LanceHunter posted:Outright opposition vs. dishonest goalpost-moving is a very thin line... Ah yes, that person sure got Grey there... by taking tweets that span over four years as a big gotcha. If 15/hr legislation were passed in 2017 then we'd be at 15/hr right now but it didn't. 15/hr wasn't even a livable wage in 2017 much less in 2021. We should be at 25/hr right now and goodness knows what in 2025. There's more push-back on this pittance of a minimum wage than there was when the fed conjured billions to inject into the market to buy investors a hour to sell their shares before it continued its spiral last year.

Inconsistency is when you demand a higher minimum wage in 2017 and a higher minimum wage in 2021, consistency is when you say "A $2000* check if our candidate wins."

Denmark keeps getting brought up as a shining example of welfare, but that poo poo is degrading here while the banks and corporations are getting all the benefits without paying the taxes. All the while people on welfare have to hear a constant chanting of how they shouldn't be complaining because everyone outside of Scandinavia is way worse of so shut up. Terrible Opinions posted:This would only be true of the cost of living were primarily driven by labor costs, and if the market was efficient. Both of these are things we know to be completely false. Everywhere in America operates at minimum staffing to function anyways. Well, I found out today that a bunch of people at my job were getting laid off, leaving myself and a handful of other people left to make the bare minimum required to get things done. Granted things have been extremely slow since we came back after the initial COVID lockdown, but that yeah, that tracks. There's talk about raising the minimum wage to $15 (I thought it was only for federal workers), and if you live somewhere like Iowa or Kansas, where the state minimum wage is $7.25/hr, that's a relatively large boost (an extra $7.75). If you live in Washington, though, the minimum wage currently is $13.69/hr, so raising it to $15 only gives you an extra $1.31, which is still not enough to live securely due to the cost-of-living in the state. It would also be less than what you'd make if you lived in Seattle ($16.69/hr). ...Look, I just want the minimum wage to be $1000/hr for everyone, so I can be live on my own and be independent and feel good about it since everyone else can do the same. Is that wrong? fun hater posted:cats. here are two korean cat owners who i follow on youtube who create funny videos: (remember to turn on captions) I've been watching both of these channels with family for around the last two years, and they are absolutely great. I think the best Mejoo videos are the ones that feature her dad, and his arc of not liking cats, to owning a cat, to caring for a stray cat near his workplace. - Claire has a couple of other channels: there's ClaireLuvcat (which also has English translations), and another channel that has streams and video game stuff (which does not have translations). I recall she had a couple others, but I think she might have deleted them at some point. The ClaireLuvcat channel came about in part because she signed some deal with a company under CreamHeroes, but then lost the rights of the channel (she got it back, though). Find someone who loves you as much as Claire loves her cats. - In addition to those two channels, I'd also suggest checking out SBS TV Animal Farm. It's from what I think is a newscast segment or TV program that has stories (sometimes multi-part) focusing on all sorts of animals with odd behaviors or unique circumstances. I will editing for them can sometimes be on the grating side with the sound effects, but more than that, some of the stories can get depressing, so be wary of that. - Finally, there's the best of them all: the one internet personality that put all others to shame, and can never be equaled. $15/hour, 40 hours a week is just $31,200 which is still pretty abysmal if you want to/have to live in a major city.

The federal minimum wage applies to all employees across the entire country. States are free to set their own minimum wages - even (most*) cities and districts are able to set minimum wages to whatever they want. Employers are obligated to pay the highest one. Is it less of a boost for Washington because they already had a less-predatory minimum wage? Sure. Does it prevent Washington from further raising their minimum wage? Absolutely not, and they should. *a number of states have passed legislation specifically revoking local government's authority to pass laws that supersede the state law regarding wages, contracts, and rights

States are free to set their own minimum wages - even (most*) cities and districts are able to set minimum wages to whatever they want. Employers are obligated to pay the highest one. Admittedly, I'm not super familiar with land value/rental prices/etc. elsewhere in the country, but what I was led to believe was that outside of Washington (or other states/areas with high costs of living) the cost-of-living was radically less despite there not being difference. For example, a two-story house in a suburban or rural area in somewhere like Idaho would cost considerably less than a house of the exact same kind in a similar region in Washington. I remember when I was working retail, there was thing where once you were employed for 90 days, you'd get a minor pay raise. Since I got hired towards the end of the year, what happened was that my pay went up above that raise amount once the new year rolled around. A month or so into the new year, we hired on some new people, and a co-worker pointed out to me that because of the minimum wage raise, the people who just started were making the same amount as those of us who had been there for 90 days. (I don't remember the exact details of it, it's been quite a few years now, and I try not to think about my time in retail). My point isn't to say that it's unfair that the new workers were making as much as the senior employees did despite just starting out, but rather (in keeping with the minimum wage adjustments), wage increases shouldn't be a set amount, but more proportional to what was offered previously. If raising the minimum wage in Iowa to $15 gives them an extra $7.75, then Washington's minimum wage should go from $13.69 to $21.44 (Ideally, all states should way more than that, but what I'm getting at it that the increase should be based on a percentage, rather than a fixed number.) This is sort of an aside, but for a time, I worked at a casino in Washington, but since it was on tribal land, they weren't required to pay state minimum wage; I think they were only required to pay the federal minimum wage (that said, I recall my pay being higher than federal minimum wage when I worked there, and they were one of two places that I worked at the gave out bonus checks, which, unsurprisingly, none of the big companies I've worked for have ever done.) josh04 posted:Inconsistency is when you demand a higher minimum wage in 2017 and a higher minimum wage in 2021, consistency is when you say "A $2000* check if our candidate wins." It's a $1400 check, because technically, $1400 + $600 = $2000! In reality, though, I imagine that once it goes through the House and the Senate, the amount is going to get bumped down, and once it gets approved, we'll somehow get $600 out of it, meaning it took the government three months to give up the same amount as the first stimulus, yet split across two payments. Terrible Opinions posted:Personally I've lived in the midwest and southwest my whole life and the raise to 15/hr would immediately mean most people I know could afford one of the smaller crappier houses and end up paying less than they currently are on apartment rent. Just due to the way loan requirements shake down. Not great, still room for improvement, but a massive increase in the standard of living. That what I mean: in those regions, a $15 minimum wage would make a big change (though still not satisfactory change, as you describe). Here in WA, though, it's like, "Yay, I get an extra fifty bucks every week. When I eventually have to exhaust most of the money I've made over the last seven-or-so years just to get a car that was made within the last five years, at least I know it'll only take me only six years to replace that money. Of course by then, I'll probably need to replace the car again, and then minimum wage in 2027 will be $15.30, but inflation will cause the price of other things to go up, so I'll --ah gently caress it " I guess something else to point out in all of this is being paid a salary, but the big pitfall of that (at least from what I've gleaned from a relative who works on salary) is that while on paper a salary gives you more than you would hourly, you can very well end up putting in more time than you would with hourly wages, but receive no overtime or double-time.
