I’m mostly just wondering where I should be looking for those kinds of ridiculous deals. Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace are mostly junk. Nextdoor isn’t too bad I guess.

The good stuff gets snapped up literally in seconds. You have to F5 that browser window all day. The Mac was listed as "broken", and the screenshots said that the OS tried to boot, failed, tried to recover and failed again. This indicates a hard drive issue, and the hard drive cable is a known problem on this model. The seller didn't know this, but I did.

Second most important thing is to say "I will come right now, pay you money, take it with me and not ask any questions". When something attractive comes up for sale, this will put you ahead of anyone who tries to haggle, goes "maybe I can come later to take a look at it, can you reserve it until next week?" or needs stuff shipped.

It's a fun hobby and you get good deals, but many hours of my week are spent looking at lovely ads, driving to pick up stuff, ordering parts on ebay that might take weeks to arrive, filling my house up with broken stuff, repairing electronics with unknown issues, and then finally writing and posting ads and dealing with people who wants to ask questions and haggle over things I have for sale cheaper than anyone else.

I'm glad I do this just for fun, because I wouldn't do it as a living like some peope do. My post history in this thread has lots of cool stuff I have picked up over the years.

Wife and I bought a Peloton Bike+.

Although we both just got our COVID vaccines, we've sort of become of the opinion that our gym was pretty dirty and crowded and that we're not especially interested in going back. And as I'm not sure I'll be returning to jogging any time soon after a nasty sprain last year that is still causing some pain six months on, we figured probably nice to have something convenient to get some quality exercise in.

After ordering 8 GB of RAM, a new battery and a new hard drive cable, it is not so cheap any more, but it is just too nice to waste away. While I wait for parts to arrive, I have installed a 180 GB SSD I had lying around, installed Catalina, reseated all the cables to to the motherboard and cleaned out all the dust.

Is that one of the pre soldered RAM models? I've got a late 2013 model I got hand me down from the Mrs. and I'd very much be down for an SSD swap and slapping more than 4 gigs of RAM in.

Yeah, the Mid 2012 can still have its RAM swapped out for bigger modules. Doesn't look like the Late 2013 model can.

Seconding this! Two years ago I bought a Mission Workshop Fitzroy 40L backpack . The bag is basically a big empty rucksack which is just big enough for traveling light and can be really well organized with packing cubes. It’s even the perfect size to bring as a free carryon for discount airlines like Spirit or Allegiant. Even though it has mostly sat in the closet this past year, it still looks like new after being thrown around, dragged, mashed, overpacked, knocked about, rained on, etc. Really the only thing I don’t like is the material attracts cat hair, so I inevitably need to lint roller it before a trip.

For backpacking I still prefer my Zpacks Dyneema bag just because it hardly weighs anything, but the fabric doesn’t have a bunch of abrasion resistance so it’s not so great for travel

Honestly, by throwing an ssd and some extra ram into a 2012 macbook, it won’t feel hardly any different than a 2020 macbook other than physical heft. Still a decent computer, nice keyboard and trackpad, and will browse the internet and do 96% of the same end user stuff at the same speed, just in a physically heavier package. There’s even enough compute to adequately run VMs, and decent performance in creative suite applications. Plus the swappable hard drive means you can chuck a terabyte ssd in there if you need extra local storage.

Only real problems are that it’s probably nearing the end of its supported OS updates lifecycle, and battery life doesn’t touch new laptops. And 802.11AC is a decent NIC upgrade from 802.11N, but probably not hugely noticeable for most home networks. But on the other hand the 2012 pro has a magsafe charger, which is so much nicer than the new usb c stuff. Honestly getting rid of that and changes to the keyboard make some of the older macbooks more desirable than some of the new stuff. Plus Apple products generally just tend to keep running well over time, which can’t be said of most other consumer electronics.

Imho, the value of cramming more compute resources into end user workstations has had severely diminishing returns for the last 8-10 years, unless people have specific uses for the extra cycles. Newer is not always a good value proposition, especially without discernible accompanying utility. A 40$ raspberry pi is entirely adequate as a primary computer replacement for most people to browse pornhub and doomscroll twitter.

Did you just order it or did you receive it? I know it's been a nightmare trying to get bikes delivered.

We bought a peloton right before the bike+ was announced, we were in the window where we could return it and order the bike+ but it sounded like a huge ordeal. It was something along the lines of buy the bike+ at full retail, and then you have to arrange the original bike to be picked up. But the problem was that they weren't scheduling returns, so you'd have to make several hours of phonecalls to confirm the delivery and pickup return were the same trip. I don't have that kind of patience and didn't feel like being out another $2500 for several months potentially.

Regardless, I love the bike. I could stand it use it more (I'm probably averaging about 3 rides a week give/take) but it's great. I'm not a full-on cult member molding my personality around it, but I think it's an excellent gym replacement for an average out of shape person like me. I'd recommend getting a heart rate monitor if you don't have one already, I like being able to see my HR zones.

It's to replace a pair of bose soundsport that my father gave me because he didn't really use them. I hated them for sticking out so far out of my ear and they finally broke down. The fact that they added ANC on the 75t made me want to get them because I never had good quality earphones with ANC. They also look like they sit pretty flush to the ear so they should be good for falling asleep while listening to audiobook which I like to do.

I bought a polar chest strap HR monitor prior to having the peloton and it works well with the bike (and standalone with smartphone apps). We got a peloton branded one for my wife and that seems to work fine too, though she doesn't use it often.

I'd also recommend some wireless bluetooth earbuds/headphones if you don't have those already and you don't want to use the speakers. You can use wired headphones but the cord can be a pain. I have a cheap wireless set that I use just for the peloton.

I wasn’t even really aware that the 85t and ANC existed until this morning. It seems that the only real difference in the SKUs is the 85t is open ear vs the 65t/75t’s closed ear design. It’s a bit aggravating as iirc the 65 and 75 were in regards to their IP rating.

In my experience, you can push a mac laptop way further than a windows machine before it starts showing it's age. I got ten years of use out of my old 2006 macbook, though the last two years weren't the best. IDK if it's the os using lower resources or what, but they make fantastic long term netbooks. My 2015 MBP still operates as well as the day I bought it, and I use it for heavy media and web browsing tasks. Not sure I'd buy another apple computer when this one dies, though.

On topic, I did just buy and install replacement battery for it.
