i still don't understand the point of EA Play on Steam when it still requires and launches Origin

it's literally the same price on origin itself but you get a Humble Trove-esque collection of indie/AA games as well, like two point hospital, sonic mania, the surge 2, my time at portia, trine 4, darkwood, bloodstained, superhot, nex machina, slay the spire, dead cells, vampyr, yoku's island express, plague tale: innocence, moonlighter, detention, into the breach

like i seriously don't understand why you would pay the same price on steam for less value and you still need to use origin anyway

Steam just uses the origin thin client. It’s basically a quick license check.

I never really remember to open my other launchers so it works for me. I’ve rebought stuff I own on EGS just so it’s on something where I’ll remember to play it. Which once got my Borderlands 3 save eaten.

Weirdly, they never made JRPGs back then. It was a lot of licensed stuff, along with shmups and, oddly, turn-based military strategy games. But with the advent of smart phones they found a niche churning out boatloads of the most generic JRPGs ever made. They put out like ten of them every year, in all kinds of different styles and settings, it's wild.

Utawarerumono is out on Steam at last, which means that all three parts of its trilogy are on steam! It's a visual novel / srpg fusion about animal people going to war. You play in the first one as a masked amnesiac who can't remove the mask or remember anything.

So far the port seems really good!

Now for the elephant in the room: according to the internet, this is the all-ages version of the game, AND the best one as the original NSFW content was tacked on and added very very little to the story - to the point that you aren't supposed to notice that it's missing, it was that inconsequential. Great! ...and yes, oh man, the steam forums are full of horny men being sad about not having bad anime porn to play.

I use these. Sometimes they just fail to connect with Discord for me, people tell me I am quiet, and the power button taking three seconds of holding to activate is a lot more annoying than it would seem. Those are my only three complaints, everything else is fire. The Discord connection thing may honestly just be a Discord issue, as I haven't noticed it in a week or more. Solid 4.5/5 imo.

I wear a headset more or less ten hours a day, six days a week, because I use it for work. So getting the best possible one is important to me. My metrics for “best possible” are:

-Wireless. I don’t like being tethered to the desk.
-USB. I use a usb hub to switch my peripherals between two machines, so I need USB connectivity.
-Good microphone and speaker quality. I don’t need audiophile insane fidelity, but it has to be pretty good.
-An easy mic mute option, whether that’s a button on the cans or, preferably, flip-to-mute.
-Durability. I want my headset to last a few years of continuous usage.
-Not super software dependent. I’ve had headsets before that really need their proprietary software suite running to function well, and I can’t install that on my work machine.

I’ve been looking at the Razer A2 Pro Wireless, the Arctis 7 Wireless, and the Astro A50 Wireless.

I’ve been using a Logitech G933 for years now. Had to replace them once but they were still under warranty. They’re fine, good features, good battery life, fairly comfortable. But the EQ on them is awful, the max volume is super low, and the software is terrible.

Yeah, I was leaning this way until I found out about the Astro’s, which look a little more comfortable (no weird headband thing) and have a flip-to-mute mic. The charging dock is a cool feature, but not a must have by any means. They also cost twice as much though, and 300 is getting up there for sure.

It’s hard trying to figure this stuff out because reviews are all over the place. Two different outlets will call the same headset godly or cheapo trash.

Orv
May 4, 2011
Yeah I ended up going back to speakers recently because of some compounding ear issues and just being tired of gaming headset cheapness/gimmicks and boy was that a fun week of "here's four reviews of the thing you're looking at, none of them agree." Wish I could give you more help on the headphone front, all I can say for sure is I'd avoid Razer, their general reputation for lack of reliability can be overstated but it's rarely wrong except for super niche or non-mainline stuff like their fight sticks or controllers. Their headsets, mice and keyboards tend to range from shoddy to abysmal and the last Razer headphones I tried sounded like they were underwater before trying anything funny with them.

A time traveling adventure everyone can enjoy

One thing to keep in mind is that the normal use case for headsets isn't wearing them fro five to eight hours a day, it's an hour or three every couple of days, or maybe several hours on the weekend, so you're not likely to get something that lasts that long and fits all your other criteria, even taking into account that headsets don't really undergo wear in the same way a lot of other stuff does. Honestly, I'd say the most likely outcome is that whatever you gets busts before the warranty wears out.

Rebel Galaxy was fun but definitely not Freelancer, combat in that plays a bit like the boat battles in Assassin's Creed; moving on a 2D plane and broadsides and that kinda thing. Rebel Galaxy Outlaw went more in the freelancer direction with 3d movement in space but honestly I found it really dull in every way except the visual style and I refunded it after a half hour. If you played and love Privateer you might get some enjoyment out of RGO but I was incredibly disappointed by the game after generally being a fan of the first one.

I’ve had good luck with the Arctis! I wear it a ton since I use it to listen to music while working as well as when zooming etc, and it has worked well. No idea about durability yet, but it hits all your other criteria at least.

Work bought me a pair of the Arctis 7's a month or so ago. The headband part is a lot more comfortable than it would appear. Previous to that, I had a set of Jabra Evolve 75's that were also nice. The only complaint I have about the Arctis 7 is that retracting the microphone completely doesn't mute it - theres a button to mute instead. I'm in these for 8-9 hours a day, with breaks where I'll take them off for a few minutes to an hour or two at a time.

So far, my only complaint against the Arctis 7's is that they aren't Bluetooth, so if my dock disconnects, I lose audio.
