Ready to crash and burn.
I never learn.
I'm on the rapetrain.
WMR is not great, but honestly if you have the hardware to run iRacing on higher settings anywhere close to G2's full resolution, it's worth it in my opinion. There is some blurrier parts of the screen around the edges but everything on track and on the speedo looks crystal clear to me, but maybe I have a good face shape for it. I wear glasses normally though so a blurry peripheral is something I've had a lifetime to get use to.

I just know I don't think I could settle for anything less clarity-wise after the past month with my G2.

Thanks for the feedback on things, especially the VR. I'll probably just buy into the Fanatec world for everything. I'll be doing 90% open wheel so I'll probably start with their *cheap formula wheel.

Oh and it's all going to be built into this old/scrap formula ford chassis

For VR, the Quest 2 and a link cable is the best bang for the buck right now. It's not as nice as the Index, but it's a third of the cost. You can also sideload stuff to do PCVR wirelessly instead of using a cable, though it's still in YMMV territory as it's not yet officially supported. PCVR works fine with an up-to-spec USB cable, though.

The downside, of course, is that it's a Facebook device and links to your Facebook account, and if that account is deactivated or banned, then you lose access to your device and any games you bought from the Quest store. Yup.

Coworker just upgraded his VR and is selling me his Rift S cheap. Should be good enough for a while and make sure I can do VR before I spend a bit more for a Quest 2 or a lot more for something else.

Headed to pick up the frame in a bit then start cutting. Will be using the old G27 to mock things up roughly and get an idea of where things will sit. Undecided if I'll mount the wheel base up front and use a steering column and adapter or if I'll put it right at the dash link normal, don't usually use many buttons but it would be nice to have the option.

The problem with the G2 is that it's hardware is fantastic, but Windows Mixed Reality software is pure loving trash.

Despite the issues though, and I could complain about them for days, VR is still absolutely worth it. Once you actually get it working in your racing sim of choice, there is no going back.

Amen. After having to wait to really use my new G2 I'm in love. It's made my lap times faster and more importantly more consistent than ever. It's fuckin great.

to each their own, I love racing with VR, being able to feel the depth is a big deal especially when doing oval races at places like Daytona where it's key to know if you're pushing or not. .
Yes strapping stuff to face is a bit crappy but I've gotten rid of my triple monitors in favor of VR, drinking while driving is hard, and key presses are rough.

Is track IR any good for iRacing? I know it’s the headset of choice for flight sims but I didn’t know if it added anything to racing games.

When I was playing on an ultrawide, yes I found it quite helpful for looking into corners in games that don't do that with your head automatically. Not as necessary as in a WW2 flight sim, but I'd feel a difference if I took it off.

What about on a regular widescreen monitor? Is it worth it at all? I don’t have one of those fancy set ups like you see on YouTube and don’t really have the space to do so, so I’m trying to figure out if I’ll be fine or if it’s worth it to get.

Since your view is even more constricted on a standard monitor, I imagine it'd be helpful too.

That said, there are head trackers that use phone cameras and poo poo. Try those before you dump a hundred bucks on TrackIR. I've not used them, so I can't be of much help on specifics.

I tried the one with the camera phone and while it's very impressive and definitely works, the latency between my head moving and the perspective moving made me ill immediately. Worked really well with MSFS 2020 though, since you don't need to rapidly look anywhere the latency isn't an issue.

I would hope that a dedicated head tracking system would have much lower latency, or maybe I just didn't set it up correctly?

yes trackIR works okay for iracing and lets you look around which is nice, but still desont' really provide the same amount of depth perception as a monitor.

Well, I sure keep spending money. Next up is hacking through the basement of tools and wood and building a custom frame that fits in my space and folds up to the wall or similar. I am probably going to re-do the layout of this whole room for better room-scale VR first. (I have a racing style chair already, don't really have room in here for a whole cockpit).

It looks to me like they might be on the verge of replacing the TH8A shifter with whatever the minor revision for the new consoles is, but the supply was getting annoyingly thin on the existing one so I grabbed it sooner than planned. I got it from B&H; I noticed amazon had none, and Newegg said they had 4 left at MSRP with some other sellers on their page listing them as high as $300 :allears:

Quest 2 link cable finally showed up so I sat down for a couple hours and tried to get a few games going. Project Cars 2 looks incredible but doesn't detect my pedals. Assetto Corsa looks and runs amazing, spent a lot of time playing this one. rFactor2 I need to read through the setup and get that working well because this is the main sim I race. iRacing runs like absolute garbage, maxed out around 13fps with everything turned all the way down.

New wheel base, wheel and pedals arrive Tuesday then we get to start making it all work together and fit the frame.

edit: iRacing runs great over HDMI, 90+ fps unless it's a massive field, with everything turned up.
