i don't think the US intervenes anywhere altruistically, which is why they didn't give a poo poo about rwanda. they always take from wherever they bomb. i'm also very skeptical of talk about "denying agency" and demands to "listen to [people from country X who happen to agree with me that america has the right to intervene in their affairs]" as lines of argument. particularly when a good deal of the time america has worked to exacerbate or cause whatever conflict i'm now being told i must support a US intervention in. "oh but this one time we might actually do some good" in the face of 90 years of history is born of an american supremacist worldview.

i also don't know what an american civilian is supposed to do about "the imperialism of china and russia".

Some of the folks involved were very respectful and thoughtful

Some folks were shitposting and belittling people for daring to either not know things or think differently

I listen to and mostly enjoy Robert’s podcasts, but he’s also a rising star in left journalism and (at least here in Portland especially due to his very dedicated coverage of the events of this summer) picking up a lot of influence. I find his casual dismissal of anti-intervention positions as tankies troubling because there’s compelling good faith reasons to be deeply skeptical of western intervention and the media narratives that sell it. If I’d realized this thread was about his content (in retrospect machetes is kind of obvious but there’s a billion podcasts out there) I probably would have posted in here sooner, if nothing else than to rib the guy for mispronouncing Portland landmarks (I’ve caught ‘Laurelwood’ Park and Willa-metty, hopefully he finds reason to talk about the street between burnside and Davis sometime soon). I think it’s fair when you have a chance to even briefly interact with people of relative influence to challenge them on weaker points

Protip: it's pronounced two ways. Kind of like "worster" or "wurster" sauce(the chestershire part is silent), or the way that will not trip you up, "Lee and Perrins". Best way to eat it is a little dash in the top of a bag of salt and vinegar crisps/chips, roll the top, shake it up, and you're set.

maybe hungary because they had like 2 or 3 right wing coups during the war and than the nazis stepped in directly when they didnt kill jews fast enough. plus tons of CIA backed poo poo in the cold war. maybe july 20th against hitler because that was mostly military conservatives blaming hitler for losing the war and poo poo.

speaking of the dumbass derail and weird black and white tankie poo poo.

i know Robert already covered the Japanese red army. but there is a great story about a smaller group that basicaly killed the left in japan called the united red army. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Red_Army they legit killed most of their memeber in "self criticism" sessions in the moutains and than the survovors took hostages in a lodge and it turned into a violent blood bath. basicaly the leaders had been embarased in a bigger lefty group and they split off and got ultra stupid about it,

there is a fantastic movie from japan about it that i recommend to everyone.

we are still early in the series probably. we might still get that kinda stuff. the whole japanese goverment in the 30s and 40s is loving fascinating. its like the invasion of iraq in the W years but but the cabinanet and presidency were constantly getting assonated because junior officer or official got mad that the president didnt say something correctly in one speech in private about the invasion.

oh hey, i got no issue discussing this and doing a back and forth, I had a perfectly civil and evidence based discussion with someone else in this thread who disagrees with me. it's the dude who keeps saying i'm pro regime change in venezuela and never actually does anything but shitpost that i don't particularly respect, but I'm just gonna ignore him from here on out

i don't think anyone who is against intervention is a tankie. thinking any intervention in the syrian civil war is a bad idea is a logically and morally defensible position. when people start making conspiracy theories to argue that Assad didn't gas anyone is when it crosses the Tankie bridge to me.

next two episodes are on "the fascists that failed", so we're talking Feb 6 1934 in Paris and then the Business Plot.

there are a bunch more i could've done but the series has to end at some point so we can talk about grifters again and give people a break.

and also give me a break. the spanish civil war episodes were hard.

you're right about this. i think the only reason i've avoided doing more president episodes (we've done two on Reagan, and referenced bastardry from a few others) is that my old boss Dan wrote a whole book about them and I always feel a little like I'd be stomping on his territory, which is dumb of me
