On the downside to the Barker channel, I've only watched a handful of episodes (no more than five) and I've already seen one repeat between Wednesday and Friday nights.

lolin' that contestants who don't know how to play poker keep drawing Poker Game as their pricing game.

Barker: You have four 9s. Do you want to keep that or pass that hand to the house?

Contestant:

Barker: Audience, help her out. Should she pass that hand?

Audience: NO!

Contestant: Uh, I guess I'll keep it?

Barker: And the house has drawn two pair!

Contestant: :geno:

Barker: That means you win.

it's not just the variance of winning, but in just how elaborate the pieces were for the games

No kidding. Was super surprised when Pick-a-Pair rolled out and had the prizes rotating on a ferris wheel that they could stop and start on command!

And then this thing for Check-Out!

Seeing that pop up on screen gave me one of the most visceral nostalgia trips I've had in years! Took me back to sitting on the shag carpet in my grandparents' den, punching in the numbers on my Mickey Mouse calculator along with the show.

That's a weird quirk with Pluto's binge channels. It's like they start these binge channels, but they don't have all the episodes distributed to them all at once. They seem to get them in batches over time. Like when the Star Trek channel launched, it was only the first half of the first season of TNG over and over again. Now, a few months later, they have about the first half of TNG episodes in general, a couple of movies, and at least one documentary in rotation.

Asides from the old episodes mentioning the songwriter on occasion, that's just about how Bid-a-Note worked on the Kennedy/James and Lange versions.

Anyone else watch The Chase? I thought it was okay.

The host is way too slow, both with reading the questions, but also the general pace. Especially in the first round it seemed like she was explaining the rules in excruciating detail after every single question.

"Alright Bob, you said the answer was 'France'. If you're right, you'll move one step closer and be three steps ahead of Ken, and only have four questions to answer before you win $75,000. But if you're wrong, and Ken's right, then Ken will move a step closer to you, and you'll stay where you are, and have to answer five questions before Ken catches you and you leave with nothing. Oh, sorry, that was incorrect, it was Spain. That means you'll stay where you are; five questions away, and Ken still is three away from you, but he'll move one step closer if he got it right, which is two steps away. Ken, did you say Spain? You did, so you move one step closer to Bob, only two steps away. If you answer two more questions correctly that Bob answers wrong then you'll catch him and Bob will leave with nothing, but if Bob answers all his questions then he'll bank the money and move on to the final chase. Now, onto the next question, remember Bob, if you get this question right then you move one step closer to..."

The Chase has been around for a while on the Gameshow Network, where the guy you're playing against is this big fat English guy called the Beast who insults the players. It works a bit better than having someone nice like Ken.

e: Leslie Jones is alright in certain roles but she's really annoying on something like Celebrity Wheel of Fortune. You don't need to yell a comment over the top of literally every other player or whenever Pat says something, christ

I haven't watched the US chase yet, but, yeah, the UK original has a lot of the same framing patter, but it's also run through at top speed by the host. US game show hosting these days seems to be very much about talking to make a half-hour game run for an hour and also to try and increase the tension, even when games don't need to be tense at all, they need to be loose and moving quick

the---I was going to say four, but I forgot there's five now---five original chasers are all up there to be gently caress-you scary (well, maybe not paul sinha, but that's probably because I've heard his comedy shows) and also smarter than you, I don''t quite see how genial chasers make any sense

I hit up wikipedia to look at the chase's entry to see where I'd missed a chaser and I was reminded that it was one of three games that was run to replace golden balls

I wish I had a copy of a golden balls episode in hd, because the last time I went looking for an episode of it everything on youtube was a blurry mess. (update - it still is, and the majority of the uploads of it are phone-pointed-at-tv recordings)

If you're looking at it in HD, the set is one of the most fantastically gaudy sets ever created, and everything being metallic and reflective makes it a thing that you absolutely need to see at least once.

in blurry smear-o-vision, it's garbage.

similarly, one of the other replacement shows of those three was divided, which is probably the epitome of a game designed to make people miserable (including monopoly.) It's a pot-builder where you have to massively unequally divide the cash at the end between the three players, and all three players must agree. cash drains out of the pot while you argue. nobody gets out happy.

I have to say I really like the hustler.

I think The Hustler moves just a little too slow for me, but I'm liking it. Although that might just be liking Craig Ferguson too. There's an interesting mix of strategy to it and it's fun to see someone trying to adapt a social game to TV. About the only thing I wish it had a little more of was time to run down the Hustlers' strategy with a flashback. The game feels like it ends a little quick.

Main reason I'm noticing these sorts of things is that I want to build a sort of portable game show production that can be rented out for events locally, so I've been extremely detail oriented about what is and is not working on modern game shows. I already have the programming knowledge, now I'm trial and erroring my way through woodworking and electrical engineering to build prototypes like eggcrate displays, https://www.instagram.com/p/B3qfMZGhPKO/, and a Combs-era Family Feud face off podium, https://www.instagram.com/p/CDZ0PcYB9As/.

Seeing this game show resurgence over the past few years has been extremely inspiring. I'm just hoping it lasts like it did across the 70s-90s so that I have enough time to build my project and get it out there!

Goon game show project update.

Life stopped kicking me in the balls long enough to finally get started on the next phase of my project. :unsmith:

https://www.instagram.com/p/CKcgwXGB_wX/

Finished 5 "light blocks" over the weekend and whipped up a simple test animation. My idea is to build the framework of my portable game show set out of blocks like these.

I got a shipment of dark acrylic last week, so next up is using that to build a 4-character eggcrate display. That will stack on top of these blocks, flanked by its own light blocks, and then another row of blocks will go on top of that. That'll compose one "chunk" of the set. Overall, the plan is to have a projector screen set up, flanked on each side by one of these chunks, plus another chunk above the screen. It'll wind up as a rudimentary version of the Family Feud board.

And if all that somehow works, I then start working on contestant podiums for things like Jeopardy and maybe a couple of original game show concepts I've been cooking up!

I don't have the data to back it up, but crazy thing I've been noticing about COVID-era Price is Right is that the value of trips are thousands of dollars less than I remember them being. Before COVID, trips were getting way up there in price, some even 5-digits, and most wouldn't go below $8000.

Recently, I'm seeing many contestants lose pricing games by over-valuing trips. If there was a game to choose between two prices for a trip, it used to be if you chose the more expensive one you were basically guaranteed a win. I just saw someone lose a trip on Coming or Going by choosing the $7000 price rather than the $5000 price!

And now it's got me thinking about how the superconductor shortage is going to affect the price of cars coming up. Will cars starting with a 3 become the norm rather than the exception later this year? With this game show project I'm building, I pictured myself buying a cargo van to transport the set around town. I really don't want to see the prices of those shoot up. I'm spending enough on inflated plywood and plastic prices already. :ohdear:

As for this summers stuff, ABC is chugging right along with Summer Fun & Games(even if Press Your Luck now gives me Final Jeopardy vibes), Fox seems to have renewed their summer shows plus a show where bakers have to recontruct cakes while Joel McHale mocks them, while NBC has brought their slate back under the Summer Games! tagline (see what we did there :downs:) plus a new show starring Lil Rel Howery where you build minatures, and well CBS Paramount+ preview network is doing nothing in primetime. Over on cable, there's natures harmonious seven part game show, The Cube on TBS, with the usual shows somehow powering through on the Food Network.

"Pictionary" snuck in as a syndicated game show with the fat kid from Stand By Me (Jerry O'Connell) as a host.

All I can grasp is people try to sketch things but the guessers having known the answer category the guessers (a team of 2 minus the sketcher) just blurt out random answers that can fulfill the category and get the answer.

It's not very good... it's no Win, Lose Or Draw.

And Win, Lose or Draw was a very flimsy premise of a game show as it is.

Best drawing game I've seen was a little summer replacement series from 1963 called "Picture This."

Team thing. Other team picks the item to be guessed, with a picture already given. one person would be given the word, and talk the artist through drawing the thing they had to guess as they were drawing it. Best 3-outta-5 wins.

It makes more sense in action:

i wanted to mention the recent announcement by the Ashai Broadcasting Corporation that they would be cancelling not just one of the longest-running game shows in Japanese television, but also one of the only Japanese game shows to still use regular civilians for its contestants: Panel Quiz Attack 25.

4-player quiz reversi -- buzz in with the right answer, you get to make your mark on the board. Flank your opponents' marks with two of your own and you flip them to your color. Just before the end of the game, a special 'attack chance' comes up and lets the controlling player flip any spot on the board back to neutral, with the next right answer claiming the space (and any flips that may result from it).

Most territory captured gets to play the bonus game for a vacation by seeing a short video consisting of clues behind the game board - but only their territory gets removed. here's the most-recent episode i've been able to find on the 'tubes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25dtt16uMPU

From 1975 until 2011, the show was hosted by Kiyoshi Kodama. He stepped down as host in April 2011 citing illness, passing away a month later from stomach cancer. They devoted an entire episode of the show as a memorial

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYPchf52sPM

Yasuyuki Urakawa then took over as host for four years, being replaced by Shosuke Tanihara in 2015.

Ashai Broadcasting Corporation made the decision as a way to try and attract a younger demographic. 46 years on TV is a damned good run for a game show, and I thought it was worth mentioning.

i keep picturing this image of whammo constantly licensing out the slip-n-slide brand (like sandy frank has done with name that tune), but explosive diarrhea derails every development attempt.

"WE EVEN GOT IMMODIUM TO SPONSOR THIS HOW DOES IT KEEP HAPPENING?!"
