Both of my older brothers gave me book recommendations going up. One told me to read the Startide Rising and the other Altus Shrugged. I was like 12 at the time. Luckily I read a cool sci-fi story about geneticist engineered chimps and dolphins at that age instead of getting red pilled. Guess which brother voted for Bernie and which is MAGA all the way?

"including increasing $600 payments to $2000" So it sounds like they are indeed going to do $1400 checks. I don't think a single Dem was saying "$1400 checks" before today and GA wad won on promising 2k checks. This will be perceived as being a promise.

I would love to see a quote from a single dem before today explicitly saying "we will send you a $1400 check" This is going to disappoint a lot of people and look like breaking a promise to a lot of people.

I think we’re all being a little pedantic. Everyone heard stimulus checks were going out. The initial number settled upon was $600. Then Trump was like “Make it $2000!” And the Dems said “OK let’s go!” Mitch said no so only the $600 went out. The GA Dems said “I’m all for $2000.” If $1400 checks go out next month, I don’t think anyone will hold anyone as breaking any promise.

600 in december followed by 1400 in february is a longer stretch than the average person's attention span. I think there will be some grumbling but I don't expect a lot of pushback outside of Sean Hannity whining about the dumbdumb democrats lying what with their facts and logic.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the people at the Pentagon have learned how to slow-walk things by the time they got to that level. "MAJ Dickless, I need you to get with all the shops and get me a report by the end of next week on the second and third-order effects of this move."

Hopefully they realize that with as bad as Covid is getting there's really no downside to going overboard with the response so long as it finally winds the pandemic down. If they try to do the minimum and end up failing to "get us back to normal" then no one is going to remember/care how badly Trump hosed up the initial response when they're in the poll booth in 22/24.

Also, he got caught running fraudulent robocall campaigns to intimidate voters during the 2020 election season, and has been indicted on felony charges in both Ohio and Michigan. Barring a last-minute pardon, that's probably going to put him away for five to ten. (That's in addition to the felony securities fraud charges from 2019 that he's also awaiting trial for.)

German Federal government is seriously discussing (i.e. government statements have already been issued, which generally happens as an early-warning) shutting down public transportation and long-distance travel for individual states with high infection rates. Considering how hard everyone loves to nibble on the big ol' economy-Schwanz, that's actually a huge indicator of how shitlessly-scared our politicians are of the two new mutations that have found their way to Germany now. Speaking of new mutations, what's the US policy for incoming travelers? Mandatory tests are already happening, I assume, but are people tested for the UK/RSA-strain already? Because over here, only 0,5% of all administered tests check for the new mutations, and the extrapolated infection rate is pretty alarming.

facialimpediment posted:https://twitter.com/JStein_WaPo/status/1349864653380268032 Think the first priority is to just get money out and into peoples hands instead of sitting around arguing with Republicans. Its not 2k but it will get out and help. It looked like there was also a lot of other aid in that bill that would help as well I hope. If they catch poo poo for this I'm fine with it because they are trying to do the right thing and support the bottom. This is still doing exactly what they said they would do, the 1400 was tacked on to the last bill to total 2k. They have brought that 1400 and added in a bunch more. What exactly are people prioritizing, just taking a very superficial and literal interpretation of their call for 2k or passing a bill that tops up the total from the last month to 2k, adding in a bunch of other support and hopefully getting the support required to pass it? Of course it should be larger but I think holding out for more will do more damage then just getting this support out.
