So I hate the "Emperor Flees" event with a passion, but it led to this. The Emperor fled my court last turn and returned to Dong Min's court, who's capital had now moved to Anding.

And guess where just fell to the Yellow Turbans :v:

Sweet. I've had to tone back half of my mod library but that's for the best. I'm not quite sure how the city wuxing system works or how the new recruitment works but it seems really neat. I added TUP to it to get even more characters.

Basically minor settlements have an add-on building you can build. For some factions it adds more supplies to the region, or lowers the total movement points of enemy armies. For other factions or specific regions it's a recruitment building that allows you to recruit region-specific or faction-specific units. The cap on the number of units is increased if you have more of those buildings. There's generally some minor negative impact on the recruitment buildings. Off the top of my head I know some of them increase the influence of "foreign ethnic groups" which has a public order penalty, and the Sun Jian faction buildings increase corruption.

Really that's where you should be expanding as Sun Jian anyways, after taking the initial city it's usually best to hightail it back to Changsha and claim the rest of it, then Poyang just to the east as both of those are some of the most lucrative commanderies in the game and you get a weapon/armorsmith.

Sun Ce is pretty fun since it's a relatively easy campaign to get a bunch of unique characters. Well, also the fact that Sun Ce is busted.

Yeah I played as him and he is turbo OP.

His ministers get better with skill AND he gets a mechanic to give characters free XP. One of the minister roles gives a construction cost discount and build time discount, maxing the time at -3. With the tech, pretty much everything builds in one turn, which is insane for your economy.

edit: Liu ... Yang, I think, has a unique portrait and I would love if you could play as him.

The records about the area probably aren't the best. The only warlords RTK has down there(other than Yan Baihu) are Liu Yao and Wang Lang(who are currently minors).

Liu Yao controls a rich commandery and was one of Sun Ce's main antagonists(IIRC, he's also Liu Dai's brother. Random fact). Historically, after Sun Ce defeated him, he holed up further south, in Yuzhang, and managed to hold out until he died in 199, at which point his remaining forces surrendered. He had a son, but I've never even seen him named, so he must have been a Tao Ying-esque non-entity.

Wang Lang was an up-and-coming official appointed to Hui Ji, but I'm not sure that he did much before getting pasted by Sun Ce. He wound up escaping and serving Cao Cao for the rest of his life.

Other than them, it's just Han officials and bandits who are even more obscure. Oh, and the one Yellow Turban group down there.

The west really needs Liu Yan/Zhang and Zhang Lu, while we're at it.

I think Liu Yao has a good chance of being a FLC lord, CA has a tendency to add in upcoming DLC/FLC content a major patch or two prior to their release.

Some other FLC candidates I think are likely (worth keeping in mind they'd have to be playable in the 190 start date): The mentioned Liu Zhang, Zhang Lu, Han Sui, Zhang Xiu (would guess he'd be up next if predictions about a Guandu DLC being next are right), Gongsun Du (probably tied to a Korea expansion), and maybe Yang Feng for another Bandit faction.

Ahh thank you both for the info - I still have not read the books (there are books, right?) or the Chinese TV show that I have heard about (queue CaoCaoLaughing.gif) so I have no idea what is going on in the big picture. I know a few of the names from playing Dynasty Warriors in my teens but thats it. The Bandit playstyle doesnt jive with me at this point but I'm the kind of person that likes some space to breathe but most of the playable characters are all up in one swath of land and I feel like it turns into a thunderdome pretty quick.

Oh, I don't know very much more than you.
The big problem is that, in this time period, the South was relatively sparsely populated and remote from the center of power(in this era, the Central Plains region that is heavily populated with warlords is where most of the people and the economy were situated). Particularly once you get away from the Chang Jiang/Yangtze River, Han control was probably very loose and more notional than actual. It wasn't until after the 3K era the South began taking off as a population center(mostly because much of the north ended up being overrun by various invaders).

Yeah I was surprised to see that much of the southeast coast is 'uncolonized' land in most of the start dates but I guess that all makes sense.

Yeah its weird and maybe it doesnt jive with me because I just dont know the game that well yet and once I understand the mechanics and how to abuse them better. But a bunch of the mechanics just seem to go against the logic of how you want to normally run things which just may make it impossible for my brain

It's not that the region is actually unpopulated, it's that CA has only made it the region of Yellow Turbans and Yan Baihu and made the rest deserted instead of having standalone Yue factions in said counties... although if I recall correctly the More Starting Factions mod adds a generic Shanyue Tribes faction.

Yeah, I don't mind it being YT area, it's nice for them to survive in a few areas.

Been trying out this TROM conversion and it's really fun! I highly recommend it. The Sogd units in particular I really like.

RoyalScion
May 16, 2009
Bandits are kind of weird since they're supposed to rely on tributaries for income but at least on harder difficulties it's really annoying to make factions become your tributary (maybe I need to issue more ultimatums?).

The limited units is a bit annoying but later on bandits get so much corruption reduction and retinue upkeep from their tree you can field a billion armies and it's not a problem. Then once you capture a seat you can just spam emperor units instead.

Also for whatever reason you can't force other factions to abdicate emperorship if you play bandits, so you have to take all the remaining seats. That said, Zheng Jiang is pretty busted once you get enough infamy to be unbreakable everywhere.

Flipswitch

A lot of the character art mods seems to give types of heroes new varied art, but it doesn't solve much of an issue with the base ones I'm afraid. :(

There's actually quite a few art mods now between all the puzzle-types, WDGs, the new TUP mods and it's a bit confusing which does what and how they all interact (and they all work on-top of MTU). Does anyone here use a specific set?

The Doomhammer
Feb 14, 2010

I don't think there's anything that gives bandit generics their own set of portraits yet. I thought WDG did but now i'm pretty sure it just has some scruffier designs suited to bandits but not unique to them.

TUP is neat. It's essentially the MTU + WDG + Puzzlemods (portraits, 3d models, skills) mega mod that combines them all into one thing. Also adds a bunch of new items, plus everyone who had a portrait added gets a unique title, further diversifying all the characters. Don't think I've bothered employing a generic officer since I started using it.

The downside is that the new items and titles haven't had their flavor text translated into English yet, so you lose out on that. also, I'm pretty sure it's not compatible with TROM though I haven't tried yet.

Flipswitch
Mar 30, 2010

Yeah I posted about TUP on the mod and it isn't compatible with TROM.

What mods do you use and load order for the TUP, Doomhammer? I got a bit confused on which ones I needed and in what order. Do I need Puzzle Illustration and Puzzle 3D enabled? Or just the newer Puzzlecore mod?

Flipswitch fucked around with this message at 05:01 on Jan 24, 2021

Yeah the way they implemented them was pretty rough. They really needed a better way for fleets to blockade. Chasing down fleets is such a pain in the rear end. The best thing to do is find a chokepoint and plop down a fleet large enough to defend it, using pickets to extend their range. This is much easier to do in FOTS than in the other modes, mostly because the ships are much more survivable and you can put a Military Port on every coastline to prevent sudden landings (you can even bait fleets into charging into the shore batteries by putting pickets into port). In ROTS and S2 you just want lots of disposable Medium Bune that you can autoresolve.
