I like the songs because I like 'em. And I like singing along with them. They make me happy. That's all.

And in an unprecedented event for this forum, I'm not going to try to convince you that you're defective if you don't like them too, nor defend and repost them for fifty pages. Peace be upon you.

all stan rogers wanted to colonize on was the trend of belting out fishing tunes in ones kitchen at 3 am while hammered

but yeah, i guess some of those tunes had to deal with slavery or whatever so as a way of letting you know i'm woke, here's my change.org petition to destroy all music written before the formation of the righteous brothers.

Actually, you know what? gently caress it. "whatever racist sea songs y'all are on about" has actually gotten under my skin.

How the gently caress is Wellerman racist, and how am I an "apologist" for liking it? Explain to me how a civilian working song about whaling and waiting for supplies to arrive has anything whatsoever to do with racism or colonialism.

Because those things existed at the same time? Because the authors and singers were citizens of a colonial power? If that's your reasoning, I hope you aren't into literally any music written by anyone white in the last few centuries, because I've got some bad news for you.

some people saw it and it kinda exploded the Tik Tok shanty scene and now a lot of people are having fun singing together.

not a fan of the electro remix but not knocking you if you like it.

The shanties were one of my favorite parts of Pirate Simulator 4: Black Flag :3:

Weirdly, the electro remix is oddly pretty deece!

Sugar and rum are produced via slave labour in the americas.

Ergo to desire sugar and rum is colonialism.

But I would generally agree that the theme of "we went to sea and everyone loving died because it was stupid or got trapped in some kind of endless supernatural purgatory" sort of undermines the idea. Like if your sea shanty says "actually we went and done a colonialism and it were well good" then it is a bad one, everyone should be dead, miserable, or both.

The people singing those songs were the people doing the hard labor meaning they were often wage or literal slaves which is why mutiny and piracy were so common for centuries.
