I think the reason people try to cook food in hotel room coffee pots is the same reason why, when I was ten and my family moved to a new city in search of jobs but neither of my parents were yet employed, and we lived in a hotel room for a week while mom and dad tried to find a place to rent they could afford, we ate nothing but peanut butter sandwiches and cheerios. People are poor and can't eat at restaurants every night, and hotels don't have real kitchens and might not even have a fridge, and they get bored of eating like that.

I'd still rather just go get gas station food than go and buy salmon and cook it in the dumbest way possible. At least the gas station sushi or whatever was prepared and stored properly, at least theoretically.

No. I have seen that in the $140 a night hotel I worked at as well. People think thing get hot thing make food. It is not about poverty. I would argue that the people that had to live in a hotel, like me, knew how to not be absolute assholes about their behaviour because they like having a roof. This isn't make do poo poo. It's people not understanding basic humanity. E: Oh there's the time I had to find the smell of rotting flesh in a visibly clean room. Turns out someone cooked something with a clothing iron and put it back without so much as a howdy to cleaning it off. Maybe you're trying to save money on eating out, maybe you want to get into the novelty of a way to cook something yourself with inoptimal tools, but once you use the hotel paraphernalia for cooking, you're probably going to ruin it for whatever other use you might want it for, including trying to cook with it again. I guess maybe cooking with an iron is okay if you use foil so that there's not direct contact between the food and iron. I've seen grilled cheeses that work like that. Don't put it directly on the iron and fill up the iron's water reservoir with butter.

I didn't say it was a good decision, only that I know where it comes from. To be honest, the hotel life was twenty seven years ago and I only remember peanut butter sandwiches, dry cheerios, and hot chocolate because there was a kettle in the room.

Some of the worst food in this thread is this “family meals all the kids will love” style crap. Sure kids can be picky and you can’t cook a proper meal every time but why not just... canned pasta, sausage, and buttered bread served individually?

I always thought the point of meals "kids will love" is that you're sneaking nutrition in there. Of course kids will love canned spaghetti with bread and butter. You don't have to trick them into eating that.
