We don't (as of the last time I was paying attention, which was a few years ago) actually how to quantify what causes brain damage, from a physical perspective. The direct cause is obvious: something hits the head. The medical cause is equally obvious: neurons die or just don't work as well. But what's the threshold? How do you determine WHEN a neuron dies or is damaged? There might have been, probably has been, scholarship on this since the last time I saw anything, but last I checked the most common idea was a linear strain threshold. That means when you stretch (or squish) a neuron a certain amount - from memory I think it was 15%, but I'm not certain - it's dead. Maybe. That's what everyone used for their models, anyway. You can imagine how that might not deal with rotational trauma well.
