because honestly the first 5 seconds or so of the ed is a good portrayal of how spiders scuttle really fast and i find it satisfying to watch and i’ll be sad to lose the spider gimmick

also the small enka interlude is fun

silver spoon is great

cooking papa is fun if you want some relaxing 90s anime vibes with low stakes; the backgrounds are all done in that sailor moon watercolor aesthetic which is always really nice to look at; yakitake japan is also good but i assume everyone knows about it already

It's kinda like a middle finger to Atlas Shrugged because it's also all about trains, but also about how great they are when they are a government service instead of a service for profit.

The guys trying to privatize the railroad are very blatantly bad.the leftist politics of this has not gone unnoticed by many viewers.

Alright cool, I'll put em on the list too. fwiw I didn't intend to be looking for "food show" per se, in that it's known for being only all about food, just I enjoy stuff where it's gorgeous scenes of people are sitting around eating some nice looking steaming dumplings and talking or whatever in between other things happening like Yuru Camp and such. but those look good.

What about some action-y ones? I did enjoy KLK a lot even though i don't have a frame of reference.

doing a rewatch while taking care of my kid at night and I made it to the scene where Raoh spares Toki and god drat what a great scene with some cool dynamics going on, but boy is this even sadder than I remember lol :smith:

It would be cool to see a remake of this show and rework a few of the more dated elements (that treatment of Mamiya uh yikes :chloe:) because so much of this is good and I'm forever salty that it still hasn't caught in on North America like it has in other places outside of Japan

There's a lot of fascist imagery in the show being utilized by the protagonists and it takes a bit before the story really starts to call it into question in a major way. But ultimately I think the story has thematically landed on the idea that literally everything lovely has happened because of some kind of reactionary power.

the ending/where the story is currently would also seem to point to the Great Man Theory that underpins fascism as being... flawed, to say the least

but that truffaut quote also applies: it’s hard to include fascism in media without making it appealing on some level to someone, unless you’re making it so cartoonish and abstract (like in the new star wars films) that it ceases to be a coherent ideology (or even ceases to be fascism) and consequentially it looks ridiculous that anyone would believe it

nuance is hard

Fascism wouldn't be dangerous if it wasnt appealing. Hell, the heart of horseshoe theory isnt even wrong; much fascist and communist writing differ only on how they define the 'in group'. Fascists support the perceived majority and communists everyone, minus our enemies. It does blur a little. Most of that is fascist thinkers intentionally piggy backing on known populism, but it doesnt magically stop being inherently appealing because of that.

eh, tbh this is a really weak understanding of communist and fascist writing. i get what you're saying in terms of contemporary politics, but if you have any deeper understanding this stuff you're not showing it right now

the stuff in the twitter link had a really good concise point: fascism is fundamentally the aestheticization of politics, and communism responds to this by politicizing art.

libs have hosed that up a lot by coopting the superficial aspects of it, but optimistically this might drive a synthesis (note that this is not an endorsement of cozying up to the fash).

I have tons of things I want to say about Takahata-san, -laughs- but Grave of the fireflies attracts my attention most. That's an immoral world, since it's a story of incest. And the image of death is lined up right behind it. In that sense, it was an erotic movie, and it gave me chills.

I dunno I think a lot of dumbass libs are like 'wow why would anyone be a fascist??'. My post overly simplified but fascism would never have succeeded if it was not on some level appealing and convincing. I think you have to be kind of a surface level dipshit or a sociopath to fall for it, but that's my own bias speaking up. If I really though that many people were stupid I'd be a liberal.
