Mr. Nice! posted:Our founding fathers were the ones that got together and decided that slaves should count as 3/5ths of a person to ensure that the smaller but more densely populated cities would not outweigh the voice of the landed gentry. This is true and anybody who tries to excuse it should be reminded that there were plenty of abolitionists back then, our founding fathers just deliberately decided that wasn't them. IMO though this is a great example of America in all its fuckedupedness and a reflection of America's original sin. I think the founding fathers should get recognition for the fact that as a community they really did live a commitment to democracy and Enlightenment era values. They're one of a tiny number of revolutionary figures internationally who tried to set up good institutions and step back from governing rather than just becoming dictators even when the American people would have been totally okay with installing Washington as President-for-Life. I think that should be recognized and celebrated while also pointing out the massive hypocrisy it involves. To me the tension between their genuine and lived commitment to these big democratic ideas paired with literally not thinking Black people (or Natives) counted as people is basically America.txt.

Lol, it started with this:The July 3rd 2020 order establishing this monstrosity posted:(i) The National Garden should be composed of statues, including statues of John Adams, Susan B. Anthony, Clara Barton, Daniel Boone, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, Henry Clay, Davy Crockett, Frederick Douglass, Amelia Earhart, Benjamin Franklin, Billy Graham, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Douglas MacArthur, Dolley Madison, James Madison, Christa McAuliffe, Audie Murphy, George S. Patton, Jr., Ronald Reagan, Jackie Robinson, Betsy Ross, Antonin Scalia, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Harriet Tubman, Booker T. Washington, George Washington, and Orville and Wilbur Wright. But now apparently it will be yuuuuge with hundreds of statues. What a loving idiot. Add it to the list for Biden to undo. Edit: This is a loving gem Today's idiotic update to the 7/3/20 EO posted:(b) The Chairperson of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Chairperson of the National Endowment for the Humanities, in consultation with the National Council on the Arts and the National Council on the Humanities, respectively, and the Task Force, should target spending one-twelfth of the discretionary funds available to their agencies on commissioning statues of individuals set forth in section 3(c)(i) of Executive Order 13934, as amended by section 3(b) of this order, for placement in the National Garden, as appropriate and consistent with applicable law. Yeah, OK, we're gunna spend 8% of the NEA and NEH's paltry budgets on this bullshit. stealie72 fucked around with this message at 19:30 on Jan 18, 2021 |

Constant foreverwars make it harder and harder to find new places to go to war with.
