It's not really mileage-based - I get my oil analyzed by Blackstone every time I change it, you want to keep an eye on copper and lead levels and if they start to go up as the bearings wear off then it's probably best to get it done prophylactically & the Blackstone analyst will tell you as much in the report. It's around $2500-2800 here in LA, at least last time I looked that was the going rate. Might be more in other locations. That's not "cheap" but it's easy enough to plan for and do and it beats the alternative. My copper in my oil has gone up 10-15% since I bought it in 2015 so I figure it's worth the peace of mind and will probably do it later this year if I see a good coupon/deal price on m3post.com for one of the local places.

Same rec for the S62 - if you don't start seeing copper content going up, there's no reason to do it. They can theoretically catastrophically fail but that's very, very rare.

My dealer hit me with the usual "we are SO desperate for your specific car, we'll pay above market for it!!!" The M2c is sub-5,000 miles after 2 years so I figured I'd entertain an offer. $46,000 lol get outta town

hah. I just rolled over 6k going to pick up the diff for the e30 yesterday morning so I need to schedule service 2. Curious what they'll say because I've moved and the closest dealer is the most unscrupulus one in Atlanta. I guarantee you they'll try and put their license plate surround on it.

For the last 3 years I've had an F31 with the wireless hotspot preparation and I'm soon to get a G31 with the same - both are second hand so it's not something I chose. I never used it in the F31 and this has prompted me to think - what's it even for? Why would I want one of these if my mobile has a SIM that does the same? Does anyone use the wireless hotspot? And if so, what for?

Anyone here have hands on with the newer hybrid x3 models? We’re thinking about getting one but I’m not sure if it’s worth getting over a conventional or dedicated electric car. How is the actual combined, ya know, “hybrid” aspect of the car?

Warbird posted:Anyone here have hands on with the newer hybrid x3 models? We’re thinking about getting one but I’m not sure if it’s worth getting over a conventional or dedicated electric car. How is the actual combined, ya know, “hybrid” aspect of the car? I leased a 2018 330e, so I have some insight. It claimed ~18 miles of electric range and my wife's commute was under 15 miles round trip, so she could make the whole trip and back home on electric power and charge overnight off a 120v plug. Gas motor would kick in when you ran out of charge or if the car decided you were pushing the battery too hard and you weren't in MAX E-DRIVE mode. If she had to run and errand or two after work, it wasn't the end of the world. It was nice to not be punished for forgetting to plug in the car overnight as the car would just fire up the gas engine. It was also nice not having to stress about finding electric charging at destinations, but rather a nice bonus if there was one there and available to use. Downsides to the setup was that it ate a good chunk of trunk space for the batteries and the 'handoff' between electric and gas power was kinda abrupt. People say that it's smoother in the newer cars, but I haven't tried out a newer one yet. The brakes are also a bit touchy since there's some regenerative braking to charge the batteries going on so it just never felt natural to me as to how much brake I was getting versus my inputs. When I started driving the 330e, the main benefits started to evaporate. I have a ~40 mile round trip commute, so I'd eat up most of the electric range on the way to the office. They didn't provide free charging at the office, and when I did the math it was cheaper for me to just buy more gas than to pay for the charging at work. I'm sure my MPG was slightly better than if I was in a gas car overall, but it was annoying at best when the battery would be close to empty and the car couldn't figure out if it wanted to use the gas or battery so it would flip between the two repeatedly. I would end up putting the car into sport mode, which forced the engine on.

Oh so it does have regenerative whatchamahoozit brakes then? The rep we got wasn’t super knowledgeable, pleasant fellow though, and it didn’t feel like the Mrs.’s hybrid Civic so I wasn’t sure. Granted that thing’s an 06 iirc so things have changed; notably insofar as the 60 advertised MPG on the x3 is double that of her ride.

It's not like in the Tesla / Leaf where the car is actively braking for you to get energy, but rather just harvests whatever energy it can glean off of your car's forward momentum. So don't expect the car to slow you down, but rather it'll try to charge a few percents if you're coasting down a hill. I tried for a while to track our MPG, but while the wife drove the car on her super short commute we wouldn't even refill the gas tank for like, six or seven weeks. I was getting closer to 40-ish when taking into account depleting the batteries on the morning drive in and using only gas on the drive back home.

Gotcha. I’m largely fine with it being kind of lovely as a stand-alone EV if the actual intended hybrid setup is fine in and of itself. I was a bit bummed about the HUD though. The inlaws have a newer top trim Madza and it’s super nice to have the blind spot stuff in there. The x3 might have had it, but it didn’t appear to as best I could tell. It’s likely going to this or an a5 sport back; I’d love to go for a wagon but good luck finding one.

Less than a grand would be bonkers cheap. I paid about $600 in labor for Science of Speed to rebuild a diff after I supplied the OSGiken, new OEM bearings, and Weir pinion spacer with shims. We require E30 build pics, thanks

I think N55 ranges between $125 and $140? I assume the S55 takes more oil? Pretty sure the S65 took a lot more, and a much heavier oil. Between the N52 and the N55, I don't mind changing the oil, assuming the garage isn't freezing rear end cold. Much easier than my older Toyotas, I cut my hands on poo poo in the engine bay a lot less with BMW's setup.

Tesla has a way of always announcing future products that are definitely better than their competitors and makes up bullshit release dates that come and go with nothing delivered. How long ago did we see the new Tesla Roadster and weren't we supposed to definitely have full self driving released this fall? At least when BMW shows a new car we know it actually exists because we've seen it running around the ring behind camo for the last 3 years.

Does anyone know how the Connected features work in terms of compatibility? I have got a 2018 5-series which I added to the 'My BMW' app, but the app says it doesn't have the subscription for remote services (vents, locks, mileage etc.). It sends me to the site to buy it, but is it guaranteed I'll get all the features it lists in the package like on-street parking info, OTA map updates, etc. - or is it possible to buy these and be lacking the relevant package in the vehicle for it to work? I was thinking of going for the 'professional' one with OTA map updates and the on-street parking info but I don't want to spend the extra if it's not guaranteed all the extras will work.
