The keybed is amazing by the way. I just got a Moog Grandmother and while the full size fatar keys are amazing the reface is barely anything worse. Mini keys but the feel of them is fantastic. The FM engine sounds beautiful and I’m a big fan of the interface too. I come from an analog synth base and it’s lovely being able to dial in FM easily while playing around on the keys.

The manual you linked has local control settings for controlling the Reface’s internal synth engine with an external keyboard, not for using the keyboard to control external gear. It looks like you can set channel-outs for things like the keyboard and sequencer and so forth. Honestly this looks like a serious pain in the rear end, and probably more trouble than it’s worth- the Reface series largely works as “really good modules plus a handy little keyboard with aftertouch if you want it” and less so the other way around. It’s probably fine if you want to set it and forget it in either “MIDI controller” or “synth” mode but it clearly isn’t meant to be switched up on the fly or during a performance or whatever. If OP really wants seamless “both worlds” midi keyboard/internal synth performance from Yamaha maybe look at the MX49/MX61? Edit: just got done reading through the MX49’s spec sheet. Synths still output their MIDI while local control is off. The main use case is to avoid MIDI feedback when running through a DAW, but it will do what Martytoof needs.

I just pulled the trigger on one via reverb — they’re out of stock at a ton of retailers, as is a lot of music/hobby stuff so I ended up just biting the bullet while my impulse buy nerve was tingling  I’m in Canada anyway so I’m not sure I was looking forward to dealing with cross border shipping so I’ll be happy with my domestically sourced one. Thanks for the tip anyway though!

My jam lately is just a DX7 straight into a Digitone to use the chorus, that way have a drum machine and a bassist to play the keyboard with. A ton of R&D went into those, very complex machines.

Get all the thousands and thousands of carts people have programmed for DX7 over 30 years, load them into dexxed and see what the settings are maybe Unless you are talking about a Reface then that wouldn't work.

Fm Theory and Applications: By Musicians for Musicians it's cowrtitten by john chowning and I remember it being worth reading. you should be able to find a pdf of it without too much trouble. the first thing you want, never mind theory or guides or anything, is a software interface for patching. menu diving and changing multiple parameters is a chore, a good librarian/patcher makes it much easier

Making fm patches is for wizards. I'm fairly synth literate (modular, puredata, coded several software synths from scratch including a basic additive synth) and anything beyond simple 2op patches may as well be roullette for me.

Why would anyone get a Reface DX instead of an OPSIX, is it just because of price? Buying a $300+ Dtronics add on sega 32x looking controller for a $300 Reface seems pretty funny. adding this pic of this which is about the same price of a Reface DX if you DIY it

Watching Reface Dx videos, I can deffo see now why someone would want one for $250. There are soundblaster chip 2OP FM Yamaha's you can get for $100 if you look hard enough which could be an option too.

Opsix was on my radar but it's both more expensive than I wanted to spend right now and physically a little too deep for the space I have available for a keyboard synth. My goal was at least rudimentary FM synth with a keyboard controller I could repurpose as a MIDI controller which it sounds like I can do with the DX so I'm pretty cool with the choice

Man Reverb seller comes through. Cross country to my door in less than 24 hours. I knew the Reface DX was small but I don't think I was mentally prepared for how compact it is. Not that it's bad, was just a bit of a shock even knowing the dimensions. Still figuring this thing out but so far I'm really enjoying it. I'm definitely going to want to get a patch editor though -- menu diving isn't my passion here. If I could justify it I think that the DT-RDX would be on my list. Techno is one of those things that's deceptive. I love it but on a "I put a techno mix on when I want something to listen to I don't have to pay attention to" level, but then get utterly absorbed anyway. Superficially it's simple to make but to do good techno and make something arresting out of so few sounds, all your sounds/tones need to be on point cos there's nowhere to hide. When I'm dicking around on my Maschine I'll tend to start with the ubiquitous 4/4 kick and go from there- polyrhythms are your friend for percussion, for example a 7 bar long hihat loop and 12 bar bassline over that kick will take forever to resolve but can remain interesting throughout as they all interact.

I just really wish I knew what all is going on in the production of Universal Indicator Green https://youtu.be/pmZUJKbbKqs The synergy between the sequencing and effects and tonal choices are so complex, just incredible. Like I know the entire series was made with multiple 101/202/303/606/707/808/909, as well as an MS-20, and then obviously some fx, but considering how distinct most of those machines are there are very few moments in both the Green and Red albums where I can say 'oh yes clearly that is X'. To my ear the best techno album ever made.
