 2 :arghfist::(

But anyway, soon enough we find the cave in question and run into some of the largest and most unlikely-looking mushrooms I’ve ever seen.

PLEASE let these mushrooms not actually be hallucinogens… Hmm?

Wait just one moment!

My psychic powers picked up on these Max Mushrooms eons before you found them. I believe I should be the one to get those Max Mushrooms. First come, first served, and all!

No.

If you gave me a reason, I’d probably ignore it.

You infuriate me.
I find your presence most disturbing! You show up at the dojo unannounced and go on to show such talent, even though you’re still so young…

How old even are you? 25? Also, you want me to give these mushrooms up based on SENIORITY? What makes you think you’re even remotely worth me giving you a handout?

How dare you?! I worked drat hard to make myself the star student of this dojo! I’ve been here for YEARS! And you wander in and make a fool of me! Repeatedly!

“drat hard”? All I’ve seen is you fail to complete tasks and try to intimidate me into not competing. Or is THAT how you gained your position, just cheating egregiously –

ENOUGH!

Battle! Avery [8-bit; VRC6] - Pokémon Sword and Shield

:cripes:

Another unremarkable battle; his Pokémon are now a couple levels higher, his Abra has evolved, and he’s added a Woobat to his team. That’s all. His Pokémon each only know two moves :negative:. Plenty of wonderful screenshots to be had, though.

(It missed )

(This is how he responds when I get a super-effective hit in on it.)

Maybe he would’ve been more intimidating if I’d come here early, but as it is this fight is solidified :geno:. I promise I’ll be more in depth in the next fight.

Mate, what is your problem? I’m not going to judge you more than I already have, go ahead and lay it on me. I know it’s more than just an inferiority complex.

Well, CHAMPION, tell me: how much of YOUR family considers you to be subhuman?

Most of it. Enough that they kicked me mum out because she wouldn’t give up her small autistic child, exiled us from the Crown Tundra, and set me along the path that would culminate with me attempting suicide at 12.

Weren’t expecting that, were you? :sigh: Look, tell me what’s going on and I can help you.

I don’t need your bloody help!
Avery, Teleport!

:sigh:

(Now THERE is the woman I’m familiar with.)

(Taking the piss out of him was fun at first, but the sheen wore off pretty quick. Now, I just wish he’d stop bothering me and go his own thing, let me be smug at him in peace.)

(You’re getting soft in your old age.)

(You’re one to talk!)

All my other students ended up getting lost in the forest… Turns out finding Max Mushrooms was the least of their problems!

:smugdog:

Well, first things first—a proper meal! Let’s have the Max Mushrooms made into a delicious Max Soup, shall we?

Mmm, mmm, mmm! I’ve really outdone myself this time! Now all that’s left to add are those lovely Max Mushrooms you’ve brought us –

Wait!

Why, Avery! What in the world has gotten into you! I’ve never seen you in such a flutter…

Master, Ms. Honey...if you could grant me one wish, just this once, I would be indebted.

I feel that everyone here should enjoy the taste of my efforts…

Well! If that’s all you’re after... then I’m perfectly happy to oblige! Though this is hardly the first time you’ve asked for something, and I rather doubt it’ll be the last.

Ms. Honey.

I hope you don’t feel that your thunder’s being stolen, Gloria… But we’re a family here, and families share! So... we’ll go ahead and use Avery’s mushrooms today!

:smug:

It’s just so rare for him to try hard at something. I really want to reward that. You understand, don’t you?

:smugjones:

Yeah, I don’t mind. Nice work, Avery :).

Don’t condescend to me.

I was being sincere :(.

(You were being awkward.)

(Oh, and what would YOU do?)

(Not seem to immediately change postures, just to start...)

You see, when one drinks this dojo’s famous Max Soup…

:haw:

:sigh:

But! Things are a bit different when certain Pokémon drink the soup! You see, there are some Pokémon that have distinct potential… and when they drink the soup, their Dynamax form will change into a Gigantamax form!

:yosnice:

Now then, let’s wrap things up! You all did your best on the second trial, and I’m proud of everyone here! And last but not least…

We will soon enough, but there’s something we have to do first. See, while we may have eaten Avery’s Max Soup, we still have three Max Mushrooms that we can give to one of the students hanging around in the kitchen – and if we do, they’ll give us an item that lets us turn on (or off) the Gigantamax factor of any eligible Pokémon. They even have a book on a nearby shelf that gives you a full eligibility list! Before we progress the plot, I take a cruise around the island…

… Finding something truly baffling along the way…

… Before I get the opportunity to show off Bruce’s fourth and final form. Cinderace is one of several Pokémon (including the other Galar starters) to get a new Gigantamax form with the DLC, and by using the soup I got from those mushrooms, I was able to activate it for him. This form replaces all of Bruce’s Fire-type moves with G-Max Fireball, a move as powerful as anything he could have fielded before while letting him drain PP from his weaker Fire moves. Also, it looks like this:

:hellyeah: The reason it looks so washed out is because the attack animation was painfully bright; the game must have automatically toned it down when taking the screenshots.

But we have more to do.

You two are the only ones who successfully finished the second trial! You’ve pushed each other to greater heights and helped each other grow.

The rules are simple. Whoever wins will complete the trial! The winner will be granted the secret armor of the dojo!

I must make for the Battle Court, posthaste! I must meditate on my upcoming victory! A good day to you, then. I’ll be on my way. Feel free to take it easy like a Slowpoke, and take all the time you need to get ready!

He’s never felt the need to try hard at anything, I guess. Even with his training here at the dojo, I can tell he’s been doing just the bare minimum.

Less than that, as far as I can tell. He is kind of a pain in everyone’s –

Do NOT insult Avery.

:raise:

Avery helps me all the time! I thought you were a good person…

I’d ask you not to judge him that quickly – or put down one of your fellow students, for that matter!

He’s right, you know!

Okay, okay. I apologize, and I will do better in the future.

Good :colbert:.

That said…
Even with his training here at the dojo, I can tell he’s been doing just the bare minimum.

Maybe you’ve helped awaken some sort of passion and drive in him, eh?

Fun fact #1: the Galar starters' G-Max moves have a base power of 160 regardless of what move you turn into them, unlike every other Max move or G-Max move, which have variable power depending on the underlying move. (They'll still be physical or special depending on the underlying move.)

Fun fact #2: Scyther and Scizor have the same BST of 500 (base stat total, if you add up all their stats), just different distributions. Most pokemon have a net gain of stats when they evolve, but not this one. I tend to think of it as more like a branching evolution line (like Slowbro vs Slowking) than a normal evolution. (I guess technically you can still use an Eviolite on Scyther, but it's not really built to take advantage of it.)

I love how :effort: all of Mustard's "trials" are, it's so clear he's just making the entire thing up as he goes along.

This upcoming fight with Avery (or Klara) is probably my favourite in the entire game, though it's better if you do it at the earliest possible opportunity (i.e. come here and do the Isle ASAP before even fighting Milo), I think the level of challenge is perfectly tuned to be interesting at that point. It's just unfortunate that if you do this, you'll have the EXP charm and that will trivialise the rest of the game. Admittedly, I prefer the Klara version, but I'll talk more about the fight after we've actually seen it.

Here's hoping you aren't writing yourself into a corner for the Crown Tundra content, Gloria originally being from there could mess things up (or maybe it'll help, I don't know).

I did say it's literally only interesting if you come here early. The scaled-up version isn't going to be dangerous because the only thing that's been increased are the levels, they don't get new moves or anything. But if you're on par level-wise and have a team that isn't yet fully evolved, etc, it gets interesting.

(The only reason I know this is that when the DLC first came out, I did a bunch of speedruns to what I called Kubfu%. It was in high demand on the GTS in Pokemon Home and that was the easiest way to get version exclusives etc to fill out my pokedex.)

The first thing is they cheat. The reason they're going to the battlefield before you get there is to set up a trap: Avery's version is that Psychic Terrain is in effect from the start, and Klara's is two layers of Toxic Spikes on your side of the field. Psychic Terrain is less interesting, it basically just gives him 30% extra damage and makes it so you can't use priority moves. Toxic Spikes means any pokemon you use will be Badly Poisoned as soon as you send it out. There are countermeasures for these things - I learned to love the Heavy Duty Boots against Klara for instance, and I never even considered using that the rest of the time - and I like that it encourages unusual approaches. I really like this, both as a story/character integration thing, and just a twist on the battle that makes you think. Normally an NPC trying to use those kind of strategies would sacrifice so many turns setting it up that you'd win by default, but... well, not this time.

The second thing is that Galarian Slowbro is surprisingly fearsome that early in the game. Its stats are balanced around it having no speed, but its Quick Draw ability is a free built in Quick Claw (so the RNG can occasionally just tell you to get hosed), and its signature move (Shell Sidearm) automatically becomes physical or special to hit whichever of your defences is lower, which makes it really tough to switch in on, and punishes pokemon with imbalanced defences. I don't know if that physical-special switch still happens if it's dynamaxed, but I think it might? Anyway, this battle is designed to show it off and it's pretty good at it.

(I think the other thing here is that Avery's team, aside from Slowbro, still isn't fully evolved. Klara has a Galarian Weezing, which is significantly more dangerous: it's pretty bulky and early in the game you're not likely to be able to hit its weaknesses well, it's only weak to steel and psychic.)

It's probably a combination of the pokemon available early in the game limiting the direct countermeasures you have to what they bring, or being fragile due to being unevolved, etc. I'm not saying it's the hardest fight ever, but it's a fight you can lose if you're unprepared or not thinking (I definitely lost to Klara a handful of times), and that's a rare thing for me in a Pokemon game.

I'm probably talking this up more than it deserves, honestly, but that's why this fight impressed me. It's a shame it loses most of its teeth if you come here in the postgame, but so do most things (at least Mustard doesn't).

Update 61: With a One, Two, Three… This Poké Ball Will Grow Gigantic!

(Quick question before we go in.)

(Hmm?)

(Do you think Avery can detect our bond? Maybe… I dunno, mess with it? Just to make sure.)

(With psychic powers? No. The bonds my sister and I create are unrelated; they are connected to the natural energies of this land, instead. We can only form them with those who have lived here for many years… Have we not discussed this before?)

(Nope. Wait, like Galar radiation?)

(… Most likely, yes. I would venture that Galar particles are present in small amounts throughout the island and are absorbed by those who live here…)

(… Which causes them to admit trace amounts of Galar radiation, which you can then manipulate… How?)

(I do not know. It has always worked on an instinctual level. But if we bring this to Sonia and she can suss out the logic behind it -)

(Put a pin in this conversation?)

(Agreed.)

Defeating you will grant me the secret armor… Then I will at last have what I need to become a Psychic-type Gym Leader! No matter what it takes, I refuse to accept anything but a complete and utter victory...

All right, you two, take your places.

Battle! Avery - Pokemon Sword and Shield Remix

Weird Terrain is an environmental effect that boosts the power of all Psychic-type moves substantially as long as it’s active – and yes, I missed that screenshot. Avery activates it here the moment the battle begins. He should not be able to do that. It doesn’t turn out to have mattered much.

My plan for this fight is very simple. Even though his Pokémon are now level-wise competitive with mine, their teeny movelists and monotype make them a lot less of a threat than they might otherwise be. Instead of trying to counter them individually, I just Dynamax Mr. Blobby and have him smash his way through Avery’s first three Pokémon.

Three turns of Dynamax, three Pokémon down. His last Pokémon is a Slowbro.

(At no point during this animation does he actually touch the Pokéball.)

(Pictured: the only time Avery looks cool.)

It may not be worth that introduction, but it’s not exactly worth dismissing out of hand; that Poison typing is there to trip up anyone who tries to power through using neutral elemental moves (which I did when I was new to Pokémon and couldn’t remember types).

It’s not exactly a slouch on the attack, either.

But it’s just one Pokémon. For all its virtues, it’s not that much better than the rest of his team and it goes down pretty quickly. I understand the fight is FAR different if you come to it at a different part of the game:

And there you go.

The other students cheer.

Oh, well done! You both gave it your all!

It appears...I have lost.

I don’t think young, capable children like you can understand how I feel.

For crying out loud.

… You asked for my life story earlier, and I’m not prepared to give it to you. But… I am just an average man who gave everything he possibly could.

After the less-than-reputable things I did, I’m likely to be expelled from the dojo. Gloria, you are free to tell the master about the awful things I did.

What horrible things?

… I beg your pardon?

Look, it’d be one thing if I thought you weren't sorry or trying to weasel out of punishment, and I definitely wouldn’t be saying that if you were digging in. But… As long as you’re willing to actually put in the effort, I’m willing not to hold it against you. Not forgotten, by any means, but forgiven.

Wh-what are you saying? But I turned to the shadows like a Dark type to try to win!

You know when to stop.

I guess? Just… I’ve seen a disturbing amount of people burn out or turn into monsters because they pursued their goals at any cost, and I’ve known plenty of people who thought they abandoned their dreams only to find something a lot more fulfilling. You have to be sure that they're serious about it – if they’ve gone too far, you have to stop them – but it’s better to help someone flow around an obstacle than let them try to force their way through it.

Surety and flexibility in perfect balance – what an excellent approach for a martial artist!
I should apologize on Avery’s behalf, too, as his master.

… It was partly my fault as well. I let his training lapse and his attention drift. I could have found ways to challenge him at any point, and if I had, this never would’ve happened. I can only offer my apologies.

But the weight of your decisions rests on your shoulders, Avery.
As for your punishment, you’re going to look after the Pokémon in the dojo for six months...by yourself!

That certainly is a great deal of work, but… I will accomplish it with style.

It’ll take some time to prepare, so I’ll go ahead and get things sorted. And that’s all, gang! As you were!

Since you’ve completed all three trials…I give you the secret armor of the Master Dojo!

'Ullo mate, I –

I know... I know... It’s tiny... But raise it with diligence, and it’ll become strong enough to see you through any battle, just like a suit of armor. No opponent will be able to get past it!

So I was thinking, Gloria!

So take good care of Kubfu, ’K? It’s in your hands now!

Well, lad, what say we head off and get stronger together, ey?

Kubfu is ours :toot:

And now, with THAT settled, we are free to explore the island again.

And, as a reward for making it this far, we can have our Pokémon accompany us around the map! Pokémon Yellow’s legacy comes full circle. This function is mostly cosmetic, as far as I can tell:

… It lets us show off the weird Pokémon we’ve collected to NPCs that don’t care…

… And cuts out the animation at the beginning of every encounter where we throw our Pokéball out. It will also have plot relevance in just a little bit, but I decided to hold off, because next time – we get into the multiplayer.

Walking with your pokemon out increases their affinity very quickly, which is mainly why it's plot-relevant. Also, nice foreshadowing of which evolution you're going for.

Hah, I was going to comment on this too! I like how you snuck that in.

Edit: Oh, I completely forgot to mention. I think I'm in the minority on this, but I don't like the follower-pokemon mechanic in this game and disable it ASAP. This is not to say I don't like following pokemon in general; it's charming and when done well allows you to feel like you're interacting with your pokemon outside of battle, etc, there's a reason it's one of the most popular features people keep requesting they bring back. The Let's Go games did it really well. But here it's just... clunky. They don't really react, they just awkwardly follow you; the models aren't always sized appropriately and they get stuck on the geometry a lot, it's just annoying.
