Hey friends, I could use some suggestions. Tomorrow (the 16th) is another good animated feature night, and I'm having a hard time, specifically with finding films to show by diverse directors. The field of movie directors in general is painfully white and male, but animated movies are even worse since they're more expensive, take longer, tend not to do well with awards and are a bigger box office risk (and yes I know these are intensely stupid reasons to have a near-monoculture for this medium, but we all know that's no barrier to it being the gross truth: producers just trust white men the most with their money ). So, I'm looking for a movie that is:

1-Feature length (1-3 hours)
2-Viewable on youtube in 1 part
3-Animated
4-Actually good
5-Directed by anybody other than a Caucasian dude

At present the only options I've found that check all those boxes are all Indian films, which is fine, but since we already did Sita Sings the Blues it'd be nice to not just keep hammering Hindu cosmology, which is what a LOT of the Indian animated films I'm seeing are. Thoughts?

personally, i'd enjoy watching an Indian-made movie about Hindu cosmology! i don't think it would overlap too much with sita sings the blues. SSTB is pretty obviously made from the viewpoint of a western director, so an Indian-made film might be a neat contrast

I'd also be fine taking a break from animated movies for a week, if we want to pursue good options in other genres

I understand the concerns re: anime, however I think one of Leraika's suggestions deserves at least to be considered: There are two early 80's anime films about a unicorn named Unico on youtube and they look pretty darn BYOB to me. I was even thinking a double-feature, but what do y'all think?

And of course if we're watching anime I'm gonna make y'all watch a classic Astroboy if I can at all swing it because The Mighty Atom is a guilty pleasure. Or maybe a Gigantor... but we'll see what people think about unicorns and roboboys night

I'm always down for Kurosawa but I think we can make it through a whole animated feature January if we try, and I want to try! Then maybe February might be unthemed. I know I want to do a valentine's day special and feature some films specifically for Black History Month but other than that we can watch whatever people want.

I dunno, if you're all sick of cartoons we can take a week off. I never get sick of cartoons but I'm weird.

4) and probably i eat some snacks or drink a booze or something

Can you guess the theme of tonight's extended double-feature yet? Wait for it...

We'll start (promptly a half hour before showtime!) with a collection of short films by Sally Cruikshank, including her work for Sesame Street and the Quasi shorts.

Then we're gonna watch 1930's The Tale of the Fox by Ladislas Starevich, plus maybe one of his shorts too if we have time

And then finally (because these features are both like an hour and change) we're gonna check out African Tales: Mark of Uru, from 2011.

Can you see the pattern yet? That's right! All of tonight's films are about ~~furries~~"funny animals"! Because anime is too weird, but this totally not weird at all line of thought presented itself in the alternative suggestions, LOL. Never change, goons.

And, for those who do not object to anime, I propose a THIRD movie night this coming week, that's right I'm tripling down, so we can watch The Adventures of Unico together, because I think it will be nice and actually significantly less awkward than the craziness we're watching tonight.
