AzureSkys posted:That gave me a vague memory of a story where something was going on and a fighter pilot just did a high speed low pass over the crowd and settled it down. Granted it may shatter windows for miles, I wonder how effective something like that might be towards big mobs. I was in Mogadishu Somalia in '92 and there was one big riot (based on a rumor we were going to stop providing fresh water which was not true) where it looked like things were going to become FUBAR really quick. A series of Harriers did low altitude passes over the crowd disbursing them in a few minutes. I was about 20' off the ground in a tower, I don't think the aircraft were much higher.

hobbesmaster posted:“Remove before flight” is really a suggestion. I'm hoping my policy of "I don't give a poo poo how comfortable you feel, pull out the checklist" during training and flight reviews has saved or will save people from a fate like this. EDIT: To be clear, I do it all the time, not just during training or flight reviews, but I insist on my students/review candidates doing it too. I hope they keep the habit for when they're flying by themselves. PT6A fucked around with this message at 21:19 on Jan 22, 2021 |

I remember reading somewhere that according to aerodynamic theory, a wing would be most efficient if its tips continued up and over the top of the plane and connected back to each other, and winglets are the first stage of that. so

ASN Wikibase posted:While tied down for several days, the aircraft was attacked and partially eaten by an Alaskan brown bear. Damage was reported to the fusalage, horizontal stablizer, landing gear, and windows of the aircraft. No human casualties were reported. The bear escaped but presumably suffered some gastrointestinal difficulties as it defecated several times in the area. Extensive field maintainence and temporary repairs were carried out on the aircraft and it was flown to Anchorage for repairs. https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/72316 And this is not the only time this has happened to a Super Cub, either. A Marineflieger example was "attacked" by a cow back in the 1960s.
