Also, I'd highly recommend talking to your county's veterans office or the DAV this week, well before your separation physical. I'd would absolutely have a VSO file for you, do not do this on your own.

There should be a few VA reps in your area that specifically advocate for your disability claims. You did TAP via PowerPoint? I'll get some resources together and post them later today.

There's a ton of online resources from Fleet and Family. Notably VTAP. You'll need an account, register at mynavyfamily.com You can register for the sessions or webinars there. From nmci https://learning.zeiders.refineddata.com I would have posted the flyer but I can't figure out how to upload a pdf on mobile.

Do you have a degree or do you plan on entering the work force right after separation? There are several really good transition programs that can ease you back into civilian work. I went through FourBlock because another goon sponsored me. Depending on your timeline, I could do the same for you if you’d like.

Virginia has some run by the gov but I haven’t found them useful so far, maybe if my current job falls through. I’ll check that one out! Stuff like that would be useful.

Dumb question but where should I be looking for health insurance? I’m kinda realizing I’ll need to handle that and I have no idea how that works since I went parents plan -> military. Any good non-sales resources out there on how civilian healthcare works? Any recommendations? I’m located in VA and generally healthy.

I use the VA exclusively for my healthcare because it costs me 0.

If you have a job lined up ask about their health benefits. My job at the shipyard has a fairly good plan for like $20/w but if not I don’t know how healthcare works either cus I went from dad’s plan-navy too.

Seriously, though. If you have a disability rating (which you all should) you can get free healthcare with no out of pocket expenses ever. Is the VA perfect? Nah. But I can see a doctor or therapist today without an appointment, all my drugs are ready at the same time in the same building (or overnight mailed to me), and I can get all the specialty care I need. The VA has paid for hip surgery and a vasectomy. I’ve been to the ER a handful of times over the past few years. I’ve had zero out of pocket costs, and the VA even pays me if I have to drive to go see a specialist.

Is there a minimum requirement? I thought they were strict about only covering directly connected service stuff. I imagine I’ll be somewhere around 10-25%?

I imagine I’ll be somewhere around 10-25%? It does have some requirements. At 10% you'll have free healthcare at a VA outpatient clinic and some copays for various services. Once you get 50% or above, it's all covered. Here's a lot of stuff to read that will answer most questions you have: https://www.va.gov/health-care/about-va-health-benefits/cost-of-care/

So one more question to add, what's the cultural expectation with most civilian jobs and appointments? I've always wondering how you're supposed to go to doctors appointments and such while working a regular job. Dumb question I know, but I've always worked either lovely part time jobs, shift work, or been in the military. I just wish there was a cheat sheet somewhere or a guide for the process of transitioning, even though I felt like I prepared myself so well it's still overwhelming trying to figure it out. Anyway, that's my bitch. I need to sleep and get ready for work tonight instead of google stuff poo poo. Butter Activities fucked around with this message at 15:45 on Jan 28, 2021 |

I get it because im 100% P and T and the dental clinic here in Jax is excellent, way more modern than any Navy clinic I'd used. The VA clinics in general around here are a notch above most Navy clinics in wear and tear. There's a wait for appointments but not as bad as Navy clinics and comparable to civ. I haven't had to use my tricare for anything yet because i can just do all my routine stuff through the VA for free. No complaints so far!

Dumb question I know, but I've always worked either lovely part time jobs, shift work, or been in the military. It depends on the job. If you don't have paid sick time then you just try to schedule time off, have someone cover your shift, or work around it. It is all so variable that it is hard to give a specific answer. Theoretically you could use sick/medical time for your appointments or the appointments of your family, but again it is so variable that it is hard to say. Generally employers know that most medical appointments happen during the week and there are things in place to allow that to happen. The area you might run into the most trouble with this would be manufacturing I would think. All the factories I visited when I worked for Mitsubishi only cared about production and numbers and gave no shits about their employees. But in those cases they were all shift work, so something could be worked out.

Yes but wait a week after you get out before you apply for it and make sure you get your original DD-214 from your command. I know that sounds dumb but it’s a real thing that they’ll give you a copy of a copy of a copy of your DD-214. Also make sure to mail a copy of your DD-214 to whatever address the unemployment site tells you to the same day you apply for it or it can cause issues. As for going to doctor’s appointments during working hours you just need a doctor’s note to show your boss afterwards but if you’re hourly you won’t get paid for the work you miss. That’s it for hourly at my job, at least.

The basic idea is that you did your contract and have your dd214 so it isn't much different than losing your job because the mill shutdown or w/e. Also it keeps new veterans who don't have their poo poo together going from Uncle Sam's teet to nothing at all and not like we have a functioning safety net for society Edit: Here are some resources Virginia EC: https://www.vec.virginia.gov/veterans/priority-of-service-for-veterans-and-eligible-spouses Virginia UI: https://www.vec.virginia.gov/unemployed Background info: https://oui.doleta.gov/unemploy/ucx.asp Nick Soapdish fucked around with this message at 22:12 on Jan 28, 2021 |

I was unemployed for three months struggling and filing for benefits each week and never received a penny from them. Sent in my DD-214 drat near twenty times and I think I actually spent around $50 faxing it to them multiple times but they kept saying they couldn’t read it. So just try and start work as soon as you get out if you can. It’s also only $375 a week so not as worth it as when I was trying to file it and it had that extra $600 a week.

Its state and income dependent. CA maxes at $450/week and I think there's more on top with COVID funds. CA makes it easy to get money, some states make it hard. Its enough to pay basic bills and prevent you from falling into the first poo poo job you find and hold out for something decent.
