Some little guys will make bank, lots of hedge funds will make bank, a handful of hedge funds will lose a lot of money, lots of little guys will lose a lot of money. Those that lose a lot will get a ton of press about it, those that make bank won't. Like if we we can get a financial transaction tax out of this that would be rad, but I doubt it. Ultimately this is the dumbest version of gambling I've seen and I really hope nobody I knows is involved.

Shimrra Jamaane posted:Yeah this is a good article on why this whole phenomenon isn’t exactly David vs Goliath. Yeah that's some good poo poo there, although it leaves some big questions unanswered, like: if Citadel (supposedly) stopped the worst frontrunning practices after it and RH paid fines, what is it currently doing with the order book, to make money? Is it really just bundling odd lots of share and option transactions into even chunks as a service to RH, or what? It's funny (not in an amusing but in an ugly way) that the main beneficiary of this week's action is probably going to turn out to be... Citadel, as they used Melvin's misfortune to take advantage of them and buy in with I assume a controlling stake. Meanwhile, when the memestonks inevitably peter out, the bagholders are going to be mostly the retailers who got in late or listened to the other retailers and HODLed their way back to or below their buy-ins.

Like, while I think the monetary incentives provided by Wallstreet for not properly addressing the COVID situation is a huge part of why we still aren't properly addressing it, I don't think we'd have got the vaccine any quicker if only fewer people were writing algorithms for Citadel.

Yeah human brainpower is not a universally fungible commodity that's for sure. I was just making a joke at spoeank about nerd tropes. But also it would be kinda great if engineering grads with $300k of loans were not facing choices of either a $200k job on wall street, A $150k job in silicon valley, a $50k job in the public sector, or a $22k a year (after a six month unpaid internship) to work for an NGO trying to get clean drinking water to people in third world countries like gambia or haiti or Flint, Michigan.

Anybody seen The Spanish Prisoner, Mamet film with Campbell Scott, Ricky Jay and Steve Martin. I just thought of it because the plot revolves around Campbell Scott and Ricky Jay having developed an algorithm for some Wall Street firm and then feeling like they're being screwed out of the profits from said algorithm.

Yeah, if you get a mathematics degree and have no soul, the world is your oyster (not like NASA's hiring!) Anyway, here's a thread about how much Hans Christian Anderson jerked his hog https://twitter.com/WhoresofYore/status/1290726187380158465 quote:Andersen may never have had sex, but he masturbated a lot, and whenever he did he recorded it in his diary with a ++. He was very frank in his diary about how much he masturbated and some entries just read “penis tender,” “penis hurts,” “penis sick,” “penis very bad.”
